I hope it is, I was started to get excited about actually getting something from the government since we missed out on the Xmas one. :o
That and I was hoping to use it on some baby stuff now that I am part time at work.
Did anyone else hear that apparently the US was going to do something similar? Or was I mistaken?
Has to be passed in the Senate first - and that could take at least another week...
Sky news says it will go to the senate to be voted on this coming Thursday and we should know by Friday if it goes ahead... I hope it does:D
DH and I have paid tax for long enough.. it is time we got something back:yelclap:

That news link didn't say it wasn't going to be passed. The verdict is not out. They will vote on it next week. So we have to wait. I really hope they approve it as this money will help a lot of people out there.
they have to pass it LOL, they dangled the carrot to get everyone excited, now they arent going to deliver???
Considering what is going on with the fires and floods at the moment i would prefer to see it all go to them in extra crisis payments.

Just wanted to add that although Rudd has put $10million towards helping those peoples, that isnt going to even touch the sides of what these people have lost and the help that they require NOW. While he is trying to push through these other payments that dont start for about another month to start with, the families that have lost everything need the money he has allocated to be put towards them, the schools, hospitals, wildlife, businesses etc that have been destroyed by the fires and floods.

I totally agree that the govt should be helping these poor people RIGHT NOW...however, though I fear I may come across selfish and cold-hearted, I NEED that money too...I would be able to be 100% out of debt with that and it means alot to me.
wow....
I completely agree, that the money should go towards the victims of the fire devastation.
We won't get any money from the Govt. but I still will donate something to the red cross appeal.
They need the money right now, towards rebuilding their life and future.

Yeah....we would get probably $4k and could sure use it....we could barely afford the petrol money to drive the kids to school last week...BUT this can't possible compare to what these people are going through :( I would not hesitate to give up the money.
I've been sitting in my home that I don't own with bills next to my computer and bank account very low, while watching the news bulletins coming through.
I said to my hubby this afternoon, just imagine if the bonuses were cut by $50 per payment to $900 - how much difference that would make - would it be $2billion that could be given to the people who don't have a roof over their heads, computers to sit at, still have the unpaid bills and low bank accounts. He said - That probably wouldn't even scratch the surface.
I then said - I truly hope these payments aren't passed through until there is more than a token arranged for the people in Victoria.
I have been crying watching the people come on the news and just watching in disbelief as the death and injured tolls continue to rise. It's absolutely flabbergasting.
I then came on here, hoping there wouldn't be threads about friends or relatives people have lost. Not because I don't want to hear about it, but because it's devasting enough that we know it's happening. I've only clicked on the new posts once so far and am amazed this is the first thread I've seen with posts about the fires.
:fingerscrossed: for all people who's lives have been devasted by these fires and I hope you get more than the pittance promised. As for the $950 payments, I truly hope these are shelved longer so the money doesn't go before these Victorian communities can be started on the road to recovery.
My debts will last another 6months till tax return time, I'll just continue to pay off the amounts I do every pay.

I agree that most of us could use it & of course how awesome we could be debt free etc .... But the reality is much bigger than that.

Fair enough.
100% out of debt would mean you'd have 0 debt.
What about being 'close' to being out of debt, wouldn't that mean just as much to you as well?
I hope this doesn't sound mean but if you're $950 in debt, you are doing just fine.
I actually applaud you for managing your finances so well.
As far as I'm concerned, using this money to pay off debts isn't exactly boosting the economy.
You would be doing your part by spending to boost.
Some people would much prefer to assist their brothers, sisters, neighbors and strangers, than boost the economy, people who have lost their homes, their loved ones, precious photographic memories, etc.
I cannot blame anyone for wanting to take the more humane approach. :hugs:
I understand that many people could do with the Bonus, that's absolutely normal.
But these people affected by the fire, have lost everything. Memories of their childhood, their kids, their own house, a place were they called home. All gone, destroyed by the fire..
I thought about how lucky I am. Sitting in my own house, on my own computer, wearing my own clothes. While my kids are asleep in their own beds, in their own rooms.
These people have nothing left but the clothes they were wearing when the fire started to take over. There was no time to go home and collect some clothes and memories. There was just enough time to save your own life.
And therefore i think this people need the money more than we all do. Even if just half of the money people get goes towards the victims, that would help enormously.
As for being dept free, yes, it would be nice but it's not urgent.
yep what they said^^.
the fires and floods have devastated individuals, families and communities.
sure i'd happilly accept a bonus, but when so many are in need in such a huge and overwhelming way, i would be much happier to know that they are being supported, they really need it right now. they have lost everything in many cases. devastating and so tragic.

god only knows how much we could use the money- with all these floods dh hasnt worked in a while and because the ground will be yuk for ages he wont be able to work.
he has put in applications everywhere- even woolworths lol and has had no luck
yes we could do with the money
but we have a roof over our heads (thanks to our very understanding landlord) and nappies and enough food for the moment
most of these ppl dont even have clothes other than the ones on their back
i wish there was a way everyone could be helped out

Do you have a house to live in? Clothes on your back? Photographs in your albums? Nappies and wipes for your little one? Food to eat? Blankets and a bed to sleep in?
I think this money should not be going to anyone but those that are in desperate need of it.
Alot of these families won't have insurance.
They NEED this money.
Hell I could do alot with that $950. As a single mum to one about to be two who is struggling to make ends meet it would really help. But these people have been left with nothing, some have lost family members. Women and families losing their husband/father. The breadwinners of their family.
I know that if this goes through I will be using my $950 to go towards those affected by this.
A car can wait, these people can't.

