Do you have a shy child? My 5 year old is, she has a great personality with us and if she knows you well. She's funny and balshy. She has real trouble speaking to adults and when kids from the street drop in or stop at the fence to say hi, she says nothing, she gets an attack of the 'shy's'. I know its probably just her personality but its a shame and I feel a bit sorry for her because some kids find it so easy to be friendly.
 my 5yo is extreemly shy. She hates unknown people, unknown situations and crowds. So much so she'll have a screaming/crying/grab hold of mum, hissy fit.
She started gymnastics a couple of weeks ago as I'm trying to put her inot situations where she has to cope alone. It went:
Trial day: tears, no joining in
Day 1: tears, clinging to mum for the first 10 mintues, wouldn't leave my side for the next 5, joined in while I was in eyesite, forgot about me at the 20 min mark.
Day 2: Bye mum
The dramas drive me insane. I've tried forcing her to do things, but have found I just have to let her get comfortable with a situation before she'll let go of me.
Yes, she too won't say hi to our neighbour if the neighbour makes the initial hello. Yet sometimes when DD1 has something to tell the neightbour there's no holding back.
I'm hoping she'll grow out of it soon.
