I plan on using terry flat nappies for my bub and was wondering how many I would need?

I also plan on using them as burp cloths (cutting each nappy in half so out of a pack of 12 nappies I'll end up with 24 burp cloths). How many burp cloths will I need?

I also plan on using them as wipes/washers instead of disposable wipes (cutting each nappy into 6 so out of a pack of 12 nappies I'll end up with 72). How many wipes/washers will I need?

Any help would be great! :)

I plan on using terry flat nappies for my bub and was wondering how many I would need? I tried using terry flats but they were a PITA for me so I converted to MCNs, but I had 3 dozen of them and that covered me well.

I also plan on using them as burp cloths (cutting each nappy in half so out of a pack of 12 nappies I'll end up with 24 burp cloths). How many burp cloths will I need? I would not cut them unless you are going to hem them as they fray really bad (well mine did when I cut them up for bottom cloths). 12 would be heaps!

I also plan on using them as wipes/washers instead of disposable wipes (cutting each nappy into 6 so out of a pack of 12 nappies I'll end up with 72). How many wipes/washers will I need? I have around 30 washers that I wash every 2 days, I was using the cut up terry flats but they kept fraying so I ended up buying 3 packs of 10 face washers from big w, they were around $10 a pack. If your going to buy face washers try to get the ones that have no embroidery too, they work better I have found.

I have 2 in nappies now so I have bought more face washers and I wash them and the MCNs everyday otherwise I find the job gets too big when I am so busy with both boys.

I'd say the amount of burp cloths will depend on how spewy your baby is.. I only have 5 or six which is fine for me, and I use bibs all the time.

Be careful of cheap face washers, I bought lots of them in packs of 4 of different colours from Big W which were really cheap, but they are starting to fray, will invest in some better ones when they die.

I have about 20 MCN's with extra stuffing and some covers, and I wash every second day. Mostly I use AIO's and pockets, and fitteds with covers at night

I brought some terry flats with DS.

They weren't absorbent enough and just didn't cut it for me.

I still have all of them though, I brought two 12 packs of coloured Tots Bots ones.

They are over 3 years old and while some are faded and a little funky shaped now they are fantastic to have around for any reason.

After I stopped using them as cloth nappies I used them for tea-towels, nappy-free time, when my milk comes in they're handy for holding the leaking boob, mopping up little messes, feed time..

Honestly, I'm glad I bought them because they're useful just as they are.

Probably not a good idea to cut them up though, they are ideally sized as they are, you can always fold them in half for burping. :)

I'm also going to be using mainly terry flats with a couple of fitteds/AIOs for night time and going out. How many you need will depend on how often you plan to wash. This is what my mum (who used nothing but terry flats on we 3 kids) recommended (in the days before tumble dryers): 2 dozen (minimum - as nappies) if you want to wash every 2 days - which should give you a few left over. If your child is a heavy wetter, you might either have to invest in another packet or look at boosting it.

How many terries you'd need for other purposes probably depends also on how often you want to wash (and how burpy your bub is, like flutie said). I have an extra dozen terries (which I won't be cutting) for burping as well as loads of bibs and stacks of washers I got from BigW and Target.

I have 2 dozen terries for nappies and I'm still planning to prolly wash every day (just throw a load on in the morning when I get up or before I go to bed at night) as it won't take as long to hang one day's worth of naps out on the line as it will two days' worth.. plus if I'm super tired or something, I can skip washing for a day and know I still have enough naps to keep going.

That's the basis on which I'm working, anyway :) Mother's advice and all...

I had 60... I say HAD becasue some have gone missing, some I've cut into wipes (I don't recommend it, just buy the bamboo velour and get it done :P They're just too rough on their skin, especialy if its sore! :( ) and a couple I've cut into extra boosters for either my MCNs for overnight or if we're going on a car trip for more than half an hour with my 10 month old.
To me, it just seems like I constantly change nappies with terry flats.
But 60 is enough for us to wash every secon day plus have some for bump cloths - super important when you have a reflux baby who threw up literally at least 10 times a day :barf:

I had about 30 terry flats & 20 flannel flats to start.
In the first few weeks of many changes, flannel was easier as they they were fast to dry (it was winter). I then used just the terrys for many months.

For wipes I cut up an old towel and an old flannel wrap. Didn't sew, they've not frayed too much and really they get wet, get dirty & get washed, so looks don;t matter to me.

The flannel nappies also doubled as spew rags and a few cheap hand towels from Big W were great when she went through a spewy stage at about 3-4 months.:barf:

You might also want to consider liners for the nappies. We used fleece (microfleece from Spotlight) cut into strips. You can get flushable liners as well.

We now have a range of fitted & covers and AIO but beware...it can become addictive.

Thanks for all your replies!

I'll definitely be using liners in every nappy, and also boosters at night (forgot to mention those things in my first post).

I'll also be using disposables or fitted cloth for when we go out as it'll be much easier for changing bub.

I've decided to still cut the terry nappies up for wipes/washers etc because I'll just quickly run them through a sewing machine to stop the fraying.

I think I'll be going with:
- 36 terry flats for nappies (I'll also look at flannel)
- 12 burp cloths (not cut)
- 36 washer/wipes (6 nappies cut into 6 squares)
- 24 bibs (6 nappies cut into 4)

That's only 5 packs of terry flats, for $100 - I think that's a huge saving for me!
