Hi
When I was pregnant i was told I had to get my wisdom teeth out after I had the baby. Well dd is almost 8mth's and I still haven't gone back to the dentist, as I had no trouble with pain or anything. Now my the area where my wisdom teeth are coming through are starting to hurt heaps, so I'm going to have to go to the dentist.
So my question is what happens? How much does it cost? (I'm pretty broke at the moment)
Also do anyone know if dentist will let you pay them off.
Any help with this would be great as Ive never had anything done at the dentist before other than a check up.

If you are near a cap city you may qualify to go the the dental hospital and get free treatment if you have a healthcare card. I got my wisdom teeth out (two at a time) about 10 years ago and it cost me upwards of $500 each time. Also if you are preggers I think you can only have a local not hypnobel or general. I am sure that a denist would agree to a pay off plan.

My hubby needs his all out but we've been putting it off, just can't afford it. We have a healthcare card...how can we do it in the hospital?

I was in the same situation as you - I've just recently (late Feb) had mine out.
DD was 8 months old when I had mine out, was still breastfed and because I'd had a bad experience with a general anasthetic when DD was 3 months old, I decided to have mine out under a local in the chair.
I got a referral to an oral surgeon, who I had an inital consult with - he told me my options and about the procedure etc. About a month later, I had my appointment to have them out. Took 40 minutes in the chair, and, I gotta tell you was one of the most traumatic things I have ever been through, it was awful! :(
It cost me $1080 in total for the initial consult, the removal, and then I had to pay for pain meds on top of that. I also developed an infection a couple of days later so had to pay for a doctors visit, antibiotics and more pain meds.
Down time was about 2 weeks all told - I was told I'd be out of commission for about 1 week, but I think because of the infection, i had it worse. I couldn't even go out in public for the first 9 days, because my face swelled to three times its normal proportion.
If you can, I would definately advise to get them out under a general anasthetic.

Hi,
I had my wisdom teeth out, the most recent 2 weeks ago, I did them one at a time, in the dentist chair, no general anesthetic and absolutly no problem, I was counting from the time he started till it was out and it took 20 seconds!! i didnt even believe it was out so he had to show me the tooth! and I was eating dinner that night.
From what Ive heard, everyone I know who has had them all out under anesthetic and in hospital has had trouble, but I do think it depends on the individual, but i would definatly recomend one or two at a time at the dentist, plus the recovery is so much quicker, and honestly I would say its pain free.
If you have a medicare card and a health care card then you are entitled to free dental. This is where I got my wisdom teeth out so it didnt cost me.
1800450046 is the number to call and you will be contected to your local area. There is a bit of a waiting list in most areas, but its generally worth it especially if there not causing you too much trouble.
Im not sure if this number is only for NSW though, but if its not im sure there would be one for other states.
Good luck with it!

Hi everyone, Thanks for all the replies so far. Just wanted to add that I need all four out. Also I live in Tasmania and we don't have that hospital you were talking about. We do have a thing were its under a health care card thing but you end up being on the list for like a year. Don't know if I can wait that long.
If anyone has any more info, or storys/costs please add.
Best thing to do straight away is get covered for extras on private health. I'm with MBF and pay only $25 per mth for my entire family! You'll want to dble check your plan as to what you're covered for/waiting periods. SInce you already know you need it done you'll have to wait, but if you hadn't known and then joined you could get them done almost immediately! If you're not covered the cost can be $1000+ but definitely recommend health cover. As I said, we pay $25/mth and see a chiro each month and claim $90 back! Add on to that my DH's glasses x 2 every 2 years, and me to the dentist twice a year - bargain! Must be a lot of people out there not claiming to make it worth their while to cover my family!
Also recommend oral and maxilofacial surgeon if poss. and I went under general and had NO swelling at all!.
Best of luck.

It depends, if your teeth are growing in normal a general dentist can do it and average cost is $80-100 for two teeth so $200 for four.
If however your teeth are impacted like mine were you need a speacialist to get them out it will cost more I payed $800 for two.
And I agree it was actually worse than giving birth.....well not quite lol but close!
If you have a health card you need to contact your dental hospital in your city and go on there waiting list, look it up in the yellow pages.
:fingerscrossed: coz it is painful but worth getting them out!

How do you know if they are impacted. My dentist never said. All four of my teeth are coming through the gum.

The dentist should have taken an X-ray and that will show if they are coming through normal or on the bone.
And the dentist should have quoted how much it would cost too. I would ring around and see how much different dentist are charging and ask about a payment plan (embarrassing I know) but alot of dentists do that these days so its worth askinmg about.
Hope they are not impacted :fingerscrossed:

He did take x-rays and he said that there just isnt enough room for them. He did not mention a cost. I think Ill have to go to a different dentist. Thanks for your help though nemosmum. Just wish I had a healthcare card. I dont see why dentists arent covered with medicare. Its stupid.
