Hi

We will be moving into a unit soon and want to know if its hard living in a unit with kids. My DD is 3 and my DS is 6 months. We havent found any where yet, we are still looking.

If we find something on the top floor, is it hard going up and down the stairs with the kids, shopping, etc or is it good exercise?

If the kids fall asleep in the car while on your way home, do you leave one sleeping in the car while you carry the other up a few flights of stairs or do you wake the older one up so he/she can walk?

Where do you hang out your towels and sheets to dry? Is there clotheslines? Are they safe? Or do you put everything in the dryer?

Is it cramped living in such a small space with toys everywhere? Or do you just get used to it?

Thats all I can think of for now
Thanks in advance
Natalie

I only have one child and I live on the ground floor so its much easier.

DS is almost 2 and I seriously cant wait till we move into a house (which should be by the end of the year!)

I hang washing out on my balcony (lucky we have a large one) but during winter everything goes in the dryer.

DH does the shopping so I dont have to struggle with a toddler and heaps of shopping bags:thumbsup:

Yes its cramped living in a 2 bedder with all the toys and stuff you need to store with kids around but you do get used to it.

I cant wait to have a garden and a big house:smiliedance:

:fingerscrossed: Good luck with finding a great place for your family!

Hi there

I live in a 2 bedroom flat on the third floor so have to trudge up and down many stairs each day. I only have one child who I have to carry up and down but its starting to wear on me as she gets bigger. Maybe you could try to find something on the ground floor or second floor, for the stairs do get tough especially if your trying to carry groceries up etc.

We do have a communal washing line, but I do tend to hang things on the balcony on a clothes horse, as I feel more comfortable having my things where I can see them. Don't really use the dryer much.

One bonus, the stairs are good for exercise, I managed to get back to my prepregancy weight within 5 months!

Oh and also its easy to keep an eye on your kids, when your in a smaller space.

 You sure do have a lot of questions.
DP an i were living in a unit when our son was born and it was ok but yes the stairs are annoying...not at first but you do get sick of them...i found it to be cramped once we had bubba and all the laundry was horrible in a unit cause we had no dryer so i was hanging things on a line on the balcony...
the clotheslines that were there i didnt trust cus i wasnt sure if they would get stolen and then u also have to make sure u bring them in each day
the other problem i found is your always looking into the other peoples house and they look in yours.
also there is not a private yard to go sit in or for ur children to play.
then the biggest thing that was the decider for us to move was during winter there was mould in the unit everywhere and im not sure if thats common but i wasnt staying in a mould infested unit  sorry if i sound particular but i wouldn't recomend it at all...but that may be because it was so cold and we couldnt really have any dorrs/windows open with a newborn so maybe that was my own fault but i havent heard of that happening in houses before...
now that ive given you all the negatives hopefully some one will have some positives :p

We live in an apartment, and we're about to find out the hard way. Only one bedroom, so no need to splash out on a baby monitor...

Elevators, though, which is a blessing. We too put all the non-dryer washing out on the balcony, on those folding drying racks.

We're going to have to move in a year or so, but until then... it'll certainly be interesting!

Living in a unit in general is hard. You've got to put up with the nosey neighbors; the communal laundry or the possibility of people using your machine without permission and breaking it (which has happened to ours); hanging your "unmentionables" out for the whole world to see on the communal line is always fun...

Then there's the fact that people come and go at all hours of the day/night; taxis coming constantly and blaring their horns; people smoking everywhere and if your windows are open you end up with the stink of it inside; people leave their junk mail all over the ground by the mailboxes instead of putting it in the bin they have to walk passed to get back to their units...

Another thing to consider is when random people in your block do renovations at odd hours of the night/day and hammer/drill/make a general racket when you or your baby are attempting to sleep. And you never know what losers are going to be living in your block (we had a murderer and a wife/children abuser living upstairs here when we first moved in).

We're on the ground floor and don't have children yet, so I can't comment on stairs or living with children, but the people upstairs have them and I would very much like to murder them all on several occasions. They run up and down the stairs, bang the inner-sliding doors, thump on the floor, drag chairs across the floor, jump on beds and all the other things that children generally do but the noise carries through to our unit and we can hear everything that they do. Every-single-smegging-sound-they-make...

We plan to move into a house soon and are currently TTC. I wouldn't recommend living in a unit with children, for your own sanity and the sanity of the hundreds of people you'll be sharing with...

Gee, can you tell I don't like living in units anymore?
