View Full Version : Neocate or elecare?
Ladies, I need your advice. We have a choice of neocate or elecare. What are your experiences with these formulas? Are one better tasting that the other/better tolerated? I have an 8 month old used to breast milk.
We are triling neocate at the moment. I think I can get him to drink it over time-at the moment he drinks 2/3 breast milk to 1/3 formula and he has no problems with it but it's a long way from it being 'neat'. Thanks

Elecare is meant to be the better tasting ...
That being said both are different in terms of their base so one could suit a child better than the other.
My little guy even reacted to Elecare but is fine on the Neocate LCP & seems to be tolerating the Advanced now just as well.
It will take time sadly no matter what these formulas are notorious for their taste they are FOUL so even a formula fed baby often rejects it because they are that bad.
Just keep going with adding some bm in for the time being it will be a better change over even if not the best when bubs is obviously reacting to the bm. It will be easier for bubs to change over this way because bm is so naturally sweet.
Many try a little bit of vanilla to give it a taste but this isnt always a good idea because its best to get them to take it without anything added.

The specialist advised us to add 1/4 tsp of Golden Syrup to a 250ml bottle of Neocate...............worked a treat for my DS who wouldn't touch it initially. We did it for about 2 weeks until we didn't have to worry about it anymore

:iagree:we used a 1/4 tsp of raw sugar into each bottle.
Breastmilk is apparently very sweet (i've been told it tastes similar to condensed milk) so yeah formular is pretty nasty! lol
Check with your baby's specialist first though. Pure organic maple syrup is another option if sugar is out.

My DS started Neocate LCP on wednesday. Saw a gastro specialist and within 5 min of being there was told he is intolerant to dairy and soy. I have put up with a screaming baby for 4 and a half months! I have seen so many doctors and midwifes, I even spent 2 weeks at Torrens House and all I got was "he has silent reflux". I am happy I have an answer but angry my beautiful little boy had to go through so much pain in the mean time. Sorry, just having a winge! He is not keen on the taste and I feel he is not satisfied. When should I start solids and what should I try first? He seems quite unsettled (in a diff way than he is normally). I can see some improvement but am a bit impatient i guess. How long did it take for your babies to improve? :hair:

I can understand your anger ... It took me 6mths to get someone to listen :hugs::hugs:
Please dont consider starting solids at this stage.
The Neocate at this point is working on his gut which is suffering from the damage that will have been done from his other formula etc. It takes time so please be patient, hard I know.
Solids shouldnt be started till 6mths & with bubs issues I would be taking advice from the GI you are seeing as to whether you need to do this carefully or avoid anything in particular.
Starting now when bubs is still healing could lead to further intolerances &/ or allergies.
Hang in there things will get better !

we have dd2 on elecare and she seems to like it it is ment to be unflavoured though i havent tried it to know lol
It does take persistence and it was many many months of trying before my DS finally took his neocate and I was tearing my hair out.
Just keep offering it and offering it and everytime they take a sip you make such a big deal out of it.

Thanks Allytee - I won't start any solids without the go ahead from GI. DS is drinking it better and better each bottle :smiliedance: just wish he would sleep for more than 40min at a time  but that should get better as the Neocate starts to work. He has bad wind though, and very smelly, has anyone else noticed that? Also read about Colitis caused from the intollerance/allergy being undiagnosed for a too long? anyone know anything about this?

Awesome news !
Yep the wind & smell will be around for sometime while it all clears but also the Neocate does add that wiffy smell too !
With the colitis this will be why he is uncomfortable ( possibly along with reflux ) & also why his poo has been foul ... His bowel has been irritated so it now needs to heal & its amazing that it can do so itself once allowed to. You will find massive improvements over the next few months

I get on average 2 hours of broken sleep per night and I am expected to look after a baby who won't sleep for more than 20 min during the day without having to be resettled then might sleep another 20 min and is then impossible to resettle. He has a play but after an hour is so cranky, i have been told if i keep him up longer he will sleep longer but that has'nt worked. He seems to wake from discomfort. I now know he has the allergy/intollerance to dairy and soy and he is being treated (on Neocate LCP) for this but I still feel there is something else! I have been to torrens house i have been to the hospital twice now and the the child and youth health. Is there anywhere else i can go? I am going insane :hair:. I am ready to camp out at the hospital till someone helps me, I just can't do this anymore!!!!!!!!!!!

You arent alone :no::hugs:
If something is wrong stick to your guns & dont take no for an answer ... As I said before it took me 6mths to be listened to it was frustratingly painful for all of us !
When you say he is in discomfort do you mean that he has tummy pains so his bowel is the problem or that he may have reflux or ???
Sorry just trying to understand a little more iykwim.
There is a good chance he is suffering either or both but its hard for me to say obviously !
Has anyone looked at things closer in terms of what his bowel is doing etc ?
I would suggest really harassing his Paed until he/she listens otherwise ask for a referral to a Paediatic GI because this is their speciality ... If you get the all clear then so be it you know its an issue with sleep but its worth getting it checked especially when you feel something isnt right iykwim !
Take some more of these cause I soooo understand the 2hrs sleep etc :hugs::hugs::hugs:
