View Full Version : Just a rant about pay!

I have just been offered some casual work. On the surface it sounds ideal, 5 min from home, walking distance and free childcare for 2 children if there happens to be vacancies in the centre on that day.
BUT (there's always a but) the pay is hideous!!!! I currently work part time, and the casual rates that this new centre is offering is $8 less an hour, and that is their casual rate of pay!!
I can't help but feel that this is NOT a good sign. I think that it shows a lack of respect for their staff that they are willing to pay such a low wage. I mean I am a uni trained teacher with over 10 years experience. I think it's insulting. I wonder what all the other poor staff are earning?
I know that they are offering me free childcare, but I just can't get past their attitude.
OK rant over.
Just out of curiosity, would you take up the offer?

Well.. Work out the sums.. How much would it cost to put your little one into care and are you actually getting a good deal (seeing as if they weren't offering for free, you would have to pay for it out of your wage).. Then work from there.

I know that if I do the maths, financially I would be better off in this new job, but I guess it's the principal of the whole thing. It just seems like they don't value their staff. Just not sure if I can work for someone like that, even though I would be financially better off (especially with the free childcare for 2!)

Maybe with the tightness of the economy at the moment this is like a barter type situation for them. It doesn't sound all that bad especially with the two children free care
situation.
There are alot of mums on here that have to pay most of their wage into childcare.
I got so sick of not being paid what i was worth (multimedia designer). it's not worth it. you'll end up resenting it and not spending that time with the kids.

Can I be nosy and ask what the hourly rate of pay is?? (I have just started casually at a bank, and am curious for the casual rates of pays in other areas).
I would say that the free childcare would probably compensate for the reduction in hourly rate...but you have to be happy working there...so you may be better off to stay where you are if you think you would feel more valued as an employee. You'd probably wind up resenting the other place, and that wouldn't be good.

ThisIsLiving, the going casual rate for an ECT is between $33-$35 an hour. I was being offered $22 an hour. What is the pay like working in a bank? The thought of a career change often crosses my mind.

Under $8 an hour for casual work? That is slave labour.

No they weren't offering $8 an hour. If I accepted the work I would be taking an $8 an hour pay cut.

Oh...sorry. I wish I was pregnant so I could blame that for my brain freeze.
