Would love to meet some other mum-to-be's or new mums in Cairns. I'm due beginning September and a friend of mine had her bub about 9 weeks ago, and need some mums to talk to (in person :) ) We're both going to be stay at home mums so hoping to find some mums so we can stay sane.

I should be so lucky!!! ((she says as she sits with a scarf around her neck, two tops on and the central heating humming away in the background))
 Hi anyway from freezing cold Melbourne!:(

Hi there, I'm 24 and expecting my first bub on 1 September. I've just finished up work so got lots of time of my hands now!! Where in Cairns are you? I see you're getting married in August, congrats for that! I was married 20 August last year. Great time of year.

HI jodi, I bet your excited that its getting closer to when bub arrives. I am in woree. We own a townhouse here. Where abouts are you?

August is a great time to get married i think.... not to hot or cold and hopefully not rain. The 20th is our 5yr anniversary but is a sunday so we had to put the wedding back a week to the 26th. Was a same cause i would have loved to get married on the same day we got together, but oh well at least we are getting married.

Which school did you go to?

jodi

I went to Trinity Bay but only in year 12 in 2000, originally from Sunshine Coast. We have a house in Mount Sheridan. Definitely counting down now as bub is due, 13 weeks just doesn't seem like that far.

YAYY, some Cairns people!!!

I've been dying to see someone else from Cairns. I'm in Mount Sheridan also - I'm actually just about to go walking, so if you see a lady walking past your house in the next half an hour, call out BUB HUB and I'll know it's you! hahaha

Yay ... 2 people in Cairns both on the southside, what are the chances of that!!
I only came across this website the other day after a friend mentioned we need friends with kids :)
You are so good to be going walking, I really need to start walking a little more so I don't get too fat while I'm pregnant. I've got 2 dogs that demand walks each day but that still doesn't encourage me out the door! but I did manage to walk up and down Cairns Central this morning shopping

I'm afraid I only went for a walk this morning because I was feeling so guilty about the half block of chocolate I ate last night!!! (and I'm talking about a family block here! :o )

But I'm always looking for a walking buddy, if you're interested! And I really need the inspiration, it's just so unappealing going alone! My little Toby (maltese terrier) would LOVE some other puppies to walk with, too.:D

Hey, maybe we could get together a Bub Hub Social Walking thing, now that'd be cool! :D

Cool, I have a Toby too!! He's an 8 month old Border Collie, loves people and other dogs!

That sounds like a great thing, anything to get me motivated.
Where in Mount Sheridan are you? I'm Laurel Avenue (off Hardy Road)

I'm in Boonaree Close (off Verbeena Drive, which is off Hardy Rd) - so I'm just up the road!! I know a few people in Laurel Ave - Felicity (she has twins), Serena, and Virginia.

We're actually moving in the next couple weeks, but hopefully still around this area. So we're gonna be pretty busy, but after that, I'd love to go walking! (I'll try and send my email address to you via PM).

Wow, I can't believe you have a Toby too!! Do you have any kids, or will this one be your first?

03-06-2006, 16:53
This is our first bub. I don't know anyone around here. We moved from Earlville last year and we've been so busy with getting married last year, but now I'm not working I've got lots of time on my hands before bub is due.

Did you finish in 2000? My maiden name is Searle, what's your surname? I have no idea where my year book is ... I'll look for it tomorrow.
I know what you mean about people our age having no kids!! All my girlfriends which I've known since being in Cairns don't have kids, and it's starting to get a little awkward when I see them cause they're doing their own thing and we're doing our own thing.

Desertress
05-06-2006, 07:12
Yes i finished in 2000 as well
Last name is Barnes.
I pretty much dont have any friends from school as they are still interested in partying and clubbing and all of that and im onver it as i have the kids. I dont see anyone anymore because noone bother to keep in contact but yet they still make time for each other..... sad but oh well such is life.

Who were you friends with at school. Might help me remember who you are?

Hi! I'm in Cairns too. But am not on the southside. I'm living in Park Ridge and have just moved here from Melbourne. I'm originally from Cairns but lived in Melb for about five years.

I should have checked here first as I'd just started a thread in the Playgroups section asking if anyone knew of any good playgroups or mothers groups!!

I have a 9 month old son and we're hoping to make some new friends as I've lost touch with all my old friends. Do you girls get out much? I'd love to meet for coffee if you're interested. Currently I am a stay at home mum and am absolutely loving it but a part of me is also looking forward to going back to work - if I can find work up here!!

Hi Pricilla, Seems that we are gathering quite a group of us on here now which is good to see.

Im also looking to make some new friends because after having kids i didnt quite fit in with all my old friends anymore.

I also have a 9 month old son and a 3 yr old son. I dont go to any playgroups as i have tried 2 and they both werent what was looking for.

I am a SAHM atm to but will probably start looking for work in the next 6 months if DF has his way otherwise it will be a bit longer.

Anyhow look forward to chatting with you again.

Priscilla
10-06-2006, 19:54
Hi Kristen,

Yes it is a little difficult to continue meeting up with old friends who don't have kids yet. I'd love to meet up one day for coffee or for lunch if you have time?

How come you didn't like the playgroups you went to? Was it the setup or more the people? What are you looking for in a playgroup? I have been thinking about joining one of the playgroups from Playgroups Australia..... hence all the questions about your playgroup experience. I'm not THAT much of a nosy parker by nature :P

You mentioned the possibility of going back to work in the next 6 months, what do you do? Or what did you do (if you had resigned before giving birth)?

I actually MIGHT be heading out to Cairns Central on Tuesday morning. If you're not busy on Tuesday morning, are you interested in meeting for brunch? I won't find out if I will or won't be going until Monday so I'll let you know by then.

Jodi and Mandy, it would be great if you two could come along too!

Hi everyone, I only just looked back on this thread and realised there were more replies since I last posted. I have a proposition.....let's organise a little morning tea get-together! My 2.5yo DD and I absolutely LOVE going out for coffee, so if anyone wants to make plans, I'm keen! We really love the cafe in Cairns Central, I think it's called Cairns Corner Cafe or something, and they're quite baby and child friendly. Just a thought. Look forward to hearing from anyone! Feel free to PM me, too. :)

Hi Mandy,

That sounds great! I hope I don't sound too desperate for new friends, but it would be lovely to meet some other mums.

Cairns Corner Cafe, that's the one upstairs just outside Myer, isn't it? Yes I quite like that place too. Nice and roomy for prams and strollers, and not too noisy. It doesn't have to be Tuesday that we meet. I just assumed everyone would have made plans with the family on the Queen's Birthday holiday on Monday.

Basically anytime/day is good for me as my car has just arrived from Melbourne so I no longer have to co-ordinate the car sharing with my mother!

What days/times does everyone prefer?

Hi Priscilla - no of course you don't sound desperate, it's always great to meet other mums with kids - and having only been in Cairns for about 15 months, I'm still really keen to meet more people!! Yep, that's the one outside Myer upstairs. And the kids get free babyccino's too :) Well how about we make a plan to meet, and then if anyone else is keen they can join us? Tuesday morning's good for me, I take my daughter to school at 9am so could meet you there anytime from about 9.30am? And it's generally still nice and quiet at that time, too. But later is fine. Let me know, anyway! - Mandy

Hey, I would also love to meet up but tuesday isnt good as i go to get my legs waxed at 9 (tmi  ) first time so i'll see how i go and then i have an appointment at the florist to pick my wedding flowers at 10 and then i have a dentist appointment at 2.

Normally anyday is pretty good for me. Wednesday is normally the best as my 3 yr old is at daycare. He is quite a handful atm so its easier not to try and tatke him out.

Let me know when you ladies decide when to meet up and i'll try and make it as i would love to make some new friends.

No, I don't think Cairns Corner Cafe has any playground?? I'm not even sure I know which one that could be - but if you do have any suggestions of somewhere to meet, maybe somewhere that does have a playground for your little one? I'm easy. (well, not REALLY! ;))

Priscilla

Hi all,

Yep Friday is good for me. How about 10am? And I'll try to not be late :P

To clarify, there are two cafes outside Myer - one upstairs and one downstairs. The one upstairs is called Cairns Corner Cafe and this does not have a playground. The one downstairs is Coast Roast and this has a playground outside (it has an entrance from inside the centre and an entrance from McLeod St).

How about we meet at Coast Roast at 10-ish on Friday?

There are some seats at the entrance of Coast Roast (in front of the downstairs entrance to Myer) so maybe we should meet there for everyone? I have a Valco Titan stroller but it's got a brown cover on it with bunnies, letters and soccer balls - you know it when you see it!

:fingerscrossed: Hopefully this is ok with everyone???

