View Full Version : Lots of C-section questions
Hello,
We are thinking of having more kids.
However Ive had all my planned C-Sections in Europe so not sure of what goes on here in OZ.
Hope you dont mind answering questions.
1) Do they use staples or stitches here? ( stitches were wire with bead on end)
My previous C Sections it was not staples. So unsure what this is like.
How do they get staples out! ouch!
Previous scars healed great with stitches.
2) What is normal weeks for planned C-section delivery, Ive never gone further than 38wks due to complications.
3) For planned C Section is it best private or state hospital? Have to add, had complications with previous pregnancies. We have state hospital and SJOG in town.
4) Are husbands allowed in theatre for planned C-Sections here? Prob stupid question but want to make sure.
5) How long is usual stay in hospital after planned C-Section?
Any other input appreciated.
J
1) Do they use staples or stitches here?
I think it depends on the OB. Mine uses one continuous stitch which is removed on day 5. My last scar healed great.
2) What is normal weeks for planned C-section delivery, Ive never gone further than 38wks due to complications.
Again, I think it depends on OB, but I had a choice when to have mine. I'm having a planned c-sect tomorrow (breech baby) at 39 +2 days.
3) For planned C Section is it best private or state hospital? Can't answer this as have only ever gone private, but my guess is that they'd be pretty similar.
4) Are husbands allowed in theatre for planned C-Sections here? Yes, as long as you aren't having a general.
5) How long is usual stay in hospital after planned C-Section?
Depends on whether you stay private or public. Private is usually 5 days, while public is 4 days I think.

1) I was given a choice by my OB about staples or stitches (I chose stitches).
2) My c-section was at 37 weeks due to complications but they like to take you as close to full term as possible if there is no reason to go early.
3) I don't know what the rules are on elective c-sections in a public hospital. Mine was in private.
4) What chicken said - so long as you will be awake for the operation husbands are allowed in - although I know alot of hospitals don't allow them in the recovery room.
5) I had a 7 day hospital stay after my c-section. That was the standard for an afternoon c-section at my hospital (was 6 days for morning - just the way they worked it out if you had surgery in the afternoon it didn't count as your first day iykwim). I do know this is a longer stay than most hospitals.
I think everywhere is diff...
for me i had stitches and they removed them before i left hospital, they stay in 5 days ish...as did i in hospital they said i could go sooner but i didnt feel ready...
I had my c sect at 39 weeks due to a late discovery that bub was breech...
My DH was in theatre with me as they delivered bub...
I had my bub in a public hospital and it was fine...
HTH:)
1) Do they use staples or stitches here? ( stitches were wire with bead on end)
For DS1 I had one long continuous stitch; after this was removed I developed fluid under the wound, most likely due to the stitch passing through the wound. For DS2 I had soluble stitches, which I thought were great.
2) What is normal weeks for planned C-section delivery, Ive never gone further than 38wks due to complications.
Both my caesars were 10 days before due date, so 38 weeks 4 days. Many OBs only schedule operations on certain days of the week, so for me it was either that or 7 days later (which was too close for my comfort!)
3) For planned C Section is it best private or state hospital? Have to add, had complications with previous pregnancies. We have state hospital and SJOG in town.
Is that SJOG Murdoch in WA? I had DS1 there, it was lovely. Personally I would definitely go for private; after surgery I would hate to share a room, and friends in public have been moved along a good day or so earlier than everyone I've heard of in private.
4) Are husbands allowed in theatre for planned C-Sections here? Prob stupid question but want to make sure.
Yes, as long as you don't need a general. For DS1, DH was with me the entire time, and allowed to cuddle me while I had my epidural. However DS2 was born in a different hospital and DH wasn't allowed in until after my spinal was administered. After each birth I spent time in recovery, and bub went straight up to the ward to be cuddled by dad. Some people have bub in recovery with them but a) I was too unwell last time and b) We have decided to see the silver lining and view it as a beautiful time for bub and Dad to bond. DH really loves it.
5) How long is usual stay in hospital after planned C-Section?
I think 4-6 nights is pretty standard, at least in a private hospital. My first time I'm pretty sure I was in for 5 nights, but only 4 with my second.
Good luck! :goodvibes:
Thanks for the replies everyone.
Seams similar. Only thing different is in Europe hubby was allowed to stay with us in recovery.
J
My hubby was with me during recovery last time.

1) It depends on your ob. I had the dissolvable stitches and I think they are great. I healed so well and my scar looks neat and tidy.
2) I was told that generally obs dont like to perform electives any earlier than 38.5 weeks unless necessary. I was originally booked in for 38+6 but it was changed to 37+6.
3) I personally think private is better- you get to see your same dr the whole way through your pregnancy and you get to stay in a private room. My ob came and checked on both me and bub every day during our stay even on weekends.
4) my husband was there for some of the prep but wasn't allowed into the theatre room until I had the spinal block in. He stayed with me and bub the entire time, other than a few minutes when he and Layla went ahead to recovery before me. But it was literally only a few minutes.
5) I was admitted the wednesday night (operation on thurs morning at 7am) and stayed until the following wednesday. But that was only because we had BFing issues and Layla had lost a lot of weight and was very jaundiced.
Good luck!!

