I cant call him a prem anymore but my son Joshua was born 7 weeks early at 34 weeks due to my waters breaking early due to a infection... ( while out baby shopping of all places) ... I had to have needles for a week to help his lungs.....

Joshua was born on 7th Jan 2008 he weighed 2.2kgs and I remember the horror stories the midwife told me... she said he wouldnt scream , or be able to suck or swallow.... she said he wouldnt be able to breath by him self and it was very frightening time.... well Joshua really showed them all he came out with a very loud angry scream... he sucked and swallowed straight away.... he kept body heat without needing help.... and they did a age test and it showed he was a 37 week old baby not 34.... in hospital his weight really dropped by allot and the doctor felt due to the tests showing he was more mature than they first thought they allowed him home 3 weeks after he was born.... i had him home 3 days and he put on more than 500g which shocked the doctors..

Joshua since then has been a blessing he is now normal size for his age hes 11 months old now.... he was slower at wanting to go to solids but did things earlier than expected... he said mumm ma at 3 months old, he sat up alone at 6 months, he took his first steps 3 weeks ago without holding onto things... and its been a joy watching him grow over time.... hes mummies boy I must admit and very cuddly and cheeky.....

I am also expecting my 4th child another boy I have all boys..... this ones due 25th of April anzac day ! I am hopeing this ones stays in longer but the doctor feels I may go early again as I had a letz done last year due to abnormal cells on my cervix.... I was then told I wouldnt fall pregnant for a long while as theres scaring but i found out that I conceived this one 2-3 weeks after my op on my cervix ( oops)....

Pics of Joshua from prem to now....

HI hi

My DD was a 33 weeker, born weighing 2 pound 5 ounces (1152 grams) due to IUGR from placental dysfunction from my having Pregnancy Induced Hypertension.

She was on CPAP for 2 days and had a few issues with blood sugars and platelets etc but has done really well and has no issues from her prematurity except that shes still petite.

heres her at birth

Thanks Naiwen!!

ugh this is the last time Im doing this I can tell you that for sure!!! People are already asking me when i will have another, how about letting me get this one out?? LOL and when I say were done I get the "oh,thats so sad,one more would be nice!". Nice for whom exactly? theyre not the ones that have to spend almost 10 months hoping and praying another stay in NICU wont be on the cards :p

The baby at the end makes it worth it,but yeh Two is more than enough.

Im looking forward to never having to stress over growth scans and blood pressure checks again.

Im much better at stressing about them when theyre on the outside!

Hi Everyone

My DS was born at 29 weeks 4 days and he spent 6 weeks in NICU. How scary. I never wanted to leave him.

He is now 6 and a half months (4 months corrected) and is doing well. Our only concern at the moment is middle ear blockages but they say his inner ear is fine so hopefully the most he will have to have is grommits.

Thomas has just mastered rolling and can almost sit by himself. He gets very frustrated at not being able to crawl yet though. He thinks he is 6 months going on 6 years!!

Am happy to share my NICU experiences with any new NICU mums and dads out there.

DD weighed 2lb12ozs (1240grams) She was 36.5cms long and all arms & legs. We spent 5 weeks in NICU then got put into level 2 NICU (for when the babies are getting bigger etc) and spend 1 week there then got transferred to a hospital closer to home and spend 2 weeks there and came home 2 days before christmas.

Loved the time we spent at Flinders Medical Centre (in SA) but it as almost an hours drive from home every day and sometimes i'd just go there in the middle of the night. And they were also great at the neonates unit at Lyell McEwin.

Any questions feel free to ask.

Hi everyone

I have a history of prematurity too

my last bub was born just over 35wks, but she acted like a 34wker, she was 2.4kgs born, needed safactant(sp) to help her breath, then on CPAP, then oxgen for a while till a couple of days before we brought her home, she was just shy of 4wks old when we brought her home, she was so tiny

DD is going good now, she didn't start solids till 10mths old (tried her before that but she still had the tongue thrust reflex thing going on at 9mths old), she didn't start crawling till just over 13mths old, she has eating problems which we're seeing a speachie and dietition for, they think its due to her getting pneumonia twice at 10mths and just over 12mths,

she's just over 16mths now, and is now cruising furniture a little bit, this week she has started trying to climb things, she's also got her 3rd and 4th teeth over the last 2wks, oh and she does'nt say anything, but i'm not expecting her to or anything as yet, as she's orally delayed

She had an APGAR of 8 and 10 at birth. She was in SCBU for 2 weeks before coming home. She was having 2 suck feeds the day she was born and was demanding and having all suck feeds at 4 days. Hi everyone

My boy Samuel was born @31wks weighing 2052grm spent 4 days in NICU and 4wks in SCN due to severe pre-eclempsia i was hospitalised the weekend b4 and received 2 lots of steriod injections then sent home returned Saturday afternoon with my waters broken midwife tried to stop the labour but he was determined to come that night the delivery ended in a emerg c/section. Samuel is now 4.5yr old and started prep this year hes grown into a beautiful big boy now weighing over 17kgs he is still small for his age i find it hard buying clothing especially if its a set as most of his shorts hes wearing are a 0-2 his school uniform will do him for a few years which is a good thing.

