Its been really hot somedays in recent weeks and thought it might be a good idea of sharing tips on what people do instead of pushing the aircondition button on at home when it is hot.

We close all the blinds but leave the windows open in the direction the sun is facing. We also plant decidious trees on the side of the house that gets hot in summer (so we use the sun to warm the rooms in winter but not summer)

Leave all the curtians closed all day, and open windows to let the cooler morning breeze in, close them when it heats up as it just lets hot air in, use a fan to circulate a bit of air. Still gets stupidly hot by the evening though, basically we just grin and bare it.

Declare an 'undies day' where every one walks around in there undies (although, I wear a tank top, too) and sits in the wading pool to cool off.

Blinds stay closed here all day.
Back of house open in the morning to let cool air in and closed in the arvo to keep the heat out.
Bath half to 1/4 full and we jump in there to cool off (no wading pool).
Home-made ice-blocks and lots of ice-cold water to drink.
But ATM, i have to admit the a/c just comes on.....the hotter i get the more i puke and swell up like a balloon feeling uncomfy and then the more i puke again. Bring on winter ATM I say! It's MUCH cheaper/easier to throw on a jumper and have a hot cuppa!

We have a pergola with a huge leafy vine on it running the length of the living room and it seems so effective towards keeping that room cool... am considering extending it up the whole side of the house so the bedrooms benefit too.

Also have ceiling fans.

Well we don't exactly have a choice here, we live in a rental and can't afford it. But even if we could I don't know if I would get it, because of the electricity costs.

Oh yes undies day is often declared by me also..

we don't have aircon, so I either sit around nudie or with a wet/damp sarong on, in front of the fan :D
Constantly re-wetting my sarong and face and hair works very well.

When I was little me and my big brother used to wet out t shirts and put them in the freezer, and rotate.. haha.. or put wet towels in the freezer and lye on them on the tiles under the ceiling fan.

I wish I could sleep in a kiddy pool atm last night was so hot I couldnt sleep until after 3.. Or I could get aircon I spose..

We live in Darwin and some days the aircon is just a must (actually when preggers the ac was my lifesaver) but Just wanted to add that we set our ac to 26 degrees and it is perfect for us it is cooler than it sounds and is very ecnomical in terms of the cost of electricity etc. (they say 24 is the coolest your really need AC anyway) but keep in mind that when the heat gets the best of you that 26 is lovely- better than the 35 outside anyway.
Sorry to :ecomcity: just thought I'd share!
