Hi there,

well, after weeks of indecision and homesickness since I found out I was pregnant we have decided to return to the UK.

All the things I thought i disliked I have been craving.
e.g. grey skies, rain, nice fruit (its **** here in Queensland), family, friends, central heating and long summer evenings, the NHS.

I have got 3 shipping quotes so far and they are all poles apart.

1st in was $7990 (Chess), 2nd was $9650(Kent) and the 3rd was $12031 (Allied) !! Go figure. Still waiting for Crown to quote. We came over with them. I'm amazed at the difference in quotes.

I know some people will think we are crazy. We are going to have to start all over again...financially etc. It will be hard esp. with a 6 yr old and a new baby due in Nov/Dec.

Don't any of you really dream of moving back?

We are not going until July. Feeling excited and scared cos of people's reactions etc when we get back. The usual "Oh so the dream did not come true eh?". You know the thing.

Hi there

Congratulations on your decision. I am sure it was one that was very difficult and not taken lightly. I bet you are very excited to see those green rolling hills....!

I get homesick too and miss the craziest things (like the grey skies, tho this week Sydney is having its fair share  ) but I don't have the urge to return as my life is here - I have a great network of friends and feel truely settled.

I am not sure of any international removalists but will ask a couple of mates if you like. Might be worth getting another quote seeing as there is such a difference in price.

I really hope you don't have comments from people - at least you tried the dream and realised it wasn't right and returned, which is a lot more gutsy than settling for second best in your lives.

Good luck

I'm green with envy ... Got room in your suitcase for me and the Bean? :D

I completely understand where you're coming from. Being pregnant has made me more homesick too ... I just want my friends and my sister and my mum.

*sigh*

Best of luck with the pregnancy and the move. :)

I think the buggest difference in price will depend on whether or not they will pack for you.

Congratulations Caroline, You are very brave to face up to how you are feeling and to do something about it. I used Chess (that is Chess hanley I think?) on the way here and they were very good.

I do get homesick, more for family and friends than anything else. We have decided that we will stay here for another year or two anyway and see how we feel then.

Congratulations again, your parents and family will be thrilled I am sure. I would not worry about the inevitable comments, after a few months that will be over too.

Good luck Caroline.

We're moving back to the UK early next year. It's been a difficult decision to make, and I love it here, but DH has been so unhappy here that I want to go back to allow our marriage to pick up again. It's been quite tough at times:gloomy:

Anyway, I just wanted to ask you to PM me too with those removal companies. When we came over we only had a few boxes, now we have a whole house load!

My family emmigrated here in 1967 from the UK, as my parents come from blue collar stock they worked their butts off here for 40 years trying to make a go of it but they never really managed to fit in to the Australian way of life. Even now they still wish they had returned to their home country long ago and as they are now in their later stages of life they secretely wish they were able to die in their home country.

I guess the same would occur for an Australian in England, does not matter where you are you really only ever call one place home.

Hi there Caroline

Am new to this site as moving to Perth next year (probably) and just read your post with interest.

Sorry to hear you feel homesick, but as others have said, you have to be true to what you feel and going back to the UK is not at all being defeated is it!!?? Contrary to what some people say, the UK aint that bad - but it can be stressful when you are here too (like the 15/20 mile tailback from Bournemouth beach just because the sun was out and everyone was going home. Lucky i was going the other way!!)

Anyway, i wish you tons and tons of luck and good fortune and I hope comments about the 'Dream' don't come too often.

We have suddenly got doubts about leaving our set up here esp as house prices in perth have priced us out of some areas and the ease o living seems to be disappearing in comparison. We have a nice house here, good salaries (but i HATE my job), good area, my mum and dad are near by, but time has meant friends have moved on and got less and we miss a social aspect. and as for a day at teh beach........hard work if the weathers nice!!

All the very best and if you have any tips about the 1st move to Australia - drop me a line with pearls of wisdom.

Thanks for that. its getting really hard now the leaving date is close, and my work in the UK is making life awkward for me with tons of prying. I am going to get such a hard time on my return. It makes me feel sick....literally.

Just make sure that your partner respects your roots too and understand that there will be times when you need to return to the UK.

:hugs: :hugs: :hugs: :hugs:

I can't believe anyone could love the UK over Queensland, but home is where the heart is!!! I was born in the UK (emigrated when I was 7), but live in London for 3 years a few years ago. Loved it at first, but the grey skies and dark, dingy atmosphere got too much for me in the end. I've been back in Brissy four years now, and I appreciate the blue skies every day!!! But I know what you mean about the fruit and veg. You'd think with our weather, we'd have great food? But I still long for M&S fruit and veg (even if it originated in Israel or Venezuala!). How long were you here Caroline? When my parents first moved here, my Mum cried pretty much for the first four years, but now she loves it. Her brother followed and emigrated in the early 1980s, then returned to the UK after about four years, then a few years later, returned back to OZ again. I wish you the best, because only you know where home is.

I have been here about 18 months now. I loved it to start with, but I found xmas very hard, and as soon as I got pregnant...well, that just sent me into a tailspin. My parents are old, and I suddenly felt that I had given up so much and the benefits did not outweigh the losses. Obviously none of this was new, other than the pregnancy, but my view on it changed dramatically once I was 11000 miles away.

I have loved it here for the most part. There are some oddities that I have struggled to deal with, and to be honest the culture is completely different....which i really did not anticipate. I may be a ping pong pom and be back soon. I don't know. I can't say with any certainty that this is the right decision.

Its been very hard for me, and I do not trust my judgment at all.:banghead: Only time will tell.

Thanks though to everyone for all the good wishes.:hugs: I suspect i am going to need them...God willing I am making the right decision.

You're doing what is right for now - that's all you really can do. Besides, Australia isn't likely to go anywhere ... well, not unless they really hack North Korea off, anyway :D
