View Full Version : GRR I was treated like a drug addict
I am so so so so mad I just went to the local pharmacy to get some more syringes for DD I prefer the luer lock to the luer slip as her tube in an IV line so the locks screw into it and I can do a slow push of her meds and know that they will not back squirt all over me, and then im left wondering how much went in and how much went everywhere KWIM
So I went in and I asked the dispencery assistant, Do you sell the Luer lock syringe, and she looked at me and said NO we dont sel anything like that, and gave me a filthy look, I then said to her wel do you sell the Luer slip ones they wil have to do until tuesday to which she replyed NO as i said we are not the type of pharmacy I then realised what her problem was ( at the point the whole shop was stairing at me as she was not disceat) I then said to her so you dont sell any syringes to administer medication she then replyed not that sort of Medication, I then said to her Look im not a junkie I need to buy syrginges to administer medication to my little girl, I usualy get them from PMH but i forgot she has a central line type tube and is on a lot of medication and doesnt take anything orally, Then she says oh yer we sell them.
the frustrating part is I have bough syringes from other pharmacys and never had to explain my self nor been treated like a druggie KWIM
And to top it off OMG they charge 1.50 per syringe which is a dam rip off
Im SO SO SO SO mad I will not ever go back to that pharmacy, I had the whole shop stairing at me, so i felt like cr@p, Once i had explained the situation I am asuming they no longer thought i was a drugie but stil was upseting KWIM
Surely people buy syringes all the time that are not junkies KWIM I have never been treated like this before

:hugs: FGS you were asking for medical syringes, not drugs!!
How very very frustrating. They have no right to treat you like that.

As an ex pharmacy assistant, I think it's disgusting that anyone have eyes rolled at them, that there is any presumption and then judgement...grrr.
That's beyond unprofessional!!! I'd be making a complaint. That's really awful! :(
Write a letter of complaint to the pharmacy management. :)
Maybe they could give some customer service training to the assistant if you make them aware of the treatment you received

 Thats absolutely ridiculous! Besides, you were asking for a specific seringe. i doubt junkies would care whether they had one vs another (that sounds bad...but i'll assume you all kwim)
:hugs: to you! i'd put in a complaint to the manager, especially if you got her name. that is horrible, horrible customer service!

ring up and complain to management..
they have no right to treat you like that at all..
:hugs::hugs: How awful
How very rude indeed!
I hope you never go back to that pharmacy.
You know what? Maybe you should go back and ask for the owner and make a big 'ole complaint about the employee. That will certainly make her think twice when she goes to judge some one else!
I have had pharmacy trouble in the past too. After I told my Dr what happened she rang up and abused the chemist for the way he treated me and the way I was spoken to.
Some people just don't think, they are so quick to judge.

IMHO there shouldn't be a difference - service is service. Or at least that's what I was taught.
That's terrible. Complain to the manager and if you're not happy with their response, complain to the Office of Health Review.

