We are having a birthday party for my DS soon and I am putting together 'Goody Bags' for the kids to take home. They're little noodle boxes with some stickers and a small toy (car etc) in them plus a heinz fruit bar and a pack of sultanas.

My Mother and MIL believe that kids should have fun at parties and that I'm being boring and strict. I have taken out the sultanas and put in a little bag of Tiny Teddy biscuits and a Freddo Frog in each instead - they are happy now.

The kids will have cake and other things to eat at the party - so I figured something more healthy would be better.

Are they right ? What would you prefer your child to be given ? Most of the kids are toddlers.

Ooooh! That's a toughy!!!

Personally, I'd be very pleased to see a few healthy snacks in there and think it was a lovely & responsible change of pace, but then I am certainly not opposed to the occasional goody bag full of rubbish! After all, they're not going to birthday parties every day, so it's OK as a treat.

I'd say it depends on what the parents of the kids you are inviting are like. You may have to face a bit of eye-rolling (or worse!) if you think they would see sultanas & healthy gear as overly-PC. But if they are normal, sensible people they might be OK & even pleased with the healthy stuff.

Maybe hedge your bets & put one of each in?!

I agree

If DS is given lollies I'd prefer he didn't eat, I tell him he can have them later, let him have one or two, then either put them in the cupboard and throw them out if he hasn't asked for them after a few days...or I eat them myself :o

We just had my daughters 1st birthday and I popped some colouring pencils and stickers and cheap fun sunglasses (I got them from a cheap $2 shop). Lots of other little things but I got paid out on from relatives and decided to put 4 lollies in but the kids were more excited with the sunglasses and pencils etc.

Stick to your guns, kids in our society are getting more obese and they say we should be responsible parents........I'm with you!

I was just reading and responding to your other thread and thought,
"Don't kids get to eat 'sometimes' food at parties anymore?"
Parties are special, they're great fun and something to look forward to...it would be like adults going out to a restaurant to celebrate a friend's birthday and only being able to order celery sticks and water...that's not much fun!!!
Parties aren't every day...'sometimes' food isn't either...let them have their cake and eat it too!!!:D

I'd rather DD came home with a treat bag of toys and sultanas. I think that a bit of "sometimes" food at parties is ok, but not all the food at a party should be cr@p. They're going to be having cake and a few other treats at the party already, so might as well send them home with healthy stuff and not subject the other parents to sugar-high toddlers throwing tantrums because they can't have their lollies right away.

I bought a box of 15 GloTubes for $2 at a discount store last week. They're great fun at dusk for little kids, from 2 to around 12 and small enough to pop in a goody bag.

I think half/half. The kids like a little party food, which is fine. But I also prefer a healthy balance. If they get too much junk I tend to hide it and then I usually eat it myself!!! :o