1) Do they use staples or stitches here? ( stitches were wire with bead on end)
Not sure what my OB used - dissovable stitches I think - and I've got a very neat scar from the c/s I've had
2) What is normal weeks for planned C-section delivery, My first was emergency, second one planned at 39 weeks
3) For planned C Section is it best private or state hospital? My Dad worked in health care for 20 years and reckons the best place is in a public teaching hospital - they have everything that opens and shuts. My experience at RPA was very positive both times, although my private OB delivered there both times so I had a bit of both worlds
4) Are husbands allowed in theatre for planned C-Sections here? Sure are. Mine was with me for both. Not during the spinal but in theatre and then in recovery with the planned (not the emergency - I was wrapped up like a roast chook after that one).
5) How long is usual stay in hospital after planned C-Section? Stayed five nights for the emergency, three nights for the planned.
Good luck

Mine wasn't planned but I had soluble stiches which were fantastic. My Hubby was allowed in with me and I was in the hospital 48 hours. I could have stayed longer but I wasn't getting the help/attention from the staff that I needed to I just went home, figured I might as well be in my own house if no one is going to help me!

My previous C Sections it was not staples. So unsure what this is like.
How do they get staples out! ouch!
Previous scars healed great with stitches.
I had disposable stitches so there was no taking staples or stitches out later. The staples don't hurt coming out though cos DH just got staples out without any pain at all.
2) What is normal weeks for planned C-section delivery, Ive never gone further than 38wks due to complications. I had an emergency c sect so I have no idea. It will depend on the complications and the OB/hospital
3) For planned C Section is it best private or state hospital? Have to add, had complications with previous pregnancies. We have state hospital and SJOG in town. No idea here....never had privat cover so never had to think about private hospitals.
4) Are husbands allowed in theatre for planned C-Sections here? Prob stupid question but want to make sure. As long as you have an epidural or spinal DH can be in with you. If its under general then no.
5) How long is usual stay in hospital after planned C-Section?Minimum stay of 3 days
Hi,
1) Do they use staples or stitches here?
It will depend on the surgeon but I'm sure you could request stitches. I had one long stitch and it healed beautifully. Staples are removed using a 'staple remover'. you hook it under the centre of the staple and kind of wiggle it out. It should be painless but can hurt a bit if there is a bit of scab stuck on the staple.
2) What is normal weeks for planned C-section delivery,
Again it will depend on the surgeon but from what I have seen usually 38-39 weeks. Xavier was done at 39w 4 days and this one will be about the same.
3) For planned C Section is it best private or state hospital?
This is going to be your own personal preference. I have chosen a private hospital as I want to know who is operating on me. Plus I didn't want a shared room etc like in public system.
4) Are husbands allowed in theatre for planned C-Sections here? For the most part yes. I have also seen husbands in the theatre during a GA. If it's a GA it is usually because there is a big urgency in getting the baby out quickly so no time for spinal etc and they may not let the husband in. But from what I've seen in these circumstances once the baby is out and OK they let the Dad in to see the baby. If it is an elective caesar I've seen Dad's in the theatre for the whole delivery during a GA. It will again depend on the surgeon and hospital. During a routine awake caesar Dad's are allowed in routinely. Most hospitals will only allow one person in with the patient but again, I've seen more.
5) How long is usual stay in hospital after planned C-Section? I think this varies between public and private. We stayed 6 days for Xavier. This is counted per calendar day. He was born at 1pm on a Wednesday and we were sent home at 10am on the sixth day (Monday).
Hope this helps you out. If you are considering going private then you need to book in with an OB who will then book you into your preferred hospital. I would suggest that you call as soon as you know your are pregnant as OB's and hosptals can book out quickly.
Good luck. Jo
1) Do they use staples or stitches here? ( stitches were wire with bead on end)
i had 2x self resolving stitching and 1x stitches which they removed after 1 week NO wireends here though
2) What is normal weeks for planned C-section delivery, Ive never gone further than 38wks due to complications.
for my one ele. c/s i was exactly 38 weeks
3) For planned C Section is it best private or state hospital?
i went public it was good .
4) Are husbands allowed in theatre for planned C-Sections here?
of course YES, i had my husband in for all 3 c/s and 2 of them were em c/s (when i was under GA both times)
5) How long is usual stay in hospital after planned C-Section?
depending on you and bub for my ele c/s i stayed 48 hours, but you could easily stay 4-5 days, whatever feels more comfortable to you, however you feel and however bub is doing
I think it depends on the hospitals policy regarding if your DH can go into recovery with you. I asked my ob yesterday if my DH could come in with me, he said yes - unless there were a few emergency c/sections at the same time and that made them short staffed.