OK that sounds great. I will be there... look forward to meeting you all. But please dont mind me as i am a little shy... so im really not *****y :p BUt hopefully i wont be the only one :fingerscrossed:

I will see you all on friday at around 10 then :smiliedance:

Sounds excellent! What I might do, if you all don't mind, is post a new thread to confirm our little meet, so that anyone who had been on this thread earlier will see it clearly - just so it hasn't gotten 'lost' at the end of the thread! :)

Desertress
14-06-2006, 08:21
I was just thinking.... should we try and post a pic of ourselves so that we have rough idea of who we are looking for.... other wise we might walk up to some random person with a pram and start chatting thinking its one of us lol.

HELLO :yelclap:
Nice to see some more Cairnsites. Desertress I have been wondering what happened to you. Glad to see you are back, thats if you were ever gone.

Just wanted to say hello and let you know if any of you are interested we have a mothers group that gets together every Monday morning at someones house or a child friendly place like Muddies etc.

We have dwindled in numbers due to people leaving town going back to work etc so would love to meet some new mums. We are a friendly bunch of 4:laughing: and have 4x toddlers 2x 1yr olds and 1x new born and 1x on the way.

Most of our get togethers are out at Edmonton or Bayview Heights so pm me if you are interested.

We still really call it Mothers group cause the kids run of and play and we natter:laughing: Its our sanity time to talk to adults.

Otherwise I would love to chat on here even if your not interested.

Hi Kirsten,

If you've not got any plans tomorrow morning, you should come along too. We'd love to meet you!

I'm interested in your little mothers group but I go to pramercise on Monday mornings. Are there any other times during the week you get together or is it really just Monday mornings?

Hi Pris

I would love to come and join you tomorrow but dd has swimming lessons at 9.30am out at Edmonton.

If you don't mind me being a little late I will come and join you but it would probably be about 10.30am.

How will I know who you all are?

10:30 will be fine.....

Just come into Coast Roast, at this stage I can't say whether we'll be sitting inside or outside but look for a brown stroller with bunnies, letters and soccer balls on it. Trust me, you'll know when you see it.

Mandy also put a post up in the Playgroups section (I've just found it myself) and in there are links which both Mandy and Kristen to show their photos.

I'll try to park my stroller somewhere obvious to the eye so you wont miss us.

I'm very sorry too to hear the awful news....

But if you managed to get a funny story out of it ( ) then I'd love to hear it!!

We all had a lovely time on Friday morning - well, I did anyway!! Just before we left, we briefly mentioned catching up again soon. Mandy has friends coming up from down south on Thursday, so how about we get together again before that?

I'm good anytime other than Tuesday morning. How's everyone else's schedule??

Priscilla, I'm with you, I thought it was a wonderful morning and would love to do it again! There's a possibility I might have some work on over the next few days, but I won't really know until probably tomorrow morning. So I might pop in here tomorrow and see whats happening, anyway.

Kirsten, look forward to meeting you and hearing your stories!

Until then, take care!

Greetings Cairns ladies,
Priscilla and Desertress have already "talked" to me so I thought I would drop into this thread and introduce myself. I am new to not just Cairns but Australia too. I emigrated here 7 weeks ago with my aussie husband and 2 kids (aged 14mths and 9 years) from England. We are living out at Redlynch and I am liking the area and Aussie life very much. I just need to make some Aussie mates now!:smiliedance: I only found your thread friday afternoon so missed out on meeting you all at Cairns central.
I have just read that you are all busy this week and it looks like you you won't be meeting up:( but I hope to meet you all next week maybe. I shall keep dropping in here to find out what the plans are and in the meantime if any of you want to know more about me then feel free!
 Bye for now x

But if you managed to get a funny story out of it ( ) then I'd love to hear it!!

Oops I didn't mean funny story out of our bad news - mustn't have you thinking I am weird:laughing:

I just didn't want you all to think I would be morbid and depressing when you met me.

Will keep an eye out for your next meet though.

Hi
I'm so glad there are other mums like me out there!!!! LOL I'm in Manunda (I wish it were Mt Sheridan LOL) and I'm finding it hard to get motivated to lose the weight I've put on from being a new mum (was so sick pregnant I actually lost weight but could barely move after emergency caesar so put a heap on LOL). I have 4 (nearly 5) month old son Cameron and am SAHM. Would love to chat to some other local mums (besides my own mum LOL).

My little boy's name is Cameron too! HA! I'm in Park Ridge so not too far from you.

Hi to all the new girls in Cairns.
I've had a pretty bad week this week, I was going to go in and help out at work but my morning sickness came back with bang and I've just been lazing around the house not wanting to do anything. Last night was the worst I've been in months. Bring on this baby, only 10 weeks to go!!

Hopefully we can meet up again next week, and fingers crossed I won't be throwing up :fingerscrossed:
At this stage I don't have any plans for next week. Being a housewife, my schedule is normally pretty clear ;)

Talk to you all soon

Hi everyone
Thanks for the welcome! I was a bit nervous about joining up so thanks! :hugs:
I was married in January, we had planned for September but when Cammy came along it was pushed forward (planned in about 4 1/2 months!) and we only just scraped it in (he was born 2 1/2 weeks later 10 weeks early). So looks like us Cairnsites (?) like August/September for weddings LOL. If you need any help Desertress let me know
Talk to you all when you come back online... I'll just wander around the forums on my own :crying: LOL

jodi
21-06-2006, 08:59
LOL Lauren I was married August last year :smiliedance: You did well to organise it in only 4 1/2 months, mine took just over 12 months to organise. You're so lucky your son was born after the wedding!!

Desertress
21-06-2006, 10:50
Lauren - Thank you for the offer but i have every thing pretty much under control for now... except my MIL lol.

Which school did you go to as you are the same age as my DF.

You were very lucky that you pushed the wedding forward then and you did really well to organise it in the amount of time.

newmum2one
22-06-2006, 08:40
Actually I left nearly all the planning to mum as we were married in Atherton and I was so sick so was very hard to do anything. I just told my MIL to turn up (so she couldn't put her 2c in LOL).
I went to school in Atherton so doubtful I went to school with your DF, but you never know, it seems a lot of people I went to school with are living in Cairns now.
If there was one thing I could change about the wedding it would be for me to have organised more of it, I ended up a little disappointed with a few things but thems the breaks, the main thing is that it happened :smiliedance:
Main disaster is that my veil ripped from one end to the other and mum had to make a 1/2 dash both ways an hour and a half before the ceremony to get me another one on loan! LOL Oh and the entire bridal procession and guests were RBT'd on the way to the reception LOL I was mortified!!!!!

Desertress
22-06-2006, 11:13
Sounds like you had quite the interesting wedding day. My main problem will be with mil and on of fil sisters if she comes. Plus my parents and kevins parents dont get along very well.

DF went to school down here so i dont think you would know each other. Most of his family live up in atherton tho. His aunty is Irene Costa... she does wedding and deb ball dresses

Hi everyone!!!

HOpe you all've had a great week! Since no one's started any discussion on getting togther next week, I thought I'd be the instigator..... what's everyone's plans/schedules like for next week?

Tuesday mornings aren't good for me, and neither is Wednesday lunch. At this stage, I'm good for any other day.

On another different topic altogether, have you ever subscribed to a thread, but not have it show in your User Control Panel whenever there has been a new post on that thread? This has happened to me a few times now and it's starting to bug me!

Any day next week is good for me. I've only got plans next weekend, but nothing during the week.

Priscilla, how much is pramercise on Monday *confused*, I thought it was free, then saw your post about $7.00? Is that for additional classes?

Priscilla
24-06-2006, 11:05
Jodi - so very glad to hear your morning sickness is settling down a bit.... I wasn't looking forward to the possibility of wearing your spew!!

Lauren - pramercise is free only on Mondays as its sponsored by the council. On every other day it costs $7. Hope that makes sense? Sorry didn't mean to confuse you!!

Hi girls!! As much as I'm dying to catch up with you all, I don't think I'm going to be able to do it in the next week or two....I'm currently in the process of packing boxes for our move on Friday, and then next week I'll be cleaning the old house  In normal circumstances I'd be right, but with awful morning sickness :barf: at the moment, I'm going really slowly and taking MANY rests in between jobs. (Some may call it procrastination, I just call it 'taking rests' )

Anyway, hope you're all well, and can't wait to see you again real soon!

Hello fellow Cairns mums!
Just to let you know you can count me in for meeting up this week/next week. I can do any day really, except the weekend as I have good friend over from England and am going to show them all the great things to do around here!:smiliedance:
Hope you're all going okay and hope to meet you soon!

jodi
27-06-2006, 13:06
Mandy: hope your morning sickness eases up soon, I know the feeling, it sucks. Good luck with the move and talk to you once you've settled in.

