View Full Version : Diagnosed with GD today :(:(
Hi
Just got back from Diabetes Centre at Burnside. I've been diagnosed with GD and SO so SO not happy about it :crying::crying: I'm 28 weeks along and wondering if anyone has any recipes for GD to share?
Thanks!
Miza
Hi there and I am so sorry to hear about your GD.. I had GD in my first pregnancy, missed it with my second and was just tested today for this pregnancy :fingerscrossed:
Will you be seeing a specialist dietician to get some great tips and advice ?
The best eating tip I can give you is to make sure you include a low GI portion in every meal you eat...
If you google low GI foods you should come up with a great list of foods that are good for you to eat
:hugs:

Hi Miza,
Sorry about the GD diagnosis. I know it can be a bit of a shock but try not to let it upset you too much. I'm sure you'll be able to manage it quite well. My last pregnancy I had to start insulin at 14 weeks! It was a pain in the neck. And every week when I went to Clinic the dosage was increased. By the end of my pregnancy my fingers and legs were a bit sore from the three times a day needle pricks! I'm 10 weeks now and I have a hospital appointment in an hour. I'm dreading that they will test early again and the roller-coaster ride will start all over. BUT... I guess the main thing is that at the end of it all the result will be a gorgeous bub with a normal blood sugar level and an average weight. So it's worth it. Anyway.... as for recipes... I was pretty hopeless. I ate lots of salads and avoided bread. After a few weeks I realised that it didn't matter if I only ate lettuce leaves, my levels were still too high. The insulin made managing the diabetes a lot easier, if a little more inconvenient. I hope you are able to manage your levels without the need for insulin, but if not, be courageous. If I could do it, anyone can. It's really quite easy and doesn't hurt at all. Good luck and please keep us posted as to how you're going. Leanne
Hi Leanne
I'm rather frustrated now. Yesterday I went to see the Diabetes Expert and she suggested what foods to eat and avoid. I am now currently on BSL readings for a week. She told me to keep my fasting target at less than 5.5 and 2 hours after meals BSL target at less than 7.0
Last night I had a roast chicken with roasted carrots, steamed broccoli and mushroom sauce. 2 hours later, my reading was 6.7. Below 7.0 so am happy with that.
This morning before breakfast it went up to 7.0 :(:( Way higher than the target.
I had a 2-eggs omelette with tomatoes, mushrooms and cheese. 2 hours later, my reading showed 7.0.
For lunch I had a pita-wrap with lettuce and chicken breast and it shoot up to 9.4!!!
I'm devastated! Where did I go wrong?? Is it the pita? Or cheese? Can't be the mushrooms, can it?
And why was my reading went high to 7.0 before breakfast when after dinner it was 6.7? This is so frustrating :(:(

I hav e type 2 diabetes the aim is to be careful with your sugars and stay away from hi gi foods mainly carbs because they turn into sugar...The pita may look healthy but it is actually a huge carb so that is what would have brought your sugars up...Hope that helps a little
pynk - sorry to hear abt your GD :( I've to have an ultrasound at 30 weeks (in 2 weeks time) and another at 34 weeks to check bub's growth. Will update when we know for sure. Gluck handling ur BSL :)
yummimumi - oh thank you for that! So it's the pita! That's nice to hear. Will try to stay away from breads from now on.
I had a quarter of an apple as a late afternoon snack then for dinner, chicken + spinach + chillies + mushrooms stir-fry. 2 hours later my BSL read 7.3 Still over the targeted mark but at least it has gone lower *phew!*
I'm nervous to check it tomorrow morning :p

Hi Miza,
You are doing really well to be trying so hard to keep your levels down. Try to avoid bread as much as possible and anything sweet (even fruit) can push you over 7.0. I know it's frustrating. I'm not sure why your fasting level is so high but I know there is an explanation because I remember them always checking what mine was at the clinic but it was always low. I only had trouble after eating. Another good idea is to try to spread out meals into smaller snacks through the day instead of three main meals. You can test yourself after each snack to see if that's helping keep your levels down. I don't want to scare you, but be prepared for the possibility of insulin. If you're going over several times a day, they'll more than likely want you to have it. And as your pregnancy progresses, it can get harder and harder to stay under 7.0, no matter what you eat. It can be a real drag having to worry about every bite you eat. But I really hope it doesn't get to that for you.
I had my GTT today. After fasting for 10 hours last night, my first reading was 7.3!!! I said to the pathologist "That's not a very good start, is it?" She just laughed and said I had .7 to play with. At least someone thinks it's funny! This was before drinking the bottle of sweet goo! So I'm dreading the results. And I'm only 10 weeks! So it's going to be another llllllllloooooooonnnnnnnnnggggggg pregnancy.:)
Anyway, all the best, keep me posted! Leanne:flowerz:
Hi Leanne
So glad to find someone whom understands. I just broke into tears a while ago with my BSL. Really made my day *hugs* thanks :) I will try avoiding bread and so so sorry to hear you've to put up with GD so early in ur pregnancy! :( Hope it wouldn't be a tough one for you. I'm 29 weeks today and struggling so much already keeping my BSL at bay.
Okay so the next morning after my chicken + spinach dinner, my fasting level went up to 7.7!! Such horror. Especially after that dinner, the level was 7.3 :(
Then I had breakfast - 1 thin sausage + 1/4c baked beans + a mouthful of mixed vege. It went down to 6.2 *phew*
Feeling depressed and so unmotivated, I only had 2 pieces of skinless KFC chicken for lunch. Readings after 2 hours - 4.9!! yippee! but oh-so-hungry.. :(
Had a snack of 1/4 apple + 50g of yoghurt + 2 chips.
Then dinner - beansprouts + capsicum + onions + ginger + garlic + mushroom + 1/4c of soy milk. Readings after 2 hours - 6.1!!
Snack before bed - handful of chickpeas and 3/4 of a carrot.
This morning before I tested and it was 5.2
The very first time my level dropped and is of target. Couldn't more happy than that!
One thing bugs me though - I feel like I'm starving myself out. I have lost close to 2kgs since diagnosed (which is less than a week!) and surely this is not good for baby? Should I just eat normally but substitute everything with low GI food instead of changing my diet?
Sigh

Miza, you're doing great! Those levels are pretty good! But you can't starve yourself. I can see you're eating lots of veges now. I would be hungry after that dinner too. I think you need to eat more - maybe you could have more to snack on more regularly. I wish I had kept all my books so I could tell you exactly what but maybe you could have a look at some sites online to find out what the best low GI snacks are. If you graze regularly through the day it should keep your levels low and still give you enough to eat. I'll have a look too and see what I can come up with. Do you exercise much? If you like to exercise, that helps too. Personally, I find exercising about as exciting as watching grass grow:) . I have never been very good with it... but hopefully you're more motivated than me. Well, good luck for tomorrow, I'll get back to you with some info. Leanne :)
Hi Leanne
You're such an angel..I've been so depressed and sad and worried these past few days :( Been bashing myself up in my blog. It's so hard to control what I eat (especially I've such sweet tooth with this pregnancy) but it's nice to have someone lending an ear to my rambles :)
Anyway, after the good 5.2 reading before breakfast yesterday, I had:
Breakfast - 1 thin beef sausage + 1/2 red capsicum + mushrooms + 1/2 slice of white bread + 1/4c of soy milk.
BSL reading 2 hours after breakfast = 6.4 (yay!)
Mid morning snack - handful of chickpeas
Lunch - 1 packet noodles (85g uncooked) + bok choy + 1 egg stir-fry
BSL reading after 2 hours = 8.4!!! :(:(
Snack - a sip of hubby's vanilla coffee chillers at Gloria Jean's :P:P
Dinner - Calamari + coriander + parsley + tomatoes + onions salad
BSL reading = 5.3 (phew!)
However, this morning before breakfast I had a reading of 5.6 :( I know it's only .1 above the target mark but still..
Then for breakfast:
1 cajun chicken drumstick + 70g (1/4c) baked beans + 50g strawberry yoghurt
BSL reading 2 hours after = 7.1 (another .1 above the target level :()
Snack
1/4 of a carrot
Lunch:
Tomyum soup (50mls) + 1 chicken drumstick + veggies
BSL = 5.1 (yay!!)
Snack
Handful chickpeas + 1/2 kiwi fruit
Dinner:
Tuna + tomatoes + mushrooms + capsicum salad
BSL = 5.9 (yippee!!)
I wonder if anyone's experiencing this much difficulties getting carbs in as much as I do. It seems any carbs I consume seems too much (the noodles) for me. Or maybe 85g is too much?
Hehe Leanne, I'm not much of an exercise person myself! Especially in this heat *faint*!!! But I am taking advantage of today's good weather (am in Adelaide) for few minutes walk and going up and down our stairs few times. Maybe that helped my levels today.
I'll keep in mind to graze a lot. I feel like grazing within the 2 hours mark but if I let myself wait til the hours end, I'd feel better a little. Yes, any info on snacks would be great help! thanks!
