I am suffering with what I have now found out to be pregnancy migraines. I am off to the GP this afternoon but was wondering if anyone else had these and what you did to ease the pain. I have a toddler to look after so sleeping is not an option. I go to sleep when he naps but am otherwise chasing him!

I am at my wits end and would be very grateful for any help.

TIA.

I have just seen the GP and all they can recommend is Panadiene Forte which is doing NOTHING for me. I really am desperate.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

:hugs::hugs:I remember all too well those migraines. There is no let up is there? Even when I woke in the night it would be there. I too was prescribed PF and it did nothing to stop it. My Ob said it was hormones but I think he just wanted to say it was something to make me feel better.
Sorry no miracle cure here, hope it eases up soon for you:goodvibes:

hey MooMum :hugs:

Sorry darling - i didnt get on yesterday to see your post. I hope you have had an ok night.

I have been a migraine sufferer for years though i have been fortunate (touch wood) not to have had too many while i have been pregnant but here are my suggestions:

I used to use (and still use if i have a migraine while pregnant) a homeopathic remedy called hormeel - i take the drops in my water all day every day plus if i have a full blown migraine i take extra drops that day. it might help alleviate the problem but also prevent future migraines from starting.

I also used some essential oils on my temples (peppermint and lavender) but know you cant use peppermint while pregnant so maybe burn lavender (hey it may have the added bonus of sleepying out your toddler!).

I also used to put an ice pack on my forehead or neck but also sometimes used to use a heat pack.

My suggestion would be to see an acupuncturist and also a naturopath. Often my migraines are related to my neck being out also, so i would see an osteopath (yes my medical bills are mounting up!).

In the leadup to me falling pregnant i did a lot of work with a fertility naturopath who helped me get my migraines under control (and who knew what i could then take when pregnant etc) - i went from taking prescription migraine tablets (with anti nausea tablets to combat the nausea the migraine tablets caused) at least 2-3 times per week to not taking anything (sometimes just lying down) in a matter of 1-2 months.

I thoroughly recommend you see someone cause we still have a while to go - and if the panadine forte isnt working then you must be going crazy..

PM me if you need anything else.

Love Flis xx

Hi Moomum,

I suffer with bad migraines normally but i too have had an increase whilst being pregnant. My sister suffered terribly with them, like you by the sounds of things. She ended up getting accupuncture, it worked a treat.. She highly recommended it, i was even contemplating going myself if mine get any worse.

I know with me that the light, sudden temp change and certain foods and of course hormones trigger mine. I walk around the house and inside with my sunnies on all the time. You should try this too, it does help prevent the light related ones...

Im thinking of you hun, they are just awful things to deal with.

Hugs to you

K

I just remembered something else - when i was in hosp with migraine a few years ago and was originally prescribed the anti nausea tablets he told me they may help with the migraine as well. So, since the anti nausea tablets are the same as the ones prescribed for nausea in pregnancy (cant remember the name), early on in my pregnancy (when my preg migraines were at their worst) i would take one of those anti nausea tablets to help releive the symptoms and i am pretty sure it worked.

worth checking with your GP.

Moo,

I have been a suffered from migrains and headaches for many years now. During the frist 3 months of my preg I was getting them quite bad, when I told my OB he just told me there was nothing they could do and to just take panadol. I found that this didn't really work that well. A few friends suggested that I go and see a chiropractor. So I did.
Since seening her I have only had 2 headaches in about 5 or 6 weeks and NO migrains. I also found that I am sleeping better as well.

Hope this helps and yours start to get better soon.
Lots of :hugs::hugs:and :fingerscrossed: for you.

I was prescribed these too for migraines, but was prescribed maxalon.
Moo, have you tried one of those migra-stick things they sell at the chemist? Not sure if they work/safe in pregnancy but might help?

Ooh, and I just googled as I loved to do and came up with this..

Here's a treatment that I have found works even though it may sound funny.
Place an ice pack at the back of your neck for ten minutes at a time. Do this several times a day. Massage toothpaste (yes, toothpaste) on your temples and lay quietly in a cool room With the ice pack on the back of your neck . This will often take away the pain.

Oh and i take back my 'try caffeine' comment from the other thread, apparently it makes them worse.. :detective:...oh well, works for spinal tap patients.
And now I've just read that some people swear by caffeine and a cigarette...

