Hi,
As the title says, what age did you stop wrapping or swaddling your baby?
My dilemma - I am wanting to stop as it is just too hot for DD2 in this weather and she wakes up too hot and cranky (even with aircon on, the thinnest wrap and just a singlet/nappy), but without the wrap she still wakes herself up constantly with her startle reflex and I have to constantly resettle :hair:
Any feedback/suggestions would be great!
Thanks :)
I stopped swaddling DD at only a few weeks old, as she didn't seem to need it any longer.
I was surprised when a visiting nurse who had just moved to Aus from UK, told me that in the UK they don't swaddle at all. She had to be taught how to do this on arrival in Aus. I would have thought they would need it more in UK??? This was also confirmed by another visiting nurse of english background.
Have you got a fan on her while she sleeps , to keep her cool? Latest studies show this is a big factor in preventing SIDS also.
Good luck!

My first son hated to be swaddled and I always said I wished I had a baby that liked to be swaddled as they look so cute and cozy. Man did that bite me in the bum. DS2 loved being swaddled and only just got him out of it at 8 months. I went cold turkey and just got rid of them. It was way easier then I expected, but he did become a tummy sleeper after that. Since that day he's slept through every night for the first time in his life :)

hi, the swaddling is really only so they feel secure and that they dont startle themselves and wake up. I would think it is good only for the first couple of weeks, maybe up to two months of age. But it depends on the baby, some love it and want to wrapped for all sleeping times. The light muslin wraps should not be too hot for our summer. It is a trail and error sort of thing, some babies enjoy it some dont want to be wrapped at all. I cant remember if I ever wrapped any of my babies. I had sleeping bags, and rugs, but I dont think I ever swaddled anyone.
My DD hated being swaddled so I gave up after a month! I found that if she was tired enough when I put her down she wouldn't kick the blankets off so I would just tuck her in nice and tight. If your bub doesn't fidget and kick the blankets you could try tightly tucking a think cotton sheet or muslin square over her so she still has enough pressure to stop her from startling and waking herself, but she would still get air flow around her with the sheet.
How old is DD2?

We wrapped DS until he was probably 8 months or so. He just wouldn't settle properly without it.
DD1 we stopped when we moved her to sleeping bags around 5 months.
DD2 is still a bit startley at 3 months, but she does prefer to sleep with her arms out so we've just swapped her to sleeping bags too.
If your DD is still waking herself up though, I'd try to find the lightest thing you can find to wrap her in while it's hot. And even then you might find you can just wrap around her arms and tuck it under her, rather than wrapping arms, legs and everything.

We wrapped our DD until she was nearly 13 months :o
She absolutely loved being wrapped (the tighter the better) and wouldn't settle if she wasn't. She would sleep all night with the wrap - so I didn't see a great need to rush her out of it. For her, it was a really great sleep que - she knew it was time for sleep when she was wrapped.
And she is still a great sleeper now :yelclap:
