Warning - I started out this thread with the anticipation of asking for some advice or guidance and it's ended in a bit of a rant but I would still like some advice if you have any...

I noticed today that the children's seat in the supermarket trolley has a weight limit of 18kg. James is over 17kg now (he's 19 months) so I'm wondering what I'm going to do in a few months when he's too big for the toddler chair. :( There is no way I could let him walk in the supermarket now, it would just end in tears and a trail of destruction.

He grew too big for the trolley bassinets before he could sit confidently so I bought a trolley mate and used to wedge him in.

It seems that high chairs don't have to have weight limits on them so I have no idea if James is 'too heavy' for his chair. I contacted Ikea and the only thing they told me was that it was 'suitable up to 3 years' which is useless as he weighs more than the 'average' 3 year old does and has done for months.

I can't get boy shorts for him because to fit around the waist he'd be walking on the knees. :hair:

I get so annoyed at people parking 10cm from the passenger side of my car so I have to squeeze a 17+kg toddler into the car (3 door hatch) whilst trying not to bump the next car wtih my car door.

James is over the weight restriction of the portacot and DF has just told me that the weight restriction of the car seats is 18kg.

I have no idea what/if there is a weight restriction on his cot. Although he ends up in our bed ever night he is no where ready for a big person's bed yet.

This is giving me the poops now.

Anyone heard of a 'plus sized' baby shops or have any advice?

I would put my DS in the trolley if he weighed more then 18 kg.. probs no more then 20 but yeah. im sure they can hold a little extra weight

If you dont trust him take a spare jacket and put it in the big part of the trolley and make him sit

Just put him up a couple of sizez if need be.. if they are to long alter them or just roll them up

Dont worry too much it wont be long before he wont want to sit in the toddler seat of the trolley anyhow.... The maxi rider goes up to about 30 kg from memory though and well maybe you can start the training of putting him at the dining table with a booster chair?

No answers or suggestions for your other issues though just :hugs: If you think its a concern you could always mention it to the GP, health nurse or paed depending on who you see next and see what they recommend....

KNow how you feel..my DD1 was always big for her age...height and weight...and we had issues with that. As for supermarket trolley, if you are not happy to put him i there...put him in the main part, but I put DD1 in the seat untll her legs didn't fit in, not by weight.

Car seat, I put her into a booster, cause she was really tall, but investigate other carseats??

Clothes.....still really annoying....she will just start grade 1 and she is size 12-14...where am I going to get uniforms in the future??????

Good luck!!!

Maxi-Riders go to about 27kg, they are a good, big seat. I like it that they can later be used as an anchored-in booster with and H harness.

As for the trolley dilemma... :hugs: no idea there, Bec! Other than as doing the grocery shopping at night or on the weekend when you DH can either help or watch J for you. Or, if he'll co-operate, sit in the big bit of the trolley.

Is his cot from Ikea too? Ours is, it's a cot/toddler bed convertible. I don't know what the official weight rating is, but both DH and I have fallen asleep in it before trying to convince the occupant at the time to go to sleep... so I know it's ok for at least 75kg! :o:laughing:

Yep go a Maxi Rider ... We had to have Boof in this as of around this age he wasnt quite your little guys weight but he was the length of most 3yr olds iykwim ! Plus I was pg so it did work out well iykwim !

The cot Im unsure about ( whats the brand ? ) but if it converts to a toddler bed you shouldnt have an issue with it because they are usually done so they have a greater weight limit. Luckily we had an IKEA one that we knew could hold him for a while !

As for clothes have you got a sewing machine ? Its really easy to whip stuff up if you do & being custom made they will fit ! Because Boof has the tiny waist but is so tall we have issues that way & now G is odd too because of his issues so making stuff is so much better .... Plus I can get some great fabrics !

Hearing ya on the highchair ! We just went & got one of those travel booster seats ( $30 from Big W ) that attach to your chairs & because its all fabricy stuff you dont have to worry about weight limit stuff ! Has worked well as G refused to use the highchair a few months ago as he wanted to sit at the little table & chairs with Boof so the booster seat is attached to the little chair !

Again I am hearing you on the trolley thing again not all just for weight but for length !!! We dont have a car so it meant just keeping Boof is his stroller then doing things that way then if I was using a trolley I would make him sit in the big section .... Oh the fights I have had on here about that :sleeping:

You arent alone :hugs:

Its gotten easier with Boof getting older because they are easier to handle iykwim .... Just be warned about the comments on not having your 5 or 6yr old TT

I dont know if Highcairs have a weight limit but i do know they can hold a lot of weight, was at a friends house and we ran out of chairs and my friend a grown man (around 70-80kg) took the tray off and sat in the highchair for about 30min, it held him fine. so im sure your little one will be fine in it for a while longer.

As everyone else has said - use the main bit of the trolley. My ds is struggling to fit in the toddler seat now and he's only 14kg (but he's tall).

Try and find pants with drawstring or adjustible elastic waists. Cotton on Kids and pumpkin patch are good for this.

The cot should be fine for a while yet.

As for highchairs, just had a look at the babiesgalore website and the Jolly brand wooden highchairs which start at $99 are suitable either til the age of 12 or an adult (they convert to seats) - so they might be a go! I also found out that my highchair is only rated to 15kg and my ds is 14kg!

And for car seats - I agree with the maxi rider!

Thanks for the replies :o
I was having a bit of tanty last night.

I do sew but I just don't have the time to make his pants. As he's got such a big tummy I figure that elastic waists are much more comfy for him so he only ever wears elastic waists and I've ended up buying girl shorts for him (size 4!). You can't tell when you team it up with a boy shirt. ;)

Looks like we will be getting new car seats and a booster chair. He's resisting getting into his high chair these days anyway so that might work well.

I don't know the brand of the cot, I know it's well known but we bought it second hand and I can't remeber the brand. I don't think it converts to a toddler bed.

I tried putting him in the main area of the trolley one day but he wasn't having it. (Silly trolleys are spotlight not having toddler seats. )

Thanks again. Every so often I have little panics about his size or tanties like I did last night. :o Stay tuned for another one in a couple of months. :p

trolleys are made from steel, although there is a weight limit, its probably fine.

Oh wow, DD is bigger than the average 3.5 year old and it about 19kg... I would have been tearing my hair out had she been this size at 19 months!

DD started to complain about her highchair around about the same age as your son. So she got her own little table and chairs at which she'd eat her meals (and draw, and play play-doh and stuff). The only annoying part is that they can get up and move around themselves... but the same can be said for sitting at a regular dining table.

A lot of those dining chair booster seats have weight-limits of around 16kg, which is a pain. Perhaps getting one of those car SEAT ONLY (no back) boosters is a good option though, as their weight limits are a lot higher, and it will boost your son up a bit. Don't use it in the car though.

He'll need to move out of his carseat and into a booster... obviously a pain. I considered getting a maxi rider for DD, but decided against it, as the only reason I would have got one was for hte 5-point-harness feature, but it's only to be used until around 18kg anyway... in which case, it works in the same way as every other booster seat with an anchor and an attachment to add a H-harness... so I saved myself a bit of a money, and got one that does just those things, for $150 (it was $100 off though, mind you). You can pick up a H-harness from about $50-80ish, depending on the brand.

Do you use a stroller? A lot of those have weight limits of around 18kg (or often less) too. I still use mine though, and I also still use the trolley seat. Have not had a problem there.

i think half the time its fine to put him in the seat, as a PP said it is made of steal, its not like it will break. especially if you have ehavy stuff in the trolley it wont fall over or anything, my mum used to put me in there till my legs didnt fit (about grade 2) i was skinny.

To be honest when I get fed up with Brion I pop him in the trolley seat (he's 3.5 and weighs 23kgs) He hasn't broken one yet!

DS walks.. He turns three next week.

Either he walks, or he sits in the cargo part of the trolley. :o

He just doesn't fit otherwise.

My DS is a big boy too, and I just read the back of our high chair that says the weight limit is 15kg. We've got a plastic fisher price travel booster thing that attaches to the regular dining chair and has trays and everything. So we'll be using that soon.

I'd get a maxirider type car seat as they go up to about 26ish kg, we need to get ds into one of them cause he is too tall for the convertible seat we've got now.

As for the trolley, I'd just keep putting him in there as long as he's comfy. I saw a girl of about 4 in the baby capsule bit of a trolley the other day  She didn't look very comfy at all!

i must say working on a checkout you do see alot of older children in baby capsules and in seats:laughing:, saw a 6 or 7 year old girl in the seat the other day, she fit though, also see alot of older kids standing on the edges while the mum pushes? i know its not 100% safe i suppose but would your child do this if they wont sit in the trolley, some kids seem to think its a fun ride.
