We are not lucky enough to have a holiday house, although we know many people who are.

Has anyone who has one of these wonderful holiday houses that is sitting there empty for many weeks thought of offering it up to some of the bushfire refugees to use whilst they get back on their feet? It would be wonderful for them to have something to call home for a short time, something that is a home. And to be somewhere that is a little bit nicer than the skeletal remains of the bushland and townships around them.

It is only a suggestion, but even if just one person does this, imagine how much easier it would make one devastated family.

We have a holiday house and we have offered it to friends of friends who have lost it all. Our holiday house is here in Qld though and they have said "thank you, can we think about it" and of course they can, for as long as they need to. It's a long way from their family and friends, and support network but even if they wanted to have a "break", it's there for them if they need it.

That's really kind of you. :yelclap:

Unfortunately of a lot of the people I know with a holiday house, most would not be as generous. My sister would rather have it available for their family if they need it or to get some extra income. Sad.

No no, I'm a bit :o that we haven't done more. That's the very least we can do.

It's pretty inspiring to read through the ABC-online blog "can you help" -- there were so many offers of houses, rooms, flats, campervans, transport, agistment, clothes, helping hands (including doctors, lawyers, social workers and Slow Food Melbourne offering catering), furniture, veterinary care etc that the blog literally filled up and ABc could not allow any more posts. that was on the Sunday night!

so yes, lots of people have offered their holiday homes, and one couple who run cottages as their business offered ALL their cottages. so many people offered their spare room/s, granny flats etc, it just made me all teary to read it.

 to that oft-disputed thing "Aussie mateship" it really does come out when the excrement hits the airconditioning.
