Will my Hospital Stay be covered ??

Hi,
I think I may be pregnant my husband and I are covered by private hospital cover and 2 months ago up graded to cover starting a family, but you have to be in it 12 months before you are covered, can anyone tell me if my stay at hospital in a private room will be covered if I am pregnant now? or is it classed as a pregnancy thing and not just a hospital stay? we only have one hospital here and I don't think I would cope being in a room with 3 other mums and bubs

If you are referring to staying in hospital for the birth of your baby, the blunt answer is no.

The babies due date would still fall within your 12 month waiting period and any stay in hospital relating to the pregnancy or birth of your baby would fall within this waiting period and not be payable.

I would suggest asking your health fund if they cover pregnancy in a public hospital as a private patient if you are still in your waiting period for full private cover.

If you were to fall pregnant within the 12 month waiting period, but the baby was not due to be born until after the 12 month wait is finished - then the hospital stay would be covered.

I went through my first pregnancy and labour without private health and I too didn't fancy the thought of sharing a room. So I asked at RPAH how much they would charge me for a non private patient to have a private room. I kid you not my jaw dropped. I can't remember exactly what they said, but it was thousands for a 4 night stay. I ended up staying 7 nights so it would've cost a bomb.

Hi, with our private health insurance if you haven't had full pregnancy cover for 12 months prior to your baby being delivered then they won't cover you for any pregnancy related stay in either a private or public hospital as a private paitent. It's probably best to ring your insurer and double check with them as all health funds are different.

Double check with your provider but I would say yes you will be covered. I only had and still only have hospital cover and my hospital stay was covered when I had DD.

Who are you insured thru?? I am in NIB, when I fell pregnant I had only recently upgraded to private hospital (had extras cover for years) when I phoned to enquire would you believe they waived the waiting period and fully covered me :yelclap:.
Because dh and i had been with NIB for years they simply waived the waiting period.
So give your fund a ring and see what they will do! Goodluck.

Thank you Ladies for your help, we are insured with Medibank I will try and find time to go see them because I have been with them for many years under my mum and dads cover and when we got engaged Matt and I got our own so maybe they can wave the waiting for us!!!!!

Oh Medibank! I can help you now, I worked for them up until giving birth to DS and their rules don't change lol