My DS #2 was born @ 37wks and DS #3 was born @ 38 weeks.

Hi.
I had DS at exactly 34 weeks due to my bicornuate uterus (we think!)
He weighed 2.1 and was 44 cm long.
He was in SCN for 6 days and was then allowed home!
I still can't believe they let him come home so soon...
He was breastfeeding really well after 4/5 days and just had trouble maintaining his temp.
He is now a very healthy, intelligent, gorgeous 4 year old! :D
We are wondeirng what will happen this time around...hoping we can get past 36 weeks.

Love reading all your stories, premmies are such special little babies! :o

isn't it funny how we've all had premmies at different gestations, yet they vary so differently on what care they needed afterwards

when my waters broke with DD, I went through the SCN to have a look, and the nurses assured me that my DD would be fine as she was just over 35wks, they said the most she will need is a little bit of oxygen at first and then would just need to grow before comming home, boy were they wrong,

there were quite a few other babies born at a less gestation than DD and most of them had no probs at all after the birth and got to go home in less time than my DD

My DD was a 34 weeker, 5lb 10oz (2.55kg), 48cms, incubator on oxygen for 7 days, nasil tube fed for 13 days, 2 days under lights. All up we were in the SCN for 14 days.
Shes amazed me and everyone whos met her, always been ahead with her growth (75th percentile) shes now 12kg and sooo tall and has met her milestones along with the other bubs her age if not before. crazy child, she just didnt wanna hang around anymore hehe

Hi Everyone

My DS2 was induced at 33 weeks due to me having Rhesus Incompatability. He weighed 2.45kgs & was 48.5 cms long. He needed a full exchange transfusion within hours of being born & spent 15 days under the lights as my prob causes severe jaundice, but we were very lucky as apart from that he was fine. He came home on day 19.

He's now 9 months old & going great. Still can't sit properly & hasn't said any words, but crawls everywhere & pulls himself up & cruises along everything.

Hi, I'm new on the BubHub.

I currently have a 6 month old baby girl who was born 6 weeks early (34 weeks gestation). She was born weighing at 2470grams and at 48cms long.

My beautiful bubby now weighs 6.3kgs and has been eating solid foods since she was 3.5 - 4 months old.

I'm now 18 weeks pregnant with our second child and have been told that I am at a high risk of giving birth early again. But we will see what happens.

Hey,

My little man Riley was born at 34w 5 days, my waters broke, no reason at all.
He was 1.99kgs born, nothing wrong with him just small, but DH and i are big people so he wasn't going to be a big boy anyway.
He was in Humidicrib to regulate his temp for 1 week and in special car nursery for 3 weeks to establish feeding because he didn't have his sucking reflex yet.

He's now 6 months old and weighs 8.16kgs and 65cm long, he loves his food and has been eating solids since 5 months.
I think he's a little behind in his milestones but because he was our first baby i don't really know what's "normal".

Hi my dd was born at 33weeks my waters broke and I got a infection, she weighd 1.850kg she didnt have oxygen but ended up with golden staph so was rather sick she also had her dads blood which wasnt all that compatable with mine which caused problems.
She was in nicu for 5days and then in scn for 14 the moved to a scn near home for 8days she ended up back in hospital 2 weeks after being hame cos she lost a fair bit of weight and couldnt control her tempture then came back on fortified ebm and formula and shes been fantastic ever since now shes 9months or 7 corrected still wont sit on her own but is starting to crawl and rocking back and forth she also (baby)talks non stop and has done since 4months.

wow, there seems to be alot of preemie moms on here. im 27 now, my son is 8.5 months. he was premature, born at 32 weeks.. he was born heavy for that age, but had premature lungs, couldn't hold a temp, had underdeveloped sucking reflexes amongst other things.. such scary times.. i must say, moms were not ment to be away from their young, because the 3 weeks he was in the hospital were the worst 3 weeks of my life! congrats to all you moms because i know how difficult it is..
he is now a big boy, healthy as can be!

I had a 35 weeker who should have been ok but wasn't. He was in NICU for 10 days and special care for 3 weeks. Even though he was 35 weeks he had no surfactant in his lungs so couldn't breathe.

He is now 16 months and very much behind all of his friends developmentally but is doing ok with height and weight.

Hi all,

I had my DS at 29 + 4 due to severe pre-eclampsia he was 1590gms.
I had been hospitalized for 2 days prior trying to get my blood pressure down to no avail, had the steroid injections to help his lungs.

He spent 3 days in the NICU with a further 5 weeks in SCBU 1 and 1 week in SCBU 2.
Only required CPAP for the 3 days and was nasal gastric fed for 5 weeks.