Also am reading that magnesium is good for migraines, as are B vitamins, omega 3.

hi moo
i too suffered in both my pregnancies and before and after too!
and the only thing that worked for me was maxalon, which others have mentioned and I would highly recommend you getting a script from your doctor, it is completely safe in pregnancy. good luck.

ps. I have also used the chiropractor with great results too

Hello to all you lovely ladies,

I cannot thank you enough for all your replies, it really does warm my heart.:hugs:

I have tried maxolon and unfortunately it does not agree with me. However I now have quite a few other options to try and I'm starting at the top of the list and working my way down!!!

Thank you again so very much. You are such a caring bunch and I'd be lost without my bubhub family!

Oh bugger, cause i just found this...
Due to its action on the gut, metoclopramide also has several other uses. It is useful in migraine, not only for relieving nausea, but also because during a migraine attack stomach emptying is slowed, which can prevent painkillers from being absorbed. Metoclopramide speeds up the passage of painkillers from the stomach to the intestine, from where they are absorbed to relieve the headache.

Maybe Zofran would do something similar?
Oh maybe a brain transplant... :p;)

I had severe headaches during my 2nd pregnancy and the only pain relief that worked for me was mersyndol (as recommended by my OB). Paracetamol did nothing for it, and I also had an active toddler to contend with so rest wasn't really an option (she was 18mths-2yrs at the time).

I did try meditation, relaxation and guided imagery but it only worked for more minor headaches, only medication helped with the severe migraine type ones.

Good luck.

Oh maybe a brain transplant... :p;)

I have considered this!!! Mine is clearly defective in more ways than one!! Thank you for your googling Sister Nic!!:hugs:

Zenifa - I take the Mersyndol at night with the hope that they knock me out! Thank you. I don't think I'd be able to concentrate on relaxing when my head is about to explode either, but I will try it when they are not so severe. :hugs:

If you ARE able to find a good surgeon who is willing to do a transplant for you, put my name down too. I'm looking for a sharper brain, I'd like to be able to speak some new languages without having to learn them, and maybe some awesome cooking skills too.....

I completely sympathise with you as I too have been having migraines in this pregnancy.
I was prescribed PF as well although MOST of the time they DID help clear it up to at least a dull headache which was more bearable.
The trick for me was as SOON as I had an inkling of a headache I got onto some panadol rapid. If I felt it continue the next step would be 1 x PF tablet and still then if it continued, I'd take 1 more. (I was more worried about the side effects of PF as I suffered terrible constipation in my first trimester and did NOT want to go there again).

Have you thought about trying one of those rolley sticks that you rub on your temples and back of the neck? I got one from a chemist out of desperation and it wasn't too bad - great for dabbing on when you go to bed especially.

Hope you find a solution that works for you -it's such a debilitating condition to have :hugs:

ive been getting migraines since i was 10. ive been hospitalised with them because some are so severe. my type of migraine is not a bad headache like most seem to think a migraine is which annoys the beejeezus outta me. i go blind, start vomiting accompanied by pain that requires frozen peas stuck to my head! the only thing that works for me is pitch black room or eye mask, no noise or ear plugs, a cool temperature...aircon if i have it. i am not able to function at all! the only medication i can take is a nasal spray called IMIGRAN cos i cant take tablets cos i just vomit them back up nomatter how quickly i try to take them when my eyesight goes. imigran is on a government script which just means your gp has to ring up to get permission to give it to you. cant wait for a cure.

I was fortunate in that I only had a couple, but after the second one, I went to see a chiropractor. It helped so much, and I've continued to see her monthly and haven't had another one.

Girls I just wanted to mention - migrastick and some of the other essential oil style sticks contain peppermint oil, which I understand as an essential oil may cause miscarriage so please use with caution or avoid. I used to use migrastick religously before I was pregnant but have avoided during pregnancy just in case.

Morning to all the lovely ladies offering help!

After an awful day yesterday I tried rapid soluble Panadiene. RELIEF!!! Amazing! It hasn't taken the migraine away completely but has given me more relief than anything so far including Panadiene Forte! I am still going to go and see a chiropractor and maybe a naturopath, but I cannot tell you how much better I feel, I feel almost human again!!

We are off to see Coldplay tonight and I was going with or without a thumping head, I've just been looking forward to them for so long. I can't tell you how overdue we are for a grown-ups night out! So bless soluble panadiene!!

Thank you all again for your help, I can't tell you how much it was appreciated in a desperate time of need. As I said I will coninue trying other things.