1) It depends on the OB. My OB uses internal dissolvable stitches, so there were no stitches visible. Check when you have your first appt as to how they close up.
2) The standard is 39+ weeks. They will take a baby earlier if there are issues with the pregnancy/baby but due to the possibility of breathing issues prefer 39 weeks.
3) I had my 3 C/S in a private hospital, but it is a personal choice. IMO you do receive better care Privately but you do have to pay any gaps your insurance does not cover.
4) My husband was allowed in from the time I arrived at the theatres. He saw me receiving my Epidural as well as the rest. Was able to hold baby while being stitched up and hubby & baby stayed in recovery with me.
5) On average it is 3 - 5 days although you do have the option of going home after 48hrs (if no complications). If you decide to leave early, a middy comes to see you everyday to check you over and answer any questions you might have. I stayed in for 5 days as I wanted to make sure I had the hang of B/F.
1) Do they use staples or stitches here? ( stitches were wire with bead on end)
I had staples. A couple of them hurt when they came out (Day 5) but it was no big deal.
2) What is normal weeks for planned C-section delivery, Ive never gone further than 38wks due to complications.
My elective c/s was scheduled for 38+3, but my waters broke, so DS was born 38+1. He was fine - scored 8, then 9.
3) For planned C Section is it best private or state hospital?
I went private. It was good having the same ob throughout my pregnancy and having my own room.
4) Are husbands allowed in theatre for planned C-Sections here?
I was going to have an elective c/s with a spinal and DH could be there for that. Unfortunately, I ended up with a emergency c/s with a general and he couldn't be there.
5) How long is usual stay in hospital after planned C-Section?
My son was born on Tuesday morning and I went home Saturday lunchtime.

I have had 3 c-sections, 1 emergency and 2 elective.
1) Do they use staples or stitches here? ( stitches were wire with bead on end)
I have only had soluble stitches. Just dissolve in their own time
2) What is normal weeks for planned C-section delivery, Ive never gone further than 38wks due to complications.
My ob books elective c-sections for 39 weeks, but if you start to go into labour earlier, then he just did a c-section on that day (which happened with my son)
3) For planned C Section is it best private or state hospital?
I went private. I am sure there are perfectly lovely public hospitals somewhere in the country, but I wouldn't even go to the ones in my region for an xray if I could help it.
4) Are husbands allowed in theatre for planned C-Sections here?
My DH was with me the entire time I was in theatre. He held me while I was getting my spinal.
5) How long is usual stay in hospital after planned C-Section?
Private Hospital - nothing under 5 or 6 days usually (unless it is your choice of course). Public Hospital - who knows, I personally know of women who were made to discharge on Day 3.

You haev lots of fantastic info here but I can't resist - i love questionairres!!!!
1) Do they use staples or stitches here? ( stitches were wire with bead on end)
Depends on the ob. For my public emergency caeser I had dissolvable stitches which were great so I requested them for my private elective but he did staples. (naughty!!!) Which actually were really good. They did sting a bit to come out but you're probably jacked up on pain killers anyway so won't feel much.
2) What is normal weeks for planned C-section delivery, Ive never gone further than 38wks due to complications.
Again, depends on the ob. My ob went 38.5 but I knwo other obs do 38 weeks on the dot and I know hospitals over east make you wait til 39 weeks.
3) For planned C Section is it best private or state hospital?
personally, I would choose private primarily because elective caesers are more common and midwives can be a little prejudiced against mums who dont try for a normal birth.
4) Are husbands allowed in theatre for planned C-Sections here?
DH never left my side except when he got changed. I never went to recovery with either of my caesereans?? Actually, I think I may have with my elective but DH was there with me. The only time DH's have to leave is if you're under general anesthetic.
5) How long is usual stay in hospital after planned C-Section?
Public - I had my baby on the 23rd and the doctor said I could leave on the 26th (I had to stay 10 days as my daughter was prem)
Private - 5 days standard.

1) Do they use staples or stitches here? I had "internal" stiches - I think they are the same as dissolvable. They didn't need to be taken out at all. My sister had staples - so it just depends on your doctor.
2) What is normal weeks for planned C-section delivery. I had an elective for a breech baby at 39w. I was told they let you go as close to term as possible without going into labour. If you go early, they may schedule earlier.
3) For planned C Section is it best private or state hospital? The incident rates of c-sections are higher in private hospitals so you will probably get a "more experienced" doctor and care. Also in private you will probably be allowed to stay longer - even though they really don't "kick you out" at state.
4) Are husbands allowed in theatre for planned C-Sections here? Yup!
5) How long is usual stay in hospital after planned C-Section? I was in 5 days.