We also went through 2 staph infections once in each of the SCBU's and had 3 lot's of jaundice.

He came home a healthy 2000gms and although we have had a couple of set backs(pneumonia) which did require 4 days in hospital each he hasn't looked back.

We now have a robust 2 year old boy, who is healthy, happy and doesn't have a care in the world.

All the best for you and your premmie bubbas.

Hi everyone, im so glad I found this thread. My DD was born at 32 weeks, weighed 1.9kg due to PPROM probably due to me having a unicornuate uterus. Iniatially went into threatened preterm labour at 25 weeks, but managed to stop it and had steroids. DD was ventilated in NICU overnight then 4 weeks in SCN. Her actual age is 17months now, shes done most of her milestones around her corrected age which I expected, She;'s just about walking now, likes to hold my hand though still, cruises around and climbs on everything! Her speech isnt great but she's got glue ear and might need grommets. Other than that shes a very happy sociable little toddler.

Hi I had mine at 36weeks so not too early. I had preeclampsia and my BP just wouldn't come down. Kidneys started to fail and apparently this all took a couple of days. Does it normally happen that quick?? Had those very ouchy :crying: steroid injections and out she came the next day. Weighed 2130g. She's 3.5months now and weighs 5.5kg so she's caught up. Looking back on photos I didn't realise how small she was.

My youngest was born at 36 weeks. She had IUGR and my placenta was failing. She was delivered by emergancy c sect while I was on bed rest as she was in distress, (what with all her fluid gone and her oxygen supply compromised!) She weighed 4lb13oz or 2180g. Now she is a beautiful very tall 2 year old- we saw the paed yesterday and he measured her twice as he didnt' believe how tall she was- on the 100th percentile! Mind you she is still very skinny but she looks healthy and well. She is advanced for her speech and overall developmentally above her age. If we could just get her lungs working well we would be great- her asthma is terrible.

Triple how are your gorgeous babes- I hope they are doing well.:goodvibes:

Hi
I am the lucky mum of not 1 but 2 premmie boys!! First was born at 31 weeks by emergency c sectdue to internal bleeding (i had a fall shopping for toys for him!) and weighed 1800gm. Spent 5 days in NICU, with 3 on CPAP then 4 weeks in SCN, with phototherapy for a few days on and off. he is still small, only 3rd percentile for height & weight but is catching up developmentally! The 2nd boy was born at 34 +6 through emergency c sect again due to spontaneous labour and him going into distress and weghed 2200gm. He spent 2 weeks in SCN and was lucky to be home just before xmas. Our 2nd is a little buddha boy and is now on the 90th % for weight at only 8 months old, however 3rd for height!! Paed doesnt even need to see him anymore.
IF we go again, fingers crossed for a full termer!

Im mummy to Triplets born at 28+3 weeks due to spontaneous labour bought on by over population.

Both Girls were on CPAP for 5 days, James for 3 days. Started bonus feeds on day 2. J started suck feeds at 31 weeks, Aleah at 32 weeks & Tahlia at 33 weeks.

Some how Tahlia ended up sick at 31+3 weeks corrected & ended up on Nasal Cannula O2 for a week, we still dont know what she had or how she got it.

DF & I welcomed them home at 35+3 weeks, 7 weeks actual.

Hi

I gave birth two weeks ago (33 weeks) to a beautiful baby boy. He is currently in SCN and doing well, so much so, that it looks like he may be home in 2 weeks.

I was an absolute mess during the first 4 days, just in shock and quite upset/guilty about his early arrival. However two weeks in, it has been a very positive experience.

Have met some great mums in SCN and the midwives have been so amazing. They have taught me and my husband so much, that I am secretly very scared about bringing him home. It is so nice knowing that he has 24 hour care and I have 24 hour support. But it will be lovely to have him with us all the time.

Looking forward to meeting/talking with you.

i have been looking everywhere for parents with prem babies.

my bub was born at 35wks on 08-09-09 at 2.6kgs, he was in the special care nursery for 5 days his was feed formula and i tried breastfeeding him however milk didn't come in.

he was discharged on the 5th day, we did the hospital in the home 1 week and a 1/2 before they discharged him fully.

he did lost weight and went down to 2.4kgs on the 5th day, which i was concern about. so i feed him formula for the week and he gain approx 2.7kgs when they discharged him.

his last weigh in was on the 01-10-09 which he was 3.1kgs.

he is gaining weight and growing being FF and feed what breastmilk i can expressed.

just wondering if any of your bub was or is formula fed when they were born & how they are now?

my other concern is that he has colic, any advice?

My 3 are FF & have been since 14 hours old.

They dont have colic. DS has reflux due to being prem. Birth weights of 1056grams, 1124 grams & 1404 grams, at 5 months actual/1month corrected they weigh 4.3kg, 4.4kg & 5.5kg. Have never had gain problems.
