View Full Version : Spewy, pooey, windy baby - at night
:( My 8 week old DD is awake most nights for about 2 hours. Our nights go like this: she has her witching hour from about 5pm until 10 or 11pm then crashes out. She wakes for a feed between 2 and 4 hours later, feeds whilst I doze for about an hour and then the next hour or two is spent with her straining to poo, pooing, vomiting, vomiting again, pooing again.....you get the picture. I have learnt not to change her nappy until she's done a few (it comes out in spats - hardly ever just one poo) or change her clothes on the first spew. So I sit there waiting until the explosions stop:sleeping: I think if this didn't happen, she would be a great sleeper.....she is during the day and hardly poos at all during the day. But the nappy and clothes changes, and being unwrapped due to the vomit is very unsettling and upsetting for her in the middle of the night and she ends up wide awake. She wakes again about 2.5 hours later and we go through a similar process, except it's then time for me to get up for DS:(
My DS never even pooed at night:confused:
Anyone got the same or a similar problem? When did it improve? She has been like this since birth. I am getting tired!

Harriet, hope you hadn't given up on someone replying! I have now had five babies like this and it is never easy. Essentially some babies are born with an immature gut and can't handle milk as well. Pooing and wind and straining is due to baby being unable to process amount of lactase in milk so undigested milk hits lower gut and bacteria act on it to produce gas then cycle of pain etc. poos often green and explosive. babies often try to feed frequently as sucking helps to move gas but this frequent feeding causes more problems. can also be if you have oversupply of milk. reflux is also a possibility but may just be vomiting from overfeeding. tretment really revolves around controlling feeding - would take a season to type so recommend you look at australian breastfeeding assoc website under lactose intolerance and just have a look at oversupply of milk if you think this could be an issue. they will also have sections on reflux. another great resource is a ver thin handbook called settling your baby which you can order online from child health in SA - it discusses feed play sleep routines to space feeds to 3 - 4 hrs- if not successful then happy to help further
My son who is 5 mths old had the same thing since birth till he was 3mths old - pooh every 2 hours and goes through the nappy, clothes and onto me and he looked like he was in pain. The only reason why he now has normal poohs and normal wind is I changed his formula. He now is on neocate (hypoallergenic infant formula for management of cow's milk, food and allegies) and from the first day he started to have it he has never had those runny poohs every 2 hours. Nicholas does also have reflux which didnt help, but if I was you I would see a Paediatrician. It wouldnt be a bad thing to also see a baby chiropractor who can work on her alignment, it sounds to me that she maybe outof line in her neck/back - samething happened with my son and it did help. He still goes to see a chiropractor, it all helps bub be more settle and also helps with bowels and just the way her body will be growning. I am amazed how much chiropractors can help babies. If you need more info let me know. :flowerz:

Good luck.:hugs:
Thanks everyone who replied! I am happy to report that things have improved a lot since I posted.
She has reached that magic point that babies do where they only poo once a day or so. She is now feeding once a night and pretty much going back to sleep on the boob and staying asleep until ds wakes us at about 6.30am. Thank God!
I was always pretty sure it wasn't reflux with her - she is very spewy but it doesn't seem to worry her too much. The night pooing was doing my head in though:(
I'm having these problems with my three week old. Grunting and pooing heaps at night. He's putting on loads of weight though. I wonder if I have an over supply?
