View Full Version : Speech And Language Disorder
Hi there
I've been communicating with a lot of mum's with kids with verbal dyspraxia, but have yet to find a mum (or a dad) with a child with a speech and language disorder which is not associated with aspergers or autism. My little boy has a receptive and processing disorder which makes it really hard for him to understand what's coming in and get what he wants out. He is now 5.5 and doing really well, but still at the "age" of a 3.5 year old. He had his tantrums every once in a while... but is pretty good... he's loving, smart and good at sport, but his life will always be a struggle.
ANY ONE ELSE OUT THERE?? What about adults who have this disorder???

Hi Maghan,
I'm a Speech Pathologist who works with young children with speech and language disorders, and it is very common for these to be unrelated to other disorders. Where I work though it is fairly common for these difficulties to be unidentified until children reach school age though.
If you have any questions about it please feel free to message me.
Hi LitVoiceSP. Thanks for responding. There's a few others of us on BH who have similar struggles with the different speech disorders.
You know what I really want to know is, do these kids ever get into mainstream life, or will it always be hard??? I know no-one can crystal ball, but I'd like a little insight into what may lay ahead.

Maghan, it is difficult to say whether your child will ever adapt completely to mainstream education and communication, however I have seen many children who do. The earlier it's picked up and some intervention is put in place, the easier it will be for your child to develop skills. There may always be some level of difficulty particularly with developing literacy skills, but something can always be done to help. What I would strongly suggest is that if you don't feel your child is getting enough support at school to help his learning, push it with everyone you can. Go to your local MP or to the media if needs be. The government will try to get away with giving as little support as possible to these children, and it's only when parents push that they do something about it. There is never enough support for these children in school as far as I'm concerned. If you ever want to know anything just let me know and I'd be happy to help.
Hi Maghan, my DD has Down syndrome and along with it comes speech delay. We also use sign language as well. Just thought I'd let you know your not the only one, and many many children with various disabilities have speech delay. I know how hard it is, and it does seem like there is no light at the end of the tunnel some days, but you must stay positive. It will only get better. He is still young. I don't know much about your son's particular disability but all I know is with perserverence, loads of patience and your love, he will get there. I know that my little girl will probably never talk like you and I but she will be able to speak very well.
:hugs: to you and your 'clan'.