Rockmamma: great that you can come along. I don't think anything has been planned yet, but I'm sure we'll organise something soon :)

27-06-2006, 16:37
Hi all! I was beginning to think that everyone's turned their noses up at this thread!!! :o

OK, well we have three of us now.... Kirsten what are your plans?

I originally couldn't do Wednesday but now my plans have changed slightly. What I had planned for Wednesday has now moved to Thursday .... so can't do Thursday but CAN do Wednesday.

So, how are we for Wednesday? I know it may be short noticed since that's tomorrow..... otherwise Friday? Say 10am? At Coast Roast like last time?

Mandy - how awful for you, you poor thing! I hope the morning sickness settles down for you very soon.... We'll just catch up with you next time.

Now you're all teasing me LOL :p
I will be thinking of you all at 10am - as I told Priscilla, I have a teenager staying with me who is so worried I'll embarrass her (would I do that?? probably) so count me definitely in for next week (or next time LOL)

28-06-2006, 09:15
Sorry, I have to cancel as well. I had an awful sleep last night, only got about 3 hours, and feeling a little nauseus. I won't be able to catch up next week as I need to work Monday through to Thursday
Hope to catch up again soon though.

OMG I'm so embarrassed!!!!

I got myself and DS ready to go to pramercise in under an hour (first time ever we've been completely ready before 10am! Usually leave house without doing hair, or eating breakfast as we leave etc  ) and after missing a turn (I'm not the world's best traffic driver - I *never* drive further into the CBD than Cairns Central) parked at the Pier at 9.29am. No prams in sight at the tree.

So I headed off on my own - I always enjoy walking so wasn't a problem... Except that I nearly got run over twice when a herd (LOL) of mums with prams came up behind me on the way back ... I think Priscilla (olive outfit red cap?) passed me twice ... I hope you all waved  as I passed you all again though... When you were all doing the push up things on the seats a redhead with a navy/purple stroller walked right in front of you all, blushing furiously!! That was me! I was mortified because the trainer had previously thought I was part of the group and lagging behind, then I had to parade past all you yummy mummies to keep going towards the car... THEN you all passed me again ROFL

I really am looking forward to meeting you all, but will have to be when I stop being red with embarrassment... I'm not exactly sure why I'm embarrassed, I just am LOL.

Is anyone up for coffee this week?? I am - anyday.

Desertress
03-07-2006, 13:09
Hi Lauren - sounds like you had quite the interesting morning. I dont think i have the motivation to go to pramsercise lol.

I would like to catch up this week,.... my best day is wednesday as my 3 yrold terror is in day care but i can do any other day except tomorrow.

jodi
04-07-2006, 07:27
Lauren good to hear that you actually went for a walk while you were there! I probably would have just turned around and went for a coffee instead lol

I'm working today and tomorrow, & I've got a couple of things on Thursday morning, but free other than that (which doesn't really much time does it  )
If I can't catch up with you girls this week, then I'll catch up another time.
I'm off to work so have a lovely day ladies, talk soon

Anytime's good for me. Don't you just hate when everyone says anytime is good as the next problematic question is: When and where?!?!?!?

So then, when and where??

How is Friday morning for everyone? Don't ask me for a place though LOL

jodi
05-07-2006, 10:52
I'm good for Friday morning. Do we want to meet at Coast Roast cafe at Central again? Or maybe the coffee place at the Pier, that's nice as well?

Desertress
05-07-2006, 12:00
I havnt ever been to the one at the peir. Is that a very kid friendly one.??

jodi
05-07-2006, 17:00
It's at the front of the Pier and you sit on the deck. Very popular with parents. Hubby & I go there often and always see other parents with their kids.
This one and the one at Central are the only one's I go to, so don't know about any others.

Priscilla
05-07-2006, 17:04
Friday is good for me too. Coffee Bean (the one at The Pier) is not really kid friendly in that there is no playground. I really can't think of any which have playgrounds....... You'd think they'd have more cafes with play areas for kiddies, huh?!

Any place is good for me, really. Kirsten, does Logan like colouring in? I know Jamaica Blue (outside Target in Cairns Central) has a colouring book and pencils combo as part of their kids menu. Or we can just try Coffee Bean (at The Pier) since you've never been there. What do you think?

How's everyone for meeting at 10:30?

Desertress
05-07-2006, 20:27
I guess i can just bring a colour book or something for him anyway and hope that makes a little difference for him... lol I guess maybe the peir would be a little quieter so it sounds good.

Desertress
06-07-2006, 15:47
Im not to sure if i should come tomorrow as i have a cold and i would hate to give it to any of you ladies or your bubbas. Do you think i should wait till its gone adn catch up with you then?

Priscilla
06-07-2006, 18:34
How bad is your cold Kristen? If it's just a small case of the sniffles, I personally don't see a problem with that.

I having second thoughts about coming tomorrow too because Cameron is teething and is in a lot of pain. I really want to come to catch and to meet Lauren though. What I might do actually is come for about an hour. i pretty much have C hanging off my boob 24/7.

btw Lauren, that was me in the olive green outfit & red cap on Monday!

jodi
07-07-2006, 07:29
I won't be able to make it as I've come down with the flu pretty bad, and my morning sickness just doesn't want to go away.
Hope to catch up soon though

07-07-2006, 07:32

07-07-2006, 07:36
I've just reread the posts and I have no idea if/when/where we're actually meeting this morning :(
I'll leave the computer on for a little while so if someone could just confirm whether it's Jamaica Blue at CC or Coffee Bean at Pier at 10.30 that would be great
I'm so looking forward to getting out of this house and having some 2 sided adult conversation! (LOL DS just smiles at me when I talk to him and his talking doesn't make sense, and DH is just as bad sometimes ROFL  )

07-07-2006, 07:36

Desertress
07-07-2006, 07:38
Lauren ... from what i can gather its the coffee bean at the peir think... that would probably work out better anyway because i can take the boys to the playground after.

Looking forward to meeting you then.

Hiya Girlies!!
Just popped my head in to say hi. We're in the new house (I remembered how much I HATE moving!!) - and yesterday finished cleaning the old house so today am looking forward to a well deserved rest!

Would love to have coffee sometime next week, so will pop in early next week to see what you're all up to.

Hope you're all feeling better soon, what with your colds and flu's and teething babies! :hugs:

Talk to you soon, take care.

Hi Mandy,
Glad to see everything is finished for you and you can rest now. I hope the new house i great. I hated moving we we had to and it was only the first time we had moved so everyting was still in boxes. I'd hate to move now.. we have soooo much stuff.

How is the morning sickness going now? Getting any better?

ANyhow hope to catch up with you next week.

I haven't had any m/s since last Friday so hopefully it's not coming back - wishful thinking though!

11-07-2006, 08:45
It was really good to meet some bubhubbers - except I got really nervous and couldn't stop talking rofl  I'm so sorry Priscilla & Kristen lol I'll be quieter next time - it was just so good to talk to someone who is doing the same sort of thing as I am... and who doesn't grunt or cry back at me (DH & DS...)
If I haven't been officially banned I'm up for coffee again, maybe not at the Pier this time though?

Priscilla
11-07-2006, 16:40
Lauren don't be silly! :P

Coffee was great on Friday and yeah lets organise another for this week. Should we stick with Friday?

newmum2one
12-07-2006, 07:57

Friday is ok for me. About 10.30 again?

jodi
12-07-2006, 08:18
Friday is good for me too, although I'll have to wait and see if I've got m/s or not. Where are you thinking of meeting this time?

Priscilla
12-07-2006, 10:29
I'm happy with 10.30 too. Where to go...... we must we must we must we must we MUST find a place that's got a little play area for Logan and Tamsyn (I hope the spelling's correct). If Mandy and Tamsyn cannot make it this Friday, then all the more reason to find a place with a playground for Logan. Poor little angel must get so bored when we blah blah blah away!!!

There's Maccas, but their restaurants which, whilst are very kiddy friendly are not very pram friendly......

Does anyone know of a place?

Otherwise, I'm afraid we may be have to do Cairns Central again. Someone in an earlier post said they didn't want to go to Coast Roast, which means we're left with Jamaica Blue, Cairns Central Cafe or Coffee Club. Or the food court. Or the cafe/restaurant inside Myer. Or Tosca.

Geez I ramble!

Desertress
12-07-2006, 11:09
10:30 is good for me as well because thats about when chase wakes up from his morning sleep (if he has one). I agree that we need to find a place where the kids can play while we chat because they really do get very bored. Although i must admit logan was very good last week i was actually surprised. Most macc's arnt really pram friendly however the one out here at woree is pretty good. You can sit out side and i think there would be plenty of room for the prams. Just depends on weather we want to meet at a fast food place or not. It is a mccafe so has all the cakes and stuff as well.

