Just wanted to hear from others with children who fear monsters at bedtime or during the night & what they are doing to overcome these feelings.

We told DD1 that her favourite bear was very good at keeping away monsters. If she does wake with a nightmare she asks for him and goes back to sleep with no problems.

My DD was scared of monsters! Wouldnt go to sleep. Then I realised she was watching Scooby Doo! We have since cut that out and she is fine now. Keep an eye on watch she is watching!:)

We also found that alot of this came from things she was watching on tv - I remember an episode of Charlie and Lola really set her off when she was about three. Monsters/ghosts had never really occured to her before that and she saw this episode where they were in spooky castle and suddenly we were scared of monsters
One thing that really worked with her was filling a spray bottle with water and we told her it was "Monster Spray". We sprayed it around the room at bedtime and left it outside the door - it really seemed to help.
We did the same at Emmylou  a spray bottle with water and a few drops of lavedar, did the trick ;)
Maybe limit the amount of TV time before bed? I try and not have it on about an hour before bedtime to get DS1 to relax and wind down, sometimes an overstimulated brain creates all sorts of wild imaginations!

When our DD had issues with monsters in her chest of drawers (only whenever she was told to go to bed!), we used her toy guns to "shoot em up" and out of every drawer.
Worked well until she saw as a way to delay bedtime..:o Thankfully her fears only lasted a few weeks
DD slept with her bear "pinkie" (its a boy bear) and superman together they can defeat all monsters and ghosts. havent had a problem since.

This sounded like such a great idea. We went & got a spray bottle & some lavender & had him convinced BUT over trying it for the past few nights it's made it worse!
I'm sure he's just doing it because he doesn't want to deal with going to bed & being away from us BUT he's almost 3 & should be able to understand it's BEDTIME (close eyes & sleep).
TV goes off at dinner & stays off until he's asleep it just messes with their heads too much.
Anymore ideas?
We watched monsters inc with DD and really played up the fact that sully and mike are friendly monsters. Now she's got a HUGE sully monster poster on her wall and loves it -so we went from 1 extreme to the other:confused:
