View Full Version : I feel like giving up!

MCN are giving me anxiety! Literally!
I have no idea where to start and how much to spend (or not spend)
Here are my concerns
1. Which brand? Everyone seems to like a different brand and I don't want to invest in some and then realise they aren't working for my baby!
2. I am likely to go early again and worried MCN won't be tiny enough and comfortable enough for a 1-2kg baby...
3. What happens if I get the wrong size/shape/design and have to fork out MORE money to find something to suit?
Anyway, any calming, sensible thoughts on where I should begin would be greatly appreciated!
lol. Calm down.
You sound like me 2 years ago when I was looking at cloth.
I recommend getting a bumgenius 3 pack, a green kids trial pack, and a couple of small fitteds.
If bubs is born early, they will still be at hospital, so I wouldn't worry about MCN's until they came home... and then you'd know how big they were and could organise some smaller nappies.. although personally I'd probably just use flannellette squares as they fold very trim, not as bulky as terry cotton. Or you could use a hemp or bamboo fleece/terry.. still thinner than cotton, but more absorbent.
You'll find than generally you can swap or re-sell nappies that don't work with much ease.
Most MCN's don't start to fit properly until about 4-5kgs.
I found that I used flats for the first 6 weeks, with fitteds overnight. And then from 6 weeks all the MCN's I had fitted quite well. Baby Beehinds fitted quite nicely too.
So for you. I think a good idea would be to get:
a small pack of 6 Baby Beehinds Magicall's
A 3 pack of Bum Genius one-size pockets
a trial pack of green Kids one size pockets.
A couple of Baby Behinds bamboo fitteds and some fleece/Pul covers to use at night.
OR: Darlings Downunder has some good packages with different nappies in them

For little bub I recommend some prefolds. They can go quite small.
I have some bamboo prefolds from Booroi and they're FANTASTIC.
The newborn Magic-Alls are quite small too.
I personally favour Baby BeeHinds, both the Magic-Alls and the fitteds, but they are a large fit and well.. My kids are large so that is probably why they suits us so well.
Itti Bitti's are a bit on the small side, and they are very fluffy. :cloud9:
I believe there is a place that hand-makes cloth nappies for premmies, as well as clothing that fits over cloth bottoms for premmies as well.
Perhaps try googling for prem MCN's.. or similar. :o

Mommy's Touch make AIO naps for premmies, if that would interest you.
I can go searching, if you would like? :detective:

Thanks girls! I have been on the net for over an HOUR searching and looking at packages (anxiety sky rocketing!)
NCB-I've done a bit of premmie research and I'm going to get some newborn AIO and fitted starter packs I found and go from there.
If they are too big for this baby I'll just grab some tiny prefolds and covers at the time.
I'm remaining pretty confident that this baby will be over 2kg's (postive thinking and all that!)
Hopefully I'll work it all out, so exhausting!

I can't really help with the premmie side of things but I can tell you how I decided what MCN to use.
Initially I used terry flats and covers when she was a newborn and disposables if we were going out. I found the terry flats fine on a newborn, bulky but they held everything in - wish I had known you can get bamboo flats as I would have given them a go. When she was about 3 months old I decided to order some MCN's. I got;
Itti Bitti Trial Pack - gives 2 nappies - 1 snap-in and 1 sewn in both in a medium.
Magicall Minky - medium
Cushie Tushie Couture - One Size Fits Most (OSFM)
OSFM from a WAHM
This gave me 5 nappies to try. There are so many different types out there that I just had to make a final decision! From these 5 I found the OSFM just didn't seem a good fit - they gaped around the leg & leaked. Although I had thought that these would be a better option because I wouldn't have to buy more as she got bigger, they really didn't work. I quite liked the Magicall but it takes longer to dry - am down south & warm weather not always guaranteed. The itti's worked well and I decided to go with the snap-ins as they dried the quickest and are amazingly absorbant.
Once I had decided which one I liked best I then ordered a bulk pack.
I guess my advice would be don't stress too much about it before bubs is born. Maybe get yourself some bamboo flats & covers as well as 2 or 3 small sized nappies. Then when bub is born you'll have something to start with and trial. If bub is most likely going to be prem then maybe just go with disposables while still in hospital and then when you get home and things have settled down you'll have time to try out 2 or 3 types and find what suits your baby.
Goodluck and hope you make it close to term.
Are the bamboo prefolds any good for overnight use generally (for a newborn)? Or would you really need to use a fitted+cover/AIO?

For a newborn that isn't sleeping through, they'd be perfect  I assume you feed and change a few times a night- fitteds are a bit of a 'waste' IMO when they are being changed so often. I'd move to something more absorbent when they only wake once for a feed, perhaps :)
Awesome, thanks. I think I'm over-complicating matters lol

My DD uses a bamboo prefold in thirds (folded like a booster) lain inside a standard fitted for nights.
She is almost 2 and a pretty heavy wetter but I haven't had a SINGLE leak yet.
I got some from Booroi, they are SO lovely, I now have 18 of them.. With plans to get more when bub arrives, or if they go on special before then.
Really have been a fantastic buy for me.
