View Full Version : Cold Sore help... please
First of all, mods please move if i have put this in the wrong section.
Secondly, i have woken up this morning with a cold sore on my lip :hissy:.
I have only ever had one before and i was 20wks pg, and now this one and im 38wks pg.
I've spoken to my middie and she has said i can use zovirax (im using chemists branded one) or similar, but not heaps of it, cos i am so late in pg bubs is pretty much fully developed it's safe than in early pg.
But im wondering if there is anything else i can do to help it disappear quicker???
Should i avoid certain foods?? obviously i havent kissed DP and have always washed hands thoroughly after applying cream/touching it etc, but is there anything i can do cos its driving me crazy! :hair:

I had a cold sore when i was 8 months pregnant (first one ever..strange!) and the chemist told me not to use Zovirax
I use Carmex Ointment. It heals them faster, and numbs them to take away the itch and it doesn't make the scab look all gross.
You can get it from the chemist. I found it healed up in 3 days :)
Normally you get cold sores because your stressed, lacking something in your diet or tired. Sometimes you can get them when your badly sunburnt. Try upping your Vitamin C (not tablets though) like fruits and veggies..and getting lots of rest.
HTH :)
Zovirax is the best really.. avoid chocolate and direct sun.
Obviously no smoochy smoochy :p
The other thing I do (which people may frown upon but it works for me and I get an awful lot of coldsores) is vodka straight on the sore.. it helps to dry it out :o
(no swigging allowed though :p hehe)
its so hard cos ive also rung the national prescription phone number and they said it was ok to use, but only really late in pg.
But i have heard not to use it... everyone is different i guess. I dont like even taking panadol during pg but i cant stand this cold sore, its so annoying.
I might see if i can find the stuff u suggested at the chemist on the way home, might use both, cos im not using the amcal branded zovirax as much as it says to cos i dont want to muck around with bubs etc.
i just feel kind of "festy" cos it is a strand of herpes, so i feel dirty, but i know its just from my body being run down and immune system getting over a chest infection etc, but ppl on the bus dont think that way! lol

My mum used to suffer terribley - then started taking L-Lysine at the sign of a tingle.
You'd have to check if it's safe during pregnancy
I have found the best thing for cold-sores - i will never get one again! But not sure if you can use it during pregnancy - I'm trying to think if I did in my last pregnancy - have a feeling I did.
Anyway, it's called Famvir and it prescription only. It stops the coldsore in it's tracks even after the tingle. Although if its in that open wound kind of stage then it's probably not worth it. I would see your dr. You get prescribed 3 tablets and they're around $28 but soooooooooo worth it if you can take it. If you can't, keep it in mind if you get a coldsore after baby.
I used to get coldsores at least 3 times a year, now when I feel the tingle or even get the blister, I just pop down to the chemist with my repeat script and whatever was there is gone by the next day.
L-Lysine is ok during pregnancy. Here is a thread i posted last year about my new discovery drug....

I was told it was 'not advisable' when pregnant. I believe it may be a class B.
My chemist said if the coldsore is already there zivirex wont do much. Its most useful before it blisters and forms.
I was given a little yellow tub called blistex, it is at most chemist (even some supermarkets) and just used like a lip gloss.
Also a bit of Ice is a good natural remedy to keep it down.

But i have heard not to use it...
Zovirax has only recently been placed on the ok list during pregnancy.. basically if you were to get genital herpes they would pump you full of the stuff ( those basic ingredients) so using it topically and such a small amount is definately safe !

L-Lysine is ok during pregnancy.
L-Lysine is NOT safe during pregnancy.. you are NOT to take it... trust me.. I made this mistake this pregnancy and had a very long wait to see that baby had developed ok at the 20 week scan :(
Otherwise L-Lysine is great, I take it daily as a preventative and never have a coldsore when taking it.

Tea tree oil and blistex
( I think tt oil is okay during preg...please correct if wrong peoples)
Good to wear Blistex all the time as it is a sunscreen.
If I eat lots of nuts (various) I tend to get one, If I stress, If I am in direct sunlight, or run down.
Damn horrible things