Some people hey?
Dh had to go the the farmacy to get a big bottle of Nurofen drops for DD. She had surgery so needed to have that and another sort of Panadol type syrup, both recomended by the surgen.
The lady would not hand over the bottle of syrup to dh till he had asked several times for it, then got mad and told her about DD.:banghead:
That is totally unacceptable. I know you probably just want to forget about it, but do write a letter of complaint to the pharmacy manager. They either sell the syringes or not! It shouldn't matter what you need them for, why did she say they didn't have them when they did! Syringes are used by lots of people for lots of things (they make great little water pistols for the bath by the way!). She should treat everyone with respect, not just people who she thinks are worth her respect. Very, very rude.
thanks guys glad you guys all agree that she was out of line
Im not going to complain as i realy to be honest dont have the head space to waste my time on Idiots KWIM
I just will NEVER go back there, and that wil mean them missing out on a fair bit of money, the stupid part about it is, I was also going to enquire while i was in there about getting my DDs special order scripts through them rather than getting them at the hospital as they are open really late and it would mean not carrying boxes of meds to my car whilst trying to push miki in her wheelchair out of the hospital the idea was to get them all through there if we can being that most is authority stuff, so that I could nip down at night when DD is with Dh
So they have mised out on well over 1000 dollars a month, its not a 100 that we pay as alot of it is payed by the HCC but still they would get that money KWIM, pluss the amount of sundries I purchase from pharmacy, But NO seen she was a @ss whole, I will stick to going to the hospital pharmacy where they actualy get understand KWIM
Oh grrr, this brings back memories for me.
I had a similar experience with a particular pharmacist about 6yrs ago when I first began going to their pharmacy which I wanted to go to and still do years later as its open most days and 'til late and its close to home.
I told my sister about my experience, She is a pharmacist.
I had left the pharmacy crying and with a 3yr old wondering what was wrong with Mummy...she was very distressed and I became so angry.
But before I left I asked the pharmacist serving me to write his name down for me.
My Sis encouraged me to write a letter, which I did...7 pages long...hehehe.
Then she came with me for moral support and the owner/manager read all 7 pages and then spoke to me (very appologetic).
She told me the pharmacist who had been so horrid would be made to read the letter and have staff training etc.
I felt so much better being heard and have never had a problem there since.

Aaaah yes its wonderful when these people who work in such places are so judgemental !
We have had various issues with a few pharmacies due to DP's medication which are high grade opiates ... Gotta love the looks over those
Least are Pharmacist now knows us & all the details so there isnt an issue but gees people can be down right rude ....
I would complain but can understand why you dont !

It stinks your going to have to avoid a pharmacy that would make your life easier. I'd complain & then use it as you had intended. Maybe stick it to the lady by going back there all the time & refusing to be served by her or something. Immature I know :o. But I don't think you should avoid it because of one stupid lady especially if it will be easier for you!
Hi Amy
May I ask what pharmacy it was? My brother is a pharmacist so I can ask him the right way of coping with the problem if you like, cause that just isnt right, what happens if someone else comes in asking for them for there kids and get turned away..basically it would be there fault if the kid got sick from not being able to take there medication KWIM.
As for the special scripts Im not sure what suburb you are in but I can ask if you like the pharmacy where my brother is working?
And dont worry Ive had to ask for syringes like the ones you get in Panadol bottles only to be looked at funny too..I said to them bloody hell im not asking for a syringe with a needle so dont look at me like a junkie. Its for my sons medication also

Is there a scheme like the diabetes one where you can show a card or something? Perhaps if you can get a GP to put it on a script just to ensure there are no problems. Non PBS items and even products available for purchase over the counter can be put on a script.....
I too would just refuse to go back to the store. Lots of people use syringes for other purposes and lets face it junkies usually know where to get them for free anyhow and wouldn't want to pay for one

How awful, please do let us know what Pharmacy that was so that we also won't go there.
It is not acceptable for any customer to be talked to like that, not one bit.
As if having to administer drugs to your daughter isn't bad enough, you are assumed to be a drug addict for buying the exact supplies that help her out.
Fricking awful. :hugs:

i think its disgusting behaviour that u were treated that way.
I do believe though even if u were an IV drug user u still have the right to be treated respectfully and not be put down. Everyone has the right to purchase whatever they like without judgement.
While Im not encouraging drug use I do believe that if people use 'safely' (I do understand the concept of SAFE drug use is argueable) I'd rather know that in my community diseases aren't being spread because there is no way for people to access clean syringes or be able to disposable of dirty syringes in a safe manner.
And no im not a drug addict and NO i wouldnt want my kids hanging around drug use. Im saying this all in regard to the attitude of the sales assistant and the impact her attitude could have to the detriment of the community based on an attitude of ignorance and disrespect

I so hear you. I had a medical condition that required daily injections (not diabetes). Unfortunately, the sort of attitude you encountered is not unusual. I got it at just about every pharmacy I went into. In the end I would buy my needles and syringes through an online pharmacy by the box. It was much cheaper and I didn't encounter any nasty attitudes. Some people are just so narrow minded.
