Just wondering if anyone has used the numbing cream before immunisations & if you think it worked or not?
MJ Has to have her 12 month needles tomorrow  & never has a good time afterwards.
Should I/shouldnt I?

My 3yr old son needed a blood test so i got some of the numbing patches left them on for an hour prior then he didnt feel a thing. They are the best
Hi - they always used to use Emla (sp) cream on the bubs in A&E when they were taking blood:( and they didnt seem to feel it so it may be worth a go.

When Brooke was 2 and having grommets put in her ears, they put some of that cream on her hand befure they gave her a needle. But the surgeon made them wash it off, he said it makes the veins too hard to find.
Off topic, sorry.

Just from the chemist, no prescription required. Just ask for Emla.
The patches are less fus than the crem if you can get them.
They do work a treat, and yes, they will work for adults, too.

Well we didn't end up getting it, the chemist was sold out :crying: Not a fun day & MJs still not 100%.
I'll be getting some for sure next time though
Hi,
Emla cream is a great idea for immunisation.
I work as a phelbotomist (when I am not on maternity leave) so of topic for a moment (sorry).
Emla cream is really not recomended to use when haveing a blood test it really is great in the fact that they dont feel it but there is a 90% chance that the blood collector wont be able to get the blood as emla cream flattens the veins.
The company I work for strongly reccomends patients not to use emla for blood tests as a second attempt is generally more traumatic.
But in saying that there is also no pressure put onto the patient (or childs parent) it is always there decision.
I only mentioned this as I noticed that emla and blood tests were mentioned .
Whenever any of us see a young child come in with a patch containing emla I must admit we all cringe , sometimes it is not a problem but when you have a sick little one it can be just horrible.

Sorry Cookie but elma cream is no use in immunisations:(
Its not the actual needle but the serum that hurts the baby when its injected. Elma only works on the top layer of skin. So in fact its quite pointless. It works for bloodtaking because you arnt getting anything injected into the muscle. (but as you said cookie it flattens the veins, so it can be more distressing) So sorry guys its a waste of money for immunisations.
How do I know? I used to be a immunisation nurse in a Drs surgery. Pm me if you have anyother questions

I'm sorry 3KIDSMUM but thats just not correct:no:. I also was a nurse & now studying to be a doctor - so I have a bit of experience with immunisations too. I agree that EMLA is not recommended for blood taking - but as for its efficacy for use in immunisations I'd suggest you look for and read some studies/journal articles on the subject. studies certainly seem to tell us that it obviously reduces acute needle pain in infants. there are still many nerve endings in the skin & so numbing them DOES help! give it a go parents.