:iagree: with all of it, this money would help us significantly too....but I can live with debt as I have my possessions these poor people have nothing zilch nada, so look at whats around you and imagine that all gone, and how grateful you would be if people help you to get back on your feet again.
And honestly this would stimulate the economy as they are going to have to buy products and homes and put it back into Australia, the whole point of the stimulus is to spend the money not save or pay of debt otherwise it's used inappropriately and well just be in the cr@pper financially a little bit more.
I totally agree that the govt should be helping these poor people RIGHT NOW...however, though I fear I may come across selfish and cold-hearted, I NEED that money too...I would be able to be 100% out of debt with that and it means alot to me.
Ok wow:eek:...
So, your in a little debt. That payment may help you out a little.
How that could compare to losing your whole lifes possessions I have no idea.
So yes, you have come across a little selfish and cold hearted.
I was all for the payments up until this disaster happened.
Now I hope the funding is used to rebuild these communities and lives.
I dont care what anyone here says NOT one of us 'really' need it as much as the bushfire victims. I think the gov should give everycent to them. They dont even have hosue or clothes, food.

eeeek...:eek::eek:
If it goes ahaead then I will put any I get back into the bushfire fund.
I have debt but how lucky I am...debt is nice compared to no house, no clothes, no livelyhood.
I can keep plowing away at my debt. Ring companies and ease the pressure through payment plans..
Who do the bushfire victims ring to ease the pressure????
Debt Schmet...
Compassion and understanding for those who would long to just be in debt, is better.
Shira, you are a darling:hugs::hugs:.
Thanks babe. But im so deadset serious. People on here are a lowesy $950 in debt. The victims are probably over 300k debt on average. Poor poor people. I hope the gov givs them every cent they can. If I was given the $950 i would donate everycent to the organisation. I have been in a hosue fire and lost EVERYTHING. All I walked away with was 1 thong on my foot. Its terrible and they all need ou help, every dollar counts

As much as it would be great to get the money, I could get my license and finally move, I would rather the people who have nothing get it. I can continue to save for these things, what are they meant to do?
Selfishness is disgusting
I really do feel for every single one of these people. Its times like this I thank god for this wonderful country. Being able to give 10million as a rescue package. Some countries cant even supply $50 to help those in need..

:iagree::iagree: I am NOT selfish, we are housing our inlaws and several animals who's home's were destroyed in our local area.
Sure, Im not thinking about the $950 right now, but I still want it, if I am entitled to it.
We can not replace what was lost here with money, or with prayer or even with Hope. But we CAN and SHOULD help anywhere possible..
Thinking about your own family's needs is NOT selfish, your 100% right Tylers mum, there will ALWAYS be some-one/everyone, wose off than you. does not make you any less worthy :hugs: Just perhaps a less pressing "need" for "right now"
Stuff berating people, celebrate the goodness and Responsivness of people ready, willing and able to help.. Being interested in whether or not you get the payment does NOT make you less of a person.
KEEP FIGHTING VIC. Hope no more lives are lost in this tragedy. :crying:

Tylers Mum, Its normal to want to provide for your own family.
But these people NEED the money. It's a NEED to get them on the road to recovery.
A week ago nobody even knew this Payment was going to be announced.
So no-one can really say that they are relying on this to get by.
The victims of this disaterous Bushfire need our Government and the Public to dig deep.

As I said before, it's only natural to want to provide for your family. I get that you are not saying you need it more than the fire victims:).
I would be nice to think that the funds stretch so that everyone is looked after, but it is pretty unlikely.
Tam as a single parent as well i DO understand where you are coming from, it would be of a help to me too.
BUT
Ive never been one to sit there and think of what im going to do with any bonus money before it hits my account so its not something i would ever dream of putting into my budget. I look at these people over east and wish i could be of more help. Being so far away means that all i can do is offer baby stuff to be sent across to those in need that i have left and to offer up any money that i MAY be receiving from the govt that isnt included in my budget. I look around my house at what i have, a roof, clothes, food, computer, the net etc and i think hell, those people have nothing like this. They can have my money. Atleast i still have what i can see.
who knows
im not counting my chickens ( or Rudd $$) till they hatch
It's not the prime minister who is holding everything up, it's the greens and the liberals and the independants who dont want us to have the money, especially moron malcom he reckons that we dont need it.:ecomcity:

Well then lets push for it to go straight to the relief fund rebuild their lives and the economy, and don't assume what others pledge to do its such a cynical view on the world and in this instance I like to think people have their hearts in the right place.
I'm going to close this thread for now ladies. I think we all need to wait to hear from the government as to whether this money will go through or not. There is certainly no need for personal attacks.
It's no ones place to speculate on whether others will follow through with any donations they have said they'll make. If the $950 bonus happens, it's their decision to make.
I do hope the government put more money forward to help them. Our house burnt to the ground 5 years ago, so I know what its like to have nothing. But a lot of those poor people have lost family members as well.. Just terrible
No one has said they don't want money to go to those in need, and it's not selfish to think about your family. We all wish for a little extra at times
