How do I go back to work?

I've got two boys, 2 and 9 months and I want to go back to work 2 or 3 days a week. But I don't know how to logistically do it!!!

Do I find a job first or get them into daycare first? How does it all pan out?

If I put them in daycare first, how do I know what days to put them in if I don't know what days my job will be yet? If I get a job first, I may not be able to get both of them into the same daycare before the job starts!!

Have a chat with the local daycare centres first... see what their availability is like and let them know your intending on returning to part time work. That why you can know what days you may be able to work, and look for a job that can accomodate that.

Theres not really any point looking for work if there aren't any places available in your area.

thanks. I spoke to a day care centre before actually and she said the same thing. Get the kids in first and then find a job to accommodate the days and if not, then maybe the daycare can change the days depending on their vacancies.

I've been telling the daycare centres Monday to Wednesday at this stage as that seems to be the most popular part-time days.

That sounds good.
What type of work are you looking at doing? With the cost of daycare, especially for two little ones, it may actually put you in a worse financial situation... so you need to keep that in mind.

Absolutely, I've come back to work part time with my same boss, and while I'm not worse off, I'm certainly no better off than I was as a stay at home mum. If finances are an issue, then really sit down and work it all out before you make a decision. I came back to work because I needed adult stimulation that wasn't always related to kids so the finance thing didn't worry me too much. It's worth checking out thoroughly though.

Its a tricky question, but I'd probably find the childcare positions first, as that way even if you need to alter your childcare days when you find a job, atleast you have them in and may be higher up the waiting list when it comes to requests for childcare spots. I know this was the case with our childcare centre. When I requested a change of day, we got it faster than if I didn't already have her enrolled in the centre, iykwim.