I thini i will have to opt out for myre or toscas or those sorts of places because i think logan would go mental being inside and not really being able to move around. Let me know if anyone else has any other ideas of places to meet.

jodi
12-07-2006, 12:13
Kristen, I agree with the Maccas at Woree, they have a good sized outdoor area to sit in. And like you said, they have the McCafe, and the healthy choice menu thingy if you like that sort of thing ;) plus they're a bit cheaper than other cafes!

But I'm ok with anywhere, I don't have a pram (yet) so I'm easy as to where we go.

House full of Princesses
12-07-2006, 16:23
Hey girlies!

Maccas Woree would suit me too!! (And I luurrvvve their cakes and things!)
So is 10.30 on Friday a date?? :)

Priscilla
12-07-2006, 16:57

Welcome to our little corner of BubHub (I'm not the newbie anymore :D ). I've got just the one boy, 5 mths old, but chances are one day I'll have a number of boys too (no girls born into DH's family for several generations and mostly boys on my side too). you'll have to meet up with us for coffee, we chose maccas last time (I seem to recall "healthy options" mentioned as a reason but I think we all had cheesecake or chips!!!! ).

Hey there, Cairns is great, you'd love it hear. I'm from Sunshine Coast and at first it was a bit of a shock moving here - it's very laid back, but love it now.
With rents, it really does depend on where you're living. I used to be a Property Manager, and my mum is at LJ Hooker up here. You're looking anywhere between $230-$350 p/w, average about $270/$280 in a nice area. Areas I like are Brinsmead, Redlynch, Edge Hill, Earlville, Mount Sheridan. I'm not too sure what the Northern Beaches are like (Trinity Beach, Smithfield, Palm Cove etc). Have a look on realestate.com or real estates direct websites for more info as well. Maybe the other girls on here that rent might have more answers?
Good luck
Jodi

Hi everyone!

Wow THREE newbies!!

Mumof5boys - I agree with Lauren... WOW!! I'm running around like a headless chook half the time with one 10month old. Don't know how you do it! We'd love to meet you next time we all catch up!

Anab - Love to meet you next too, next time we all catch up. You mentioned you go to pramercies. I go on Mondays.... when do you go? I didn't go today as I was worried it was going to rain. Was going to go to the coffee meet afterwards today, but never made it.

Suemp - I'm sure you'll settle in just fine when you make it up here. Out of curiosity, why the move? I'm not renting at the moment, so can't help you out there, but like Jodi suggested, just try realestate.com. In terms of suburbs that are not too far from town..... well most places are about 15 mins drive pretty much no matter where you are going! If you like small towns, you like Cairns.

Everyone else - this whole catch up thing.... what do you all think about deciding on one place, day and time for every week. For those that can make it that week - great, if not then there's always the next week. This might be easier than having to work around everyone's schedule for the week. For now and like the past weeks, I'm good with any day and time except monday mornings as I go to pramercise. Or are we happy with Friday's 10:30am?
Oh and btw - David's got everything sorted with his uni down south and will be up by next weekend! About bloody time!

jodi
18-07-2006, 08:40
Priscilla that's great news about David. Bet you're counting the days until he arrives!
I agree with trying to stick with same place same day. Then we know in advance that's where it will be. Friday's 10.30 are good for me too. (stay at home mum and all, don't really have much of a life anyway :) )

Welcome to our corner of BubHub newbies!!

Weekly Meetings - I agree with you all - one day one place one time is a good idea - if it needs to change etc then we can arrange it but otherwise... 10.30 is still good for me!! Kevin calls us the "Mother Hens Club" which is what we're going to be meeting regularly (plus a duck apparently  ) Maybe we should just be a farmyard

Rent - I rent but only a two bedroom unit. It's 170 p/w but we're trying to upgrade to something bigger especially since we are thinking about TTC about Christmas time! (eek :barf: )

Suburbs - We're in Manunda but we really like Mount Sheridan and some parts of Edmonton but have been looking at places all over. As someone else said, it's only 20 minutes from one end of Cairns to the other (excl. northern beaches) and really depending on where you decide to work it could be significantly less. Kevin works in Parramatta Park and it's only 3 minutes away (it's two suburbs over).

Hmmm I think that's about all for now

Oh a quick question, as our kids get older, is craft something you would encourage them to do? Not anything full on, mainly things like activity kits with coloured paper, glitter, pipe cleaners things like that, and maybe once they're a little older (say 8-9) basic scrapbooking and cardmaking? Or are these things that have been completely phased out in favour of toys and games? Just interested...

thanks for your help.
last time i went to cairns was 10 years ago and i only stayed for 2 days so its hard to remember. my dp and i arent into restaurants, night clubs etc..just love fishing and barbies etc which is why we love smaller towns. y do we want to move ? to rent around here is for a house min 300 a week. (cheaper for units) but were not unit types. and its also turning into a concrete jungle. we are on the northern gold coast (hope island) which once was a small fishing vilaage. now its turning into resort style living for multi millionaires and we want our sons to grow up less superficial. ill give you an example a house sold the other day around the corner for 20 million !!!!! we have family in Ayr (south of townsville ) but havent travelled further north than that which is why i asked you guys
so once again thanks for your help:thumbsup:

jodi
18-07-2006, 10:17
Lauren, I think crafts is great for kids. I know a lady who does family day care and all day she has the kids painting, scrapbooking etc. It's great to get their minds going and it's something they can keep. I'm definitely getting our kids into it. I've seen how much excitement the kids get out of it, and how much they learn with my friend.

suemp, Cairns is definitely what you're looking for. My DH & I love to have friends over for BBQ's and stuff like that. Cairns has a very relaxed atmosphere to it. You don't get too many houses selling for 20million either!!

jodi
19-07-2006, 08:55
Is anyone going to the show? I'm not, haven't been for about 5 weeks. Not really keen on going when I'm 8 months pregnant either :)
What's everyone's plans for Friday? Since it's a public holiday didn't know if you all wanted to spend quality time with DP's or not. I'm keen for coffee if anyone else is.

Desertress
19-07-2006, 09:19
Well my delightful paretner is going away fishing with his father and brother for 4 days so i wont get to spend any quality time with him anyway. So im still keen for it.

Are we all happy to keep meeting at maccas or do you want to find somewhere else. Im hapy for maccas beucaise of the playground for logan but we can look into somewhere else if you girls didnt like it.

Desertress

Firstly, welcome to the gang, newbies!! Look forward to meeting you all!

And secondly, I won't be joining you girls this Fri, as DP has been in N.T. on business since Monday (gets back Thurs night) so we're looking forward to plenty of quality time over the long weekend! :devil6: (hehe, isn't it funny how a simple emoticon placed at the end can give the sentence a whole new meaning! )

Fridays at 10.30 suit me fine, too. Maybe we could vary the venue from week to week. We could even try meeting at a nice park somewhere with a playground, and pack a picnic? And someone might have a hot water urn so we could still enjoy a coffee - just a thought. And once I'm feeling a bit more settled in the new house and have set up the swingset, I'll have you all over for morning tea one week!

Well I've gotta run. I hope you're all happy and well! Talk to you soon.
Mandy xox

PS. Lauren - yes, I think it's a fantastic idea!! You go girl! :smiliedance:

jodi
19-07-2006, 13:16
I think varying the location would be good. I've been thinking of inviting you all around my place once we've finished doing up the patio, hopefully before bub is born. See you all Friday at 10.30

Priscilla
19-07-2006, 18:17
Varying the venue sounds great! Maybe we could just stick with Maccas down at Woree as a base and if someone wants to go to a different place that week (like a park) we can do that. I just figure, if there is a 'base' then we can just head there if there are no suggestions....

Lauren, when C is older I would definitely be encouraging him to explore his creative side with arts and craft. Whether he'll actually enjoy is a different issue altogether but I would most definitely introduce it to him and try to get him started on a few projects.

See you all Friday!

LOL Thanks for all the support girls!!!! As you know my entrepenuerial (sp?) side is trying to escape the humdrum of housework (isn't everyone trying to escape it??) and I came across something that had kid kits but I didn't know of any kids who still do that kind of thing besides at preschool. I have promised DH not to pursue it although I had already sent off for information so we'll see. He may need some convincing :devil6: (hey you're right, a whole new meaning from an emoticon  )

Anyhoo, Kev may be working this Friday, if so I'll be there, if not 'quality time' it will have to be  - even if it does consist of watching him take over the house with his beloved train set.

I think going to different places occasionally is a good idea, especially as the kids get older. Our place is way too tiny but we're looking into a bigger place so maybe then. We have to try and move soon anyway, because TA DA we've decided to TTC at Christmas!!!!!!

Talk to you all later.

HI girls, i though seeing as how i am up anyway i would check and see how it went on friday. I hope some people turned up. I feel bad about skipping out but with chase no sleeping i am function no where near normal and i just dont think i would have been much fun(not that i normally am anyway lol  ). I hope things get better with him once this cold is gone completley.

Anyhow i hope you had fun and if any went to the show i hope you had a good time. We did end up going as kevin was making an effort for us to do something together so that was really good...... even though he complained about the cost the whole time we were there. Logan went on a few little rides and had a good time but he got upset that he couldnt go on any of the bigger ones ie kamikaze:laughing: .

I am hoping to catch up next week but i will just see he we are going then and let you know. Untill then i hope you all have a good week. :fingerscrossed:

We didn't go to the show. I've been sick with the flu (again) since Friday, and it doesn't seem to be getting any better! It's not fun either when you have morning sickness at the same time. I've just been taking it easy this weekend, with Heath looking after me
Hopefully I'll feeling better to catch up next week. Have a good week girls

Jodi, I can totally sympathise with you - we've all had the flu since Thurs night too! (And by "we", I mean ALL FOUR OF US!) So the house has been a sad, sorry sight over the weekend! Nothing but bed rest, DVDs and throat lozenges! Slowly on the mend now I think, because we've got up and ventured out into several rooms of the house today, rather than just the brm/ensuite! That's how sad it's been!

:shame: And bubby Chase, darling, can you pleeeease let Mummy have some sleep. Kristen, I hope it gets better for you soon. Jodi, hope you're starting to feel better soon.

:hugs: to everyone, talk to you soon.

Hey ladies,
I haven't been online for a few weeks as my computer decided to crash but now I'm back and I thought I should see how you're all doing and if I've missed any meet ups. I think I've missed one since i last posted a message here. Anyway I see that you have agreed to meet on fridays which is great with me- should be able to make this friday. It will be great to meet everyone finally. I have been having bouts of homesickness (i emigrated here in april from england for those who don't know). Well when I say homesickness it is really more friend/family sickness cos I don't miss where I used to live too much just all the people. And I love Cairns. I live out at Redlynch and I really love living near mountains as where I lived in England was totally flat!
Well I won't waffle on too much otherwise I won't have anything to say on friday! :ecomcity: Where are you meeting? Maccas in Woree? Can someone let me know exactly where that is as I am still familiarising myself with the city. Also I am currently using the bus/cycle to get around. (pain in the bum with a 15mth old!) If I can get there I'll be there!
To all the new members a big hello. Hope to meet you soon.

Hi Caroline & mumof5boys, great to here that you can come on Friday's.
Caroline, Maccas at Woree runs parallel to the Bruce Highway at Woree. Between Woree/Earlville area (where Stockland shopping centre is) and White Rock. You can't miss it as you can see it from the road, and if you're catching a bus, Sunbus go straight pass there. I'm not sure that even makes sense, but the bus driver will know LOL
Hopefully I can make it on Friday, I'm not sure how the flu/morning sickness will go, I'll text either Mandy or Priscilla on Friday to let you all know if I can make it. Are we all ok for this Friday at Maccas 10.30 again? Hopefully we can catch up as last week didn't turn out very good with a couple of us getting sick.
Mandy, hope you're feeling better, I'm glad it was only me with the flu and not hubby as well cause I couldn't even look after myself!

Hope to catch up with you all on Friday
Jodi

HELLO EVERYONE

Whew I've made it through most of the end of financial year and quarterly BAS and life can soon turn back to normal.

I haven't been online for so long, obviously I have missed out on many opportunities to meet you all personally.

Two more weeks to go and then I can come and meet you. I have the inlaws here who want to spend as much time as possible with their granddaughter so are with me all the time.

Have you decided to make Maccas the spot to meet each week at the same time?

If thats the case I can just turn up and yell bubhub and hope to hell someone answers me:laughing:

If you have decided to make it a different venue each time I have a few suggestions that you may like.

Mt Sheridan shopping centre has a nice coffee shop which is child friendly and has toys etc for the kids to play with.

Muddies playground at the Esplanade has a coffee shop even though it is a bit exy in price.

Earlville shopping centre is pretty good with variety

Redlynch shopping centre is nice and quiet (until the kids turn up  )

Another thought is maybe a picnic at a park, thats always fun and relaxing.

Anyway, looking forward to meeting you all soon

Kirsten

I think its been decided that Maccas at Woree is the place unless we arrange something different for that week... And you won't have to yell Bubhub lol two weeks ago 5-6 of us turned up and it looked like a pram convention . Looking forward to catching up with everyone - but you all have to keep me out of the McCafe - I have to be supportive of DH who's a finalist in the Cairns Posts' Lose2Win competition so I have to eat the same rabbit food  I'm giving him lol. Hamburger/deli choice ok though for me coz I'm not being weighed .

G'day girls,
How's it going with all of you? Have just remembered it is my eldest son's sport's day on friday and I will be going there to cheer him on:smiliedance: (my life wouldn't be worth living if I didn't!) So I am going to have to miss meeting up on friday which is a shame as I am so keen to meet some new people soon!
As I mentioned in my last post I am using the bus to get around. I can't take the pram on the bus as it is too heavy carrying it and my son so this makes it difficult meeting up at certain places. I was thinking the Maccas you met at was near the stocklands shops but as Jodi mentioned it's a bit further out than that. I agree with Kirstlea on Cairns central as a good meeting place as I can loan a stroller there and don't have to worry about my 15mth old running riot! I know you have all agreed on Maccas in Woree as your regular meeting place but if anyone did fancy meeting at Cairns central/muddies playground/Redlynch central/Earlville then let me know. We could make it another day in the week then we always have friday as a meet up time too. They are a bit easier for me as I only have to get 1 bus there and I live at Redlynch so the shopping centre is walking distance for me.
Well I hope that all makes sense! Talk soon,
Caroline

Hi Caroline, we'll probably end up changing the venue from time to time as a couple of people do live on the other side of town.
Kirsten good to hear you're still around  Can't wait to meet you either.
As I said in an earlier post, hopefully I can make it on Friday. My flu has gotten better now, just left with the morning sickness.

Catch up with you all soon

Hey guys... i m sorry but i am going to have to forgo the meet again this week as we are having a dilema with the bridesmaid dresses that needs to be sorted out.

Im not sure how im gonna go for the next fre weeks and i will have ALOT to organise but i will make it if i can.

27-07-2006, 14:20
Hi everyone!!
Oh Kristen, I hope your dress dilemma gets sorted quickly :fingerscrossed:
Looking forward to meeting some of our new mums tomorrow, and catching up with the old gang too! ;) Just wanted to let you all know, that if Tamsyn is the only 'kid on feet' tomorrow, that we can go somewhere else if everyone likes? (Just thought it might be an idea to keep Maccas for another week when we have lots of bigger-kids to entertain, whereas Tamsyn would be just as happy colouring in on her own). just a thought, anyway. If it's too late to change or if everyone is happy with maccas, then that's cool.
My thought was maybe Cairns Corner Cafe (upstairs at Cairns Central, near Myer and Pumpkin Patch), because it's soooo roomy in there for prams. Let me know what you all think, anyway.

Enough rambling from me :ecomcity: . Will pop back later on!

I hope i get it sorted out quickly to. Irene was supposed to have had the alteration done on them and sent them down here for my bridesmaids to try and see if they fit. One of my bridesmaids leaves for italy on monday and dosnt get back till 4 days before the wedding so i really need her to try hers on as it was her dress that needed the most major alterations. Anyhow i rang irene yesterday to see if she had sent them down here yet and she hadnt even done the alterations on them yet:banghead: She is supposedly goign to get them done and sent down here for tomorrow so the girls can try them on... other wise it will be a mad dash up there in the few days before the wedding to get the tried and have any last minuet alterations done:thumbsdown: . Hopefully the dresses will make it down hee tomorrow tho.

Oh bugger Kristen, what a pain in the (_|_). (hmm, just realised that looks like a really weird bum. But you know I meant bum).
I'm sure she'll see to it that the dresses are here for tomorrow. I mean, she would know how important it is, so she'd surely move heaven and earth to get them here. Don't worry, it'll be fine I'm sure! I mean, look at Lauren - she managed to plan a wedding in, like, 2 minutes or something crazy like that ;) , so you'll get there!

27-07-2006, 15:35

I just read this soooo funny!! I was so sick Mum did all the organising and after all it was only for about 10 people  ... Don't worry Kristen everything will fall into place, and the stuff that doesn't will be something to laugh about (like my veil being ripped - wasn't laughing at the time... then the replacement falling out of my hair just before I walked up the aisle!!)

Just an update to let you girls know that the dresses did turn up thankfully and the most important one fitted pretty well. The other girls needs to be taken up around the neck strap a little but that can be done when i go up for my next fitting in the next 2 weeks. So far its going alright... getting stressed out through as it gets closer. Im sure it will all go fine tho.

