Hi all! This is the story of my beautiful DD's arrival to the world...
In the last few weeks of my pregnancy I had high blood pressure was admitted to hospital overnight and put on meds to lower it, but unfortunately they did not work as well as planned- so it was decided that at 39+3weeks I would be induced.
Arrived at hospital at 8 in the morning wednesday 10th may- very anxious/excited/scared/happy- (take your pick!haha!) and waited to have my waters broken. Was quite busy, so I waited until 10am when the midwife came in to break them. She did it straight away and told me that someone else was using the drugs to bring on contractions so I would have to wait for her to deliver her baby to use them if my contractions didn't come on thier own... turns out this was NOT an issue- by 10.30 my contractions were here and VERY painful. By 12noon they were coming every 2mins and lasting a minute. At 1pm I could handle it no longer so I asked for an epidural...
10 mins later... bliss... :D Couldn't feel a thing! Hubby almost passed out watching the needle go in my back though- so it must look painful! They did an internal at this stage and I was 4cm dilated, the midwife told me I might even deliver before 9pm! The next few hours were great! I just relaxed reading magazines and chatting to DH. At 4pm I started feeling the contractions again and they quickly got very painful so I asked for them to top up the epidural. They did so and then decided to do another internal to see how I was progressing. She has a look the announced- "oh- you're fully dilated!"
So the epidural was promptly turned off (this I was NOT happy about hehe!) and we started to push. Because it had just been turned off I could not feel a thing, I had to feel my belly go hard and then push with all my might... This was difficult because I had no idea if I was doing anything or not, but the midwives seemed happy so I kept on my merry way. About 20mins later I started to get some feeling back- not pain, just the feeling to push. This was great because I had renewed enthusiasum to push this baby out- also I could see the reflection in the midwifes glasses of her head crowning and that was fantastic incentive!
My hubby was doing great wiping my face and telling me how well I was doing so when he said to me "the heads almost out!" I decided to give the hardest push I could fathom and with this her head was out! She was trying to breath at this stage and they were a little worried since the rest of her was still inside, so I quickly pushed again on the next contraction and she was out!! She was placed on my chest just as she pooped everywhere (lovely I know) but she was perfect and beautiful. It was such a wonderful surprise that she was a girl as everyone was convinced I was having a boy! Rhianna Grace was born at 5.08pm about 7 hours after having my waters broken- 3838grams (8lb7oz), hc 36cm and 51cm long.
I ended up with some stitches, but not too bad and no real complications EXCEPT when they were delivering the placenta they discovered a knot in her cord!! Very scary, but it was loose and close to the placenta end so it was not tightening while she was coming out... but still- i'm glad I was holding her in my arms when I found that out.
So all in all I had a wonderful birthing experience (bar the knot) and if I could do it again just like that I would!! And with that I would like to add that I had a very positive induction story, with very little pain, so don't worry they don't all turn out bad!! ;)
