I am thinking of moving to Newcastle and was just wondering if anyone knows of any cheap places i could stay whilst looking for something more permanant? I'm not too fussed on the type of accommodation.. could be a caravan park, motel.. whatever so long as it isn't too expensive. Also don't mind if its outside of Newcastle so long as it's not too long of a drive to get there.
So far my googling hasn't come up with much so any help would be good.
TIA
There's a backpackers resort right in Newcastle CBD.
Also check out Quest serviced apartments. Not sure how much they are though. I've never had to use them.

Thanks for the reply. I should have added in that the accommodation has to be child friendly so that counts out backpacker accommodation.
I will look into the quest apartments.
I remember a few years ago when i was in Newcastle there was a few cheap motels.. around $60/night... i spose something like that would be ok if its short term. Although i would still like cheaper. Like how some places have caravan parks where you can rent a cabin for under $300/wk. I'm pretty sure there is nothing like that in Newcastle but was thinking someone might know somewhere in a surrounding area?

There is a hotel Ibis in the CBD (i think.....) and a Formula one in wallsend, which is about a 20min drive into the CBD.
Not too many Caravan parks I don't think....there is one in Maitland, but thats a 35-45min drive from the CBD (depending on traffic) and there might be more cheaper stuff in Nelsons Bay...but that's about an hour from Newie. I'll have a look at the name of the caravan park in Maitland next time I drive past if you want?
ETA: Now that I think about it - there might be a caravan park in Stockton (just over the bridge from Newie - maybe a 15min? drive) I have NO idea if its a good one or a dodgy one...but will see what I can find out!

I actually stayed at Hotel Ibis a few yrs back.. it wasn't really that cheap. I think we paid around $99-$135 per night back then.
I think the Formula one might actually be one of the cheap ones i was thinking of. There were 2 different ones and they were both about $60/night. I have a vague memory of the other one.. can't for the life of me remember the name though.. I think it might have been in Charlestown and on the pacific hwy?
charlis_mum anything you can find out would be really helpful. I'm really hoping to make this move soon and need to have somewhere organised to stay.

you can find accomodation with hanbury lodge - my folks were there for a week for $470, and required the disability suite (room 5) so chances are others would be cheaper?

Certainly is.... will ask today of its quality... my besties hubby is a Stockton local!
I was also going to suggest Formula 1 too....
Will have a think about what else I know of and get back to you....

Hi!
Here's some links to Newcastle Caravan Parks
http://www1.newcastle.nsw.gov.au/stocktonbeach/
http://www.redheadbeach.com.au/
That one is 15km from Newcastle
http://www.belbay.com/
That one is in Belmont which isn't too far
Hope these help!
I've also googled motels in Newcastle
http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=motels+newcastle&meta=cr%3DcountryAU
I think Formula 1 is $69 a night

thanks for all the links.
Hanbury lodge looks promising.. $275/wk for a single room or $300 for a double. Thats the cheapest i've seen so far.. just got to hope they aren't one of those places that have a no child policy or a max of 1 child per room. Anyways i think i will contact them soon to see if its suitable and hopefully book in.
Stockton Beach tourist park looks alright too.. $300/wk provided it's an off peak period.
yay.. this move is starting to look more and more do-able:smiliedance:.

they moved in bunk beds for my bro and sis when they stayed for 2 nights in my folks suite, dont know if theres room in the other rooms, but dp thinks it was mentioned that the bunks can be moved from room to room, so maybe? Give the guy a call, he's a bit vague but really nice, just explain what you need and he will do all he can, he actually moved someone out of room 5 to get my folks in a week early(they needed a dsp room, and there were non dsp people in the room, and normal rooms available) so its very relaxed.
theres also shops less then 5min walk away, and a bbq area out the back.
if you can tho, also look at
http://serenityaccommodation.com.au/?pageId=2811
might be more suitable

Thats good to hear they let your brother and sister in. I don't need bunk beds or anything as my kids are quite young.. we would be right with a double bed.
I just remember the last time i was looking into hotels and the likes (in a different town though) a lot of them had no child policies or allowed only 1 child per room.. you could have 2 adults and 1 child but not 1 adult and 2 children.. seemed a bit stupid to me.. but anyway a bit of topic..
I had a look at the serenity bed and coffee... seems nice but a bit expensive.
I was having a look at the belmont bayview park.. i went into the booking section and chucked a few random dates in and got $280 for 7 days so if it's that much when i'm ready to go i might try and book in there as its the best price so far.
Seeing as you guys have been so helpful i might chuck another question in...just wondering what areas you would recomend to live in? Would prefer cheaper areas..for a 2 bed for $250/wk or under.

You might be hard pushed to get a 2 bed that cheap
It depends on how far from the actual city you want to live?
I live out west about half hour drive from Newcastle CBD.
If you have a car it's great as its' straight road all the way in
Thornton is a good area and the rental properties are cheaper the further out you get. The rental market in Newcastle is really tough at the mo. It's getting as bad as Sydney with god know's how many people going for one place
Medowie is also a place to consider. I wouldn't go to Raymond Terrace but that's just my opinion. Charlestown is nice. Which is only 10 mins from CBD. As is Belmont.
If you go to realestate.com.au or domain.com.au, type in Newcastle and surrounding suburbs see what you come up with
:)

I have been looking on realestate.com.au and a fair few places have come up for $250 and under. There have been a few around Charlestown. I'm a bit unsure of the area though.. seem to get a mixed response from most.. some say its really nice and others say don't go anywhere near there. I've only ever been to the shopping centre there.. never really explored the suburb or anything.
I'm not too fussed on how close i am to the city.. i have a car so getting around is no issue. Just wondering what suburbs people would recommend and those to steer clear of?

Depends what you are after.... I am in a very neat and tidy 2 bed unit right on a huge park at New Lambton for $215/wk.... absolute steal in my eyes.....
Charlestown has some good areas, and some not so fabulous, but all in all is pretty good.....
Areas I would personally stear clear of would include Gateshead, Windale, Islington, Mayfield.... they are my absolute no go zones.... of course there are good and bad spots everywhere.... if you want any specific advice always feel free to PM me if you spot somewhere but not 100 % sure.... I'm a Novocastrian born and bred and pretty familiar with the whole region....
Do you have friends and family in the area, or thinking of moving for a fresh start?
Oh and as for recommendations, I'm quite partial to the Adamstown, New Lambton, Kotara areas.... a little further out there are some nice places in and around Rankin Park, Wallsend, Cardiff, Lake Areas etc....

I would be really happy with something like that. I don't mind living in a unit. In some ways i would prefer it cause i just can't be bothered with the whole yard maintance thing.

I don't know anyone at all in the area. I'm in the process of getting out of a really sh!tty abusive relationship and just really want a fresh start away from everything. I've been to Newcaslte before and liked it there so i figure why not take a gamble and start a new life for us there.

Thanks i will keep that in mind. If all goes to plan i will be down there beginning of march or maybe very late Feb. So i will be looking for something like crazy from then on.

My sentiments exactly.... and I have the beauty of a HUGE patch of grass that starts literally underneath my balcony and is maintained by council, not me!
Good on you.... well if you want PM me when you get dates organised.... happy to catch up for coffee and show you around if that's of any help!
Two wise gals? you must live right near me!! Small world!!
Harvest moon- Good Luck with the move- make sure you post when you get settled and maybe you might like to come to a meet some day soon. xx
Two Wise Girls I'm pretty sure I know where you live now too.
Harvest Moon good luck with the move! Rentals are hard to come by atm but once uni starts back it settles down again.
I second two wise girls no go zones but I have lived in Mayfield and it wasn't so bad....depends on where about in Mayfield you go...but it's pretty obvious where's dodgy and where's ok the second you enter the street ;)
Also Maryville is not a bad suburb and close to the city centre.....it's an older suburb so rent is cheaper than the posh suburbs surrounding the city (Cooks Hill, Hamilton, Merewether etc.)
But Lambton/Kotara area has better schools. Depends on what your needs are.

That would be great! Knowing at least one person in the area should make things a little easier.
Aahhh you girls are on to me... Very small world here in Newcastle.... espec if you are a Novocastrian through and through.....
HM... Absolutely no worries at all.... It must be daunting coming to a fresh new place, but oh so exciting at the same time..... and fellow single mummy here too!

hey, i wont hear until tuesday, but might have a new house to move into!! if we get it, i might be able to put in a good word for you staying here in my old flat, its a ****box upstairs, but its just been sprayed for bugs, carpets will be cleaned and its only $190p/w (we're in new lambton too) so might do for a few weeks? i could lend you an old queen bed, but not much else in the way of furniture.
if this comes through - and its a very big if, been searching for a rental for months - we'd be hopefully leaving end of feb/early march.
anyway, please dont get hopes up, just a possibility, and i dont know what landlords would think, i just reckon it would give them more time to find the next tenant, so they might go for it?

CaitlinArai22 that would be great :). I would be happy to take over your lease or sign a new one too so the landlord might be happier about that? I don't mind living in a ****box.... have before and could do it again.
It all sounds so perfect.. cheap rent, moving at the same time as me... although i do understand things don't always go the way you want them too so i won't get my hopes up to much.

I had a look into the stockton caravan park. It was a bit expensive as i would be staying there in the "shoulder" season. So would be $360/wk. I really don't want to go over $300/wk as that leaves me with only $200/fn for all other expenses. So i'm really hoping it won't take to long to get into something more permanent.
Catching up for coffee would be great though!

I know what you mean. I was always under the impression that caravan parks were really cheap dodgy places to stay.
When you go and look into it's quite surprising just how expensive it really is.
The belmont caravan park was $280 for the week. So i am thinking that is my best bet atm.
I'm just really hoping i'm lucky to score a rental fairly quickly.
Looks like we will be leaving here on the 9th or 10th of March. I think i will try and draw the journey out a bit though.. i don't really want to do a 9 hour drive with 2 kids, by myself and on one day. I was thinking of maybe just staying in Coffs Harbour over night and doing it over 2 days or making dragging it out a bit more cause i really want to go to Byron bay one last time. Either way i better make up my mind sometime soon.
I've got so much to do and so much to get organised.. i should really get off this computer..lol

Are any of you guys still interested in meeting up sometime? Would be good to know some people in the area.
Hi HM... sorry haven't been online as much lately.... life is hectic...
Are you in Newcastle now???? How did the househunting go?

Yeah I've been here for about a week. Still have no where to live though but am working on it... hopefully it won't take too long to get somewhere.
HM pm Roopee. A bunch of women catch up every single Thurs...you'll be more than welcome to join. It's a different location every week but Roopee will be able to give you the details. I go, but only in school holidays as during terms I have other activities but the women are great!

teapotfairy i will pm you one day if i ever have somewhere to live.. although saying that after a month of being homeless it might be time to give up on newcastle i'm starting to think.
I will slug it out here a little longer though.. i actually got considered for a property the other day but the owner said no in the end then took $20 off the price and put it back on the market... go figure? It's given me some hope at least.
