Hi, we recently found out that my husband has obstructive azoospermia, which is zero sperm count caused by a blockage in one of his tubes.
The urologist said that surgery to fix blockages is not very successful and IVF is our only option.
From what I have read, I think microsurgery has alright chances of success, depending on where the blockage is. If it doesn't work then IVF is still an option. There are tests (ultrasound etc) to find out where the blockage is but the urologist didn't even mention this option. He said that we need IVF with ICSI. I asked him about surgery twice and he didn't even consider it.
I talked to my traditional chinese medical practitioner about it. She does a lot of IVF complementary work. She said she thinks not many doctors do this type of surgery anymore, since IVF has come so far.
I really feel that we were not given the option of surgery to fix my husband. We were simply told that we would have to try IVF. We were told about the option of using donor sperm (before we knew that the zero count was due to a blockage), but we weren't told anything about surgery!
We want to have a natural pregnancy if possible, and my husband is okay about having surgery (which is pretty great really).
Has anyone looked into surgery to fix a blockage? Can you tell me anything about it, like what sort of tests you had, who you heard does this surgery, any urologists who might be good to go to about this option??
Thank you for any help. If anyone else out there is interested let me know and I will keep you updated with what I find out.
xxo
