View Full Version : colicky baby
Hi,
I am a single mother with a colicky 8 week old. I am at my wits end. Fortunately I can go to my mum's house and can have a break from the crying, but it is so distressing.
Does anyone have any suggestions to cope or combat this problem? I am using Infant's Friend and that seems to settle her for 15 minutes, but then it is crying again. I also massage her, and give her soothing baths. I carry her in a sling, push her in the pram, rock her, sing to her, play music, clean. I have tried almost everything I can think of....
Any suggestions before I go mad?
Thanks,
Brooke
Oh Brooke, you poor thing!
I feel for you! and your little Layla :(
I assume you are exclusively breastfeeding? You could try to eliminate all cow's milk from your diet - it worked with our little 'screamer' :) and there is research to show that it does work with a lot of colicky/reflux babies. [The cow's milk protein goes through your milk to the bub.]
Have you seen your GP or CHN? I am sure they would be able to give you some good advice - and be able to check out what is causing Layla to be so distressed ... because it has to be SOMETHING that makes her cry all the time, doesn't it!?
Sorry I can't be of more help! Let us know how things go!
:)
Dr Sears might though??? :) Go to http://www.askdrsears.com/html/5/T051300.asp and see if there are some tips there that may help??

Brianna was colicky when she was younger. It was awful.
I did what Mimi did; I eliminated milk and milk products from my diet. It worked well. We also used some settling drops called "The Rainbow Brand - Baby Soothing Syrup". It was our lifesaver. Its a homeopathic remedy. It will help your baby bring up their wind (either in a burp or poo/fart). It worked almost instantly for Brianna. You can buy it in health food shops. It was the best one that we tried.
Is she bringing up wind after a feed?
Have you tried a little bit of cooled, boiled water in a bottle? That can work well too.
I know that you cant probably see it at the moment, but theres light at the end of the tunnel. They do get over it!
Good luck! :)

I forgot to say........ your diet plays a BIG role in colic.
Go by the rule - if it gives you wind it will give your baby wind. Things like cabbage, cauliflower garlic, onion, spices, and sometimes even bread (!) can cause your baby to have wind. Just go easy on these things!
Have just found this link to NZ Public Health document about breastfeeding and eliminating cow's milk ... http://www.cpublichealth.co.nz/files/NUT0079.pdf
Might be of some help to you, Brooke.
How are things?

hiya!
I would highly recommend doing to your GP or paediatrician - we thought Tayla had colic too and it was driving us around the bend as nothing we used seemed to really work. It turned out she actually had reflux and once she was started on medication she was wonderful!
We did find though that the Brauer Colic Mix lessened her screams !
I used to think what a load of crap when others would tell me that it does get better and will stop but it is true and it will happen !
:D
My son was very colicy
all i can say is Brauer Colic relief "I love you"
and its all natural so thats a plus....
and definantly watch your own diet....
and....... it passes so just hang in there :)

I have twin boys aged 9 weeks and one is very windy/colicy I have tried a few products. My little one would not sleep for a length of time and would wake every 15min's screaming. I was told that it was eother colic or silent reflux. But i found out (by myself) that it wind was his problem.
Brauers = No good For him that is might be different for your baby.
Infacol = Love it but to expensive for the amount and not on the shelves at the momment.
Marina Infant Mixture = Brings out the wind from both ends *LOL* might be able to buy it at local chemist or if not try online @ www.morzone.com.au
There is also a few tips on bringing up wind on their fact sheet too. Oh and its a natural product too.. :)
Good luck & feel free to PM me i am going through the same drama's :o
Hey Brooke,
we have had similar troubles with Maya. we think she may have evening colic from the info we have read and have tried everything like you too....
something we found that helps alot is the Brauer colic relief and like samsmum said it is totally natural and homeopathic which made me feel ok about giving it to her.
i think they say colic is usually over by 3 months max and it is a long time when you are sleep deprived and have a screaming baby but it helps to know there is an end!!
thoughts are with you Brooke!! xxx

I actually eliminated ALL dairy for 1 month, there was a huge improvement in 2 days. Also I put a pillow under the matress at each end causing the sleeping position to be a v shape - this suposedly is comfortable for thier digestion, it def helped.

How do you eliminate all dairy products from a new babies diet???
:D :D
Hi Jen & Daz
We mean to eliminate it from the mum's diet and then the dairy proteins [that go through her breastmilk to the baby] are eliminated from the diet. :D
This has been shown both in research conditions and anecdotally [from mums reporting it] to improve somewhere between 40 -50% of babies with reflux/colic symptoms - and when dairy is re-introduced the symptoms usually return.
If a baby is being formula fed then this can't apply because, unless they state otherwise [i.e. soy or goat milk ones] they are made from cow's milk so they contain the CM protein anyway ...
Hope this makes things a bit clearer!! :)
Thanks for all the help everyone!
I have tried all sorts of things and it seems that just feeding her more seems to work. I think she may have reflux. She vomits all the time and hasn't been putting on enough weight. Re-weighing tomorrow to see if she has progressed (have been also comp feeding). Fingers crossed.
Anyway, I wish all colick sufferers the best of luck. It is horrible!
Love Brooke and LAyla
Hi Brooke
One thing that may help which so far is working for me.....make sure you feed bub on one breast and drain it before offering the other. Apparently the hindmilk really helps settle the stomach for bubs and also means that bub won't get hungry again too soon. Apparently over-feeding and not digesting the previous meal is a huge contributor.
Good luck - its so awful isn't it.
Hi,
sorry to hear that your little one might have reflux, syptoms that stood out with my little girl were that she arched her back, pushed her feet down, & was unsettled(screaming in pain)10mins after feed both on breast milk and formular & as she got older it was 15min then 20min you could set your watch to it. if that is the case take her to the doc, if you aren't happy with what they say go somewhere else, i went to 7 different health nurses, 3 docs & 2 day stays at a clinic. if they haven't ever seen it they have no idea and neither does anyone else who hasn't looked after a baby wit it. use your mummy instinct because you are probly right good luck.