Kristen, that's great news about the dresses. Only 4 weeks to go, you must be soooo excited! I remember the way I was feeling a couple of weeks before my wedding. I'm sure everything will run smoothly ... I haven't asked, are you going on a honeymoon?

Desertress
31-07-2006, 11:55

01-08-2006, 12:31
Relaxing has never been my strong point and i dont think its going to sart now:rolleyes: I am felling a little better about the people comming now as all of kevins mothers side have snubbed us for the wedding because we didnt invite 1 sister.... lol.... dosnt bother me i didnt want any of them there anyway i just didnt have an excuse not to invite the rest. now i dont have to worry about them.

Got the boys outfits today.... both have little vested suits sooo cute... got both for $54 BARGIN.... most other places where charging $80 each.

Only mayjor thing im stressing about is having enough money to pay for everything in time... especially seeing as the rates bill just came in... couldnt have some at a worse time and its due 2 days after the wedding.
Anyhow im sure we will work it out.

Jodi- Im so sorry to hear that your morning sickness is so bad. I can only imagine what it must be like to be still getting it this far along and so badly. I was only sick for the first 3 -4 months and that was plenty for me. I hope things get better for you soon. Maybe Nina will come alittle early for you and give you a break.

Just thought I'd let you all know I'm still alive (barely), but not coping too well. Don't think I'll be venturing out of the house too much for the next couple of weeks. :crying:
Morning sickness is STILL coming and going, back pain hasn't eased. Bub is posterior and sitting right on my back, causing all this dreadful pain. But she has engaged a little more the dr said, so fingers crossed that's its not too far away. I've had my MIL and my mum come over this week to do my housework, and poor DH has to come home after working 10 hours and cook and clean for us, while I lay in bed ALL day barely able to move. I did get out of the house today to go to a breastfeeding seminar, which was interesting, but now I'm really tired and will probably sleep the rest of the day.
So not sure when I'll see you all next, hopefully I'll be telling you I've had the baby soon!!!! :fingerscrossed:

hi ladies,

just wondering if any of you know of any good places to get decent maternity clothes in cairns? i went to endevour, kmart and target today and couldn't find anything :( i don't even really need maternity clothes just mostly bottoms that will last me a bit longer than a few weeks:banghead:

I know Big W had a catalogue out i think last week with alot of maternity stuff in it. Shirts as well as pants. It also depends on how much you want to spend. Pumpkinpatch and hotmummies have nice stuff but it costs a fortune. The other option you have is to look on ebay for a bargin. Kmart anf target get maternity stuff on and off but never really have alot.

New Mummy, I couldn't find any maternity wear when I wanted it, but Big W has quite a bit in now, and I have seen the belly belt in target if that helps (you know, the thing that you use to make your regular pants and skirts fit over your tummy, I think it goes behind the zipper?)

Hi Everyone

Great to meet you Mandy, Priscilla and Colleen, and Kristen albeit a quick visit. Hope all goes well for you Kristen on Saturday.

New mummy I just read your post re maternity clothes. I have the belly belts which you are most welcome to borrow. They cost about $20 odd dollars for three pieces of elastic and 3 pieces of material, it seemed like an expensive item but I have used them twice and they have been borrowed quite alot so I've got my moneys worth. If you are keen let me know and some how I can get them to you.

Hopefully I'll be able to catch up again this Friday.

I'm with Colleen - stay offline for a few days and EVERYTHING happens ROFL.
Congratulations Jodi & Heath, I drove past the hospital the other day and thought you must have just about been there lol. Hope everything went well, and can't wait to meet the newest little one.
Kristen, don't stress too much. Easier said than done I know, but all these little things will all come together. Just make sure you have everything you need on the day, I forgot to wear the brooch that has been worn by my mother and g-grandmother on their wedding days, and my bridesmaids forgot to give me one of the hanging things for my bouquet (just happened to be the only one my mum had made for me). But don't let these things get in the way of a fantastic day, you won't remember the bad things, and if you do, it will only be to laugh at it. Things that freaked me out on the day are fond memories now.
Looking forward to meeting the newbies, sorry I couldn't come last week will be there today.

Hi girls. Home now, came home on Wednesday. The birth went pretty well, 9 hours in total. Was induced at 2pm and Nina was born at 11pm. On our anniversary as well!!! She weighed 2.98kg, 49cm in length. She's so tiny. Sleeps like you wouldn't believe, am expecting that to change any day now! Can't wait to show her off to you all, but I'll give it a couple of weeks before I venture out too far.

Has anyone here used the CBH? I am just curious as to what it is like I am not a huge fan as I had one appointment here and waited five hours after our pre booked appoinment, that was two years plus ago though.

Can you choose to go home earlier if you want too.......as in the day I give birth.............LOL?
Are the visiting hours strict? As I have never been away from dd and really dont want to be?

I know they do tours and stuff but I cannot attend these and from what I have heard its not the best care before or after the birth......so anyone shed a little light for me??

It sounds to me that you just had a bad experience, CBH is the best maternity facility in Cairns. Cairns Private is good and its nice that your partner/hubby can stay and you get your own room etc but the CBH is much more modern. I am telling you this from my point of view and a few friends that have gone private.

Yes they will let you go home asap as long as nothing is wrong. The visiting hours are 10am to 1pm and 3pm to 8pm. The reason they do this is so that new mums can get a little rest or get themselves organised etc. The no visiting betweeen 1pm and 3pm is really strict for the above reason. Even hubbys and partners are not allowed in. They can sneak in early in the morning though and stay a little later at night (not much though).

All my visits to Antenatel have been pretty spot on with time factors and this is my 3rd pregnancy so I really think you were just unlucky. With the before and after care I can honestly say I wasn't happy the first time but there were exceptional circumstances (before was great the after was terrible). With my second they were fantastic and serioulsly I couldn't fault them and the circumstances were even more exceptional than the first.

You have to remember they cannot control how many women are having babies so sometimes they are stretched with staff which I don't blame CBH for, its the Government and we all know what the situation is there. On the whole I would still recommend CBH any day as the staff do their very best under very tough conditions and always nice and caring imo.

Hope you have a good experience this time round;)

I had Nina at CBH and highly recommend them. A friend of mine went to Cairns Private and they aren't as modern as Kristlea stated and if there are any problems/emergencies (god forbid that should happen) Cairns Private aren't equipped to deal with it and you have to go over to the Base.
You can leave hospital from at least 6 hours after giving birth providing everything is ok. Another friend of mine stayed overnight and went home at CBH. I stayed for 3 days as bub was a bit small and lost a bit of weight in the first couple of days, so they wanted to keep an eye on her.
I was lucky that they weren't very busy so I had a room to myself, but the day I left they had 12 births, and now they have no more beds!!

I had Finn in the CBH and found then to be very nice and had no problems what soever (except he weighed a tonne) . I found the staff where very kind and caring and the facilities are very modern I had to share a room but only 2 to a room not four like in Gladstone. and I had Finn in the early morning and went home that afternoon (as unlike little Nina he was a big boff head) . I would definately recommend the CBH maternity ward

Hi thank you your replies........where I had dd I had a room to myself and dh could come and go as he pleased at anytime, he even stayed the whole time O/N while I was there.

So it will be a shock to have regulations, the hospital was pretty busy but we never called the nurses like the other women........which kept them extremely busy.

I am hoping I can leave the same day but I am guessing it will be possible if both bubs and I are in good health with the current birth rate.:smiliedance:

Congratulations Jodi, even though I haven't met you yet I'm sure I will soon;)

Miyamommy - you really only have two choices in Cairns for maternity care, either CBH or Cairns Private. You must have private medical insurance to get into Cairns Private so if you have it great, if not you don't get any choices:( . Bit of a bugger in that we don't have a choice but thats one of the few draw backs of living in Paradise:)

If you do have medical insurance, why don't you go and do a quick tour of the maternity wards at both hospitals then you can make your own informed choice.

It doesn't take long and the antenatal classes that they do at CBH also include the tour. They do these classes either at night over a few weeks or you can do the whole lot on Saturday (I think).

Theres a whole of things that you learn at these courses besides baby stuff, like how do you get into the hospital if its after hours and what choices do you have in the way of giving birth etc etc. CBH is very pro active and will encourage you to do it your way but if you haven't had a child at CBH before you really should make the time to get to one of those classes and find out what is available and learn their system, as I am sure every hosptial has their own way of doing things.

Good luck

Kirsten

I cant go to any of those classes/tours as dh works 7 day weeks.....mainly week ends(and cannot ask for to many days off as his only been there for a month), I would prefer to go to Mareeba hospital as they have the BEST maternity ward in the far north, but that is a little far for prenatal care and CBH wouldnt touch me if I wanted to birth in Mareeba.

I do not have any other form of care for dd and cannot take her with me as she is hypo active and I dont really want her touching anything at the hospital so I'd prefer to keep my visits at a minimum.

Thank you for your input and clearing it up for me I tried asking these questions when I rang up but the birth suite ignored me a transfered me back to the woman at prenatal(who couldnt answer my question and transfered me to her).

Thank you and I guess I will see what happens on thurs at my first appointment.

Well heres another suggestion, come and meet up with us at Maccas at Woree on Fridays and we can fill you in on all the stuff we can remember. I only just started meeting up with the girls 2 weeks ago and really they only just started these meetings back in June so its not a group of women who have known each other for ages and make you feel like your intruding if you know what I mean. They are very friendly and your dd will have fun playing with our kids.

Its got to be better than not having any info. Or if thats not any option for you I can meet up with you on Tuesday mornings in Smithfield. I come down to Cairns nearly everyday anyway:rolleyes:

For the record Mareeba is only good for low risk births they won't have anything to do with you if you might have any complications what so ever. I live past Kuranda and have to go to CBH for that reason.

I'm a bit late to this discussion lol but so hard to get online over the weekend. I had Cammy at CBH and everyone was lovely in maternity and birthing suite, visiting hours were pretty strict, but after I went over to the ward I pretty much got left alone except for the normal checks so take something to do! We have private cover but I'll be having my other babies at CBH probably. The staff are pretty overworked but you can tell they love what they do. Come along on Friday and I'm sure everyone can put their 2c worth in lol - we do get pretty noisy!!!!

Miyamommy,

How come the CBH won't give you your pre-natal care if you decided to give birth in Mareeba? Did they tell you that? I didn't think the hospitals could refuse care?

I question this because I received my pre-natal care in Melbourne but had arranged to give birth here in Cairns. You just have to call the Mareeba Hospital and make arrangements with them regarding your expected due dates. I received my pre-natal care in Melbourne up until I was eight months and at my last pre-natal appointment, I asked them to give me ALL my pre-natal info so that I could take it up to Cairns. I had told both hospitals right at the beginning what my intentions were and everyone was very helpful. Once I arrived in Cairns, I went to my final pre-natal appointment where I gave them all my details from the hospital in Melbourne. There is a name for this type of care but for the life of me, I cannot remember what it's called. Do you ahve a GP? You can always check with your GP to see what suggestions he/she has.

There is also a type of pre-natal care where, rather than going to the hospital, a GP can give you. Not ALL GPs can, as they need to do further study to be qualified. If you can find one in Cairns, you can see him/her and then have your details sent to the Mareeba Hospital for birth. Again, I cannot remember what this type of care is.

Do you have friends/relatives in Mareeba? How long before your due date would you go up to Mareeba?

I don't really have grounds to compare post-natal care since I only have the one child but I found CBH to have met and exceeded my expectations. The only  was that I had to wait about five hours in the birthing suite before there was a bed available like one of the other mums, but as that mum (sorry I can't remember who said this) pointed out, they have no control over how many women gives birth that day. Other than that, ALL the midwives were extremely helpful - they even told each other at the shift changes to help me out because Cameron was crying non-stop. They'd all crowned him "The Unsettled One"! Seriously, they took turns at coming in to chat with me even though I knew they were busy - just to make sure C wasn't giving me too much grief. At night, they'd take him so that I could get a few hours sleep before having to feed him again. Even the tea lady was extremely friendly - or in my case, she was the hot chocolate lady!!
The visitor hours are specified BUT I found they didn't enforce it. I had visitors stay THROUGH the 'no visitor hours' and no one came to say anything. Although, I'm sure my friends/family would not have been let in had they been downstairs. A friend of mine said that she got an "Ocean View" room as her window literally looked out over the inlet HAHAHAH!!!

Anyway enough of me :ecomcity: :ecomcity: :ecomcity: 'ing away. Will leave you to it but do let us know what you decide either way.

Priscilla
29-08-2006, 21:34
miyamommy - SHARED CARE!!!! That's the name of the type of care where you receive your pre-natal/antenatal care from a GP but then give birth at another hospital. Now, I cannot remember if getting antenatal care from one hospital and giving birth at another hospital is also called Shared Care as well or not so you may have to look into this.

Hi Im from Cairns but live in Japan atm. Been following the thread and feeling very jealous that I cant get to Maccas!!! I used to live at Machans but would of made the super long arduous treak to Woree to come.

The reason I finally pipped in was I used to work at the Private Hospital just before they changed from Calvary. The nurses there were mostly temp workers - a lot from the UK on working holidays. They were nice but it wasnt their hospital, usually they would only be there a week to a month.

Also because Cairns is small as previously mentioned a lot of the docs work at the base...finish that shift then pop on over to the Calvary. Tired, stressed, overworked, you can guess the results.

Also the private hospital doesnt have that many private rooms so in most cases you dont get a private room. I dont know the visiting hours now but before they were kinda short and strict.

That being said a few of my friends have given birth at CBH and there were a few complaints - the midwives were b****es about breastfeading. Two friends went home feeling totally incompentent. One complaint about the nurses. And two about the tea lady always waking her up to see if she wanted tea. Though someone I know left the private hospital and was never able to breastfeed and she blamed it totally on the middies slamming her confidence. I have read the horror birth stories on this forum and its a common complaint everywhere it seems.

Lets just say if I was in Cairns now and not stuck in Japan I would be gearing up to give birth in CBH in 7& 1/2 months. You can go private at CBH too.

Oh and the private has been so busy in the womens unit that on a few occasions I remember D&C patients were roomed with mothers and their newborns by mistake!!!

Sorry its a long winded bore... oh and...
Congratulations Kristen!!!

Hello!
I've been following this thread on and off but haven't posted as I don't get online much these days. I just thought I'd add my thoughts on CBH mainly to give a huge thumbs up to them  because I could not fault them one bit. Antenatal care was excellent... never had to wait for an appointment and staff were always friendly. Antenatal classes were excellent! I did three Saturdays in a row with my hubby and a few months after our daughter was born we went to a reunion of the class and I'm now good friends with four of the other mums. CBH birth suite is excellent and staff fantastic. During labour I felt completely in control the whole time as they gave me choices and let me birth the way I wanted. My midwife Fiona was a star and although I ended up needing intervention (ventousse) the two doctors assisting were really great. At no time did I feel uncomfortable, uncared for, or just another statistic. There were lots of babies born the same day and so I had to share a room, but that didn't really bother me. If you want privacy you just pull the curtain! I stayed for five days because Laura had jaundice, but I loved being in hospital. I didn't need to worry about cooking or cleaning, etc, just me and my baby. I also found the nursing staff really on the ball... I had people coming in at least three times a day checking up on me and my baby. The morning after the birth, they showed me and DH how to bath her and gave us tips about her belly button stump, jaundice, nappy rash, (and all the other funny marks babies get), because being new parents we really didn't have a clue! And during the night more staff would wander in and see how I was doing. I got plenty of help establishing breastfeeding and so when I left hospital I felt completely confident and almost sad to say goodbye to some wonderful nurses. At home I was visited by a midwife who I had met during antenatal visits. They came by two or three times in my second week home (after my parents left), to make sure I was coping okay.
I have a friend who is a midwife who currently works in Central Queensland and she has said that if ever she has children she will move to Cairns to have them at CBH as it's the best maternity ward she has ever worked on. You have to remember too that CBH has to cater for a lot of babies from Cape York and the Torres Strait, so they have more funding and more staff than many regional hospitals. My cousin had her son at Rockhampton and she left feeling so disillusioned. She had no help with how to bath the baby or how to breastfeed correctly, and they never asked her about her bleeding or if she was in pain, etc. And she had a shocker birth. She said as soon as she was in the ward, she didn't see a nurse for days unless she rang for one.

Congrats to the new parents and baby Nina and wedding for Kristen! So I hope we'll see your picture in The Cairns Post for the babies and weddings pages!
I'm afraid can't meet any of you because I have other commitments on Fridays (plus Woree is a hell of a long drive from Kewarra Beach! Petrol costs a fortune!) A few mums and bubs I know meet on Wednesday mornings for the Babes in Arms movie session at Earlville cinemas (although we only go when it's a good movie), so perhaps we can all meet up for that one day. Will keep you posted when a good flick comes along.

Kirstlea... it only just occured to me that I never got back to you about that crazy woman and her crazy letter. It turns out I couldn't get her address after all, so I'm sorry you weren't able to write a reply. What a nutbag!

Okay, I've rambled on enough... have a great week ladies! :D

THanks everyone for you well wishes. The day actually went really well.... no major problems at all. There was only a few thins that didnt go to plan .....like my drive bein 45mins late and making me 20mins late because he was at the car wash...... The only other things were that noone was really eating at the receptin because they were to busy drinking and filled up on the nibblies. By the time the main food was ready people were eiter full or to drunk to really care about food so we had ALOT of left over stuff but not alot will really be wasted because its maily meat. Chase was very over tired at the reception and clung to me all night because he hadnt really seen me all day so i didnt really get to relax at all but the rest of the day was still great.

We should have some great photos tho and some especially cute ones of the ceremony... when we were holding hands saying our vows logan was standing infront of us holding our hands to.. and then half way through he popped into the space between our arms and was standing thee saying "we getting married" lol

Hi everyone
Geez you girls can talk ROFL   Took forever to read these posts lol. Just kidding.
Kristen - so glad everything went well and can't wait to see the photos.
Priscilla - I had the ocean room at CBH too! (Or was that me you were talking about? Did I already tell you that?? ) The tea lady never woke me up, but the woman between me and the door always had her curtains pulled so the tea lady would just call out softly from the door, I usually didn't hear her!
Newbies to the thread - hi! If you can't make it to Woree or the day doesn't suit, maybe suggest a different venue or day - some of us might be able to make it! (I certainly don't mind drinking coffee with the girls twice or three or four or five times a week :p ) We have previously met at Cairns Central (apparently not the cafe at Myer, hey Mandy??!!??) but anywhere is usually ok. Hopefully we'll be moving to Gordonvale soon, so doesn't matter to me, it will still be a bit of a drive, but who cares? Washing can wait!
Anyway, BIG news - Cammy rolled over completely for the first time yesterday! I was on hold with the Real Estate and he just plopped himself over, I don't know who was more surprised, me or him!

Hey I meant to say the other day in response to CBH discussion -
Someone said on the thread that the nurses are a bit overanxious when it comes to BF. I found that they were a bit too, until I found that if you're firm and say no, I'm happy to bottle feed, or I'm happy to do both or whatever they tend to leave you alone a bit. I had enormous trouble trying to BF but in the end told them that I was going to bottle feed but still try and get him to BF to eventually go back to just BF.
My point is this: when I went to see my GP (I think it was Dr Goodall at the time) he asked me whether the "BF Nazi Nurses" had been at work when I told him I was bottle feeding.
He said to me that as long as bub was eating and gaining weight, not to listen to them too much if I was having lots of trouble and that it was perfectly ok to bottle feed, and that I wasn't a bad mother for doing so. This was the best thing anyone could ever have said to me as some of the nurses had made me feel like a failure, especially as my milk supply was dwindling. So in a nutshell, the CBH was great, but don't let the nurses get you down over BF if you can't/don't want to. Oh and if you do want to, the Lactation Consultants are really friendly.

Hints - Airconditioning!!!!!!
If you don't have air-con - fill a spray bottle with water and spray mist on your body.
or hang out at shopping centres.

hi ladies,

just wondering how you all deal with the heat? i'm nearly 20 wks and i'm not good with heat at the best of times but i'm finding it hot already  just wondering if u have any tips on staying kool?

Oh you poor thing, I hate the heat ... don't know why I live in Cairns when I hate the heat so much ;)
like shellsbub said, air-con if you've got it. If you have a pool, or can go to the pool often, then go. Have cold showers during the day when you're feeling it the most. You'll probably notice it a lot a night as well, so make sure you've got some light sheets on your bed and wear light stuff to bed, or nothing. Always keep a water bottle next to you.
Well that's my advice, hope you don't suffer too much with it.

just remember your health and the baby's health come first. If you dont feel up to working and it is taking too much out of you try to see if you can get reduced hours and work part time not full time

I totally agree with that. I started reducing my hours at 20 weeks and had to finish up at 28 weeks (due to morning sickness). We were both hoping I'd work a little longer but it just got too hard. You've got to look after number one.

You mean the one on Reservoir Road? I use that one. I'm really lazy with cleaning my car (normally pay my brother to do it!!) I found them pretty good, and they've got yummy food inside while you wait for your car to be done. I thought the prices were reasonable as well.

Thank goodness I'm not the only one. I thought I was the only one who uses it...

I feel a bit better now. I got a full detail from there, and the car came back looking like brand new. It was awesome.

Hi everyone
I have emerged from the mountain of boxes and bags that was my home for the last week - the house looks a lot better now and we got the net back today!!! YAY! Still got to clean the old unit though :gloomy: that's a weekend job though I think as I tried yesterday but C was a bit naughty so we came home. So I think Daddy might have to clean while I watch and entertain C :D what do you all think?!
Gordonvale is great, so quiet! There are no screeching tyres, no sirens (ok once there was but not EVERY night!), very little traffic, no noisy neighbours... Our house is so sunlight it was like we were living in a cave!
I'm hoping to come tomorrow morning, have to go to QT first as this naughty duckling didn't change her licence to her married name so may as well go and do that with the new addy. DH can do his online as his name's not changing - how rude!
Great to see Mandy and Jodi last week and Cooooollllllllleeeeeeeeeeen I got a nurse of a beautiful little girl! Ha ha!! ALMOST got me clucky lol.
As for the car wash cafe, did someone say it was reasonably priced? DH wants his car detailed but he thinks it will be too expensive. I'd love to surprise him with it for Christmas... Did anyone get a sedan done, and how much did it cost approx?
Anyway, got to go... Got a week's worth of surfing to do!!

Full Detail for say a Commadore(thats the biggest sedan right?) an inside+outside= $200 includes full cut and polish outside, vacum, interior polish, engine bay, windows ect.

Just the outside is about $100 from memory(pregnancy brain).....the full makes the car look like brand new.

My car is a Ford sedan and I think it was about $200. they did a great job. I really need to take it again, it's looking a bit dirty...i'm so lazy aren't I!!

Lauren that is great that you've moved and it's much nicer. Us southern Cairns girls do live in better country don't we!! Hehe

I won't be able to come tomorrow, but hope to catch up next week.

hi all,

noticed that no one has posted for a few dayz so just thought i'd pop in and say hi  i have my first ante natal appointment at the hospital on tuesday. bub has been kicking up a storm the last few dayz and they are getting stronger and stronger :yelclap: i'll be 21 wks tomorrow! i can't believe how quickly time has gone! and as people keep telling me its just going to go faster!!!! i thought i was rather organised in getting things that i needed but now that i look at the list i have i still have LOTS to go!!! its mostly little stuff like nappy cream and baby wash and things like that but its still a fair bit of stuff lol. also i have a little question.....i'm planning on bf and i'm just wondering is it worth buying formula or not? dp doesn't really want me to bf coz he thinks it will cut him out of feeding bub and being able to get up in the middle of the nite instead of me (how sweet :D ) but as i've told him thats wot breast pumps r for lol. well think i've :ecomcity: enuf.....hope everyone is well!

hey new_mummy,

you should take advantage with the sales at the moment and stock up on the baby stuff. I know Target is having a sale on baby stuff, and Big W have pretty good prices too.
DH was the same as your DP about feeding. I've expressed a couple of times and he's fed Nina. Just make sure you give it a couple of weeks first (to learn to b/f & let your milk supply come in properly) before expressing. Not everyone can express either, a couple of girlfriends of mine who have good milk supply just can't express for some reason. A couple of times now we've given Nina one bottle of formula at night as I needed a break. She was feeding every hour and after 4 hours I was exhausted. We buy S26 in the sachets as the formula in the tin must be discarded one month after being opened. I personally don't see it being a problem. I only do it once a night, and I've only done it 4 times so far. A friend of mine gives her DS one formula a night, every night, since he was one week old.
Another way he can help in the middle of the night is to change their nappy and bring him/her to you so you can feed in bed. DH does that every now and then. The midwives at the Base will probably show you how to feed while lying down, they were really encouraging that.

How is work going ... you still over it!! When do you plan on finishing up, and what do you do? (You've probably already said, but I can't remember)

thanx for the tips jodi. yeh still over work, i'm finishing up in december (december 22 to be exact!) not that i'm counting or anything :p i am an admin assistant at an envrionmental and geotechnical consulting company (ie if u want to build a house on a hill we tell u what u need to do to make sure it will be stable) its amazing what can take it out of u when u are pg tho! i can get so tired at work depending on the situation! and i'm finding i'm getting stressed much easier altho i have always been a pretty "high strung" person - i just keep telling myself that there is only 13 wks to go!

I should be able to make this Friday, who turned up last week? Same place again?

I understand what you mean about taking it out of you when you are at work I had a very physical job and some days it would be so tiring that when I got home after a long day and night I would fall asleep stright away, I worked practically up and untill DD was born. They didnt have anyone to replace me(trainnies) but DD was due during the busiest period.

It was also so stupid with the staff they constanly complained they couldnt do certain jobs because it was too hard.....but if a pregnant women can do it easily you can do it too, is all I'd say to them........LOL.
