Hi girls,

I am pregnant and have been suffering hyperemesis. With my first pregnancy I suffered from nausea but this time it has been severe with vomiting, which has finally started to ease a little.

I take maxolon when necessary to 'take the edge off' but was admitted to emergency one evening for iv fluids, and iv maxolon when I was 7 weeks pregnant. I was also given a dose of Navoban (tropisetron) which I wasn't aware of until after it was administered. The doctor assured me it was safe and was used regularly for treatment in pregnancy and is in the same family as Zofran.

I also don't know anyone who has been given this medication for hyperemesis so would love to hear from anyone else just to reassure me as I can't stop thinking about it - which in turn is causing me stress - again something I am trying to avoid!

Thanks everyone and hope you are all coping as best you can with the dreaded ms!

Hi. Sorry to hear you are so sick during your pregnancy and terribly sorry to hear you were administered with a medication before having it discussed with you - how awful!

I consulted Wikipedia on Tropisetron and Zofran and compared the two. They are from the same "family" in that they are both 5-HT3 antagonists. Zofran was the first ever drug of this type. Without a stronger understanding of chemistry I couldn't tell you whether the two are similar drugs in a chemistry sense or simply have similar effects on the human body (like morpheine and codeine are from the same family, but codeine's effects are a lot weaker and thus more like the effects of paracetamol - a completely different drug).

Tropisetron and Zofran are said to have very few side effects. One concern was that while Zofran is listed as being used to treat the symptom of hyperemesis, Tropisetron makes no mention of it which makes me suspect it is not commonly used for this. Another concern is that Tropisetron is not available in the US which makes me wonder why.

That said, I'm a suspicious person. Perhaps book in to see your trusted GP and tell him/her of your concerns.

Despite what I've written above I don't think you should stress out over it. For starters it is bad for you and the bub, and I'm sure the medication has worn off and is out of your system by now (its effects only last 24 hours).
But if it happens again - don't let them near you until they've told you what they wish to administer and give you a chance to discuss it.

Wow, thanks for going to so much trouble, that was very kind of you.

I've since spoken to the O&G registrar at the hospital who suggested the administration, and he said it was commonly used in hospitals (usually iv) when other drugs such as maxolon aren't working.

I'm also spoken to my obstetrician who said it was absolutely fine, and as there was only one dose there is nothing to worry about.

There is also a very strict protocol with what can be administered to pregnant women, so I just have to trust that and stop stressing!

Best of luck with your TTC.

Hi, I just want to send:hugs: your way and wish you all the best as I've also suffered from severe morning sickness with both of my pregnancies and it's not very pleasant.
