Hi not sure if I put this in right place so please move if not :)
We have bought our bump a cot and not a bassinette...I was planning to put bump straight into cot...we have a sleep positioner and for when it big enough a 0-6 mths gro bag - but someone has said to me "oh no you cant put a baby straight into a cot without a snuggle bed" Is this true:confused: I have looked at these on the net and retail about $119+ and even on ebay still quite pricy  ...are they necessary or will I be okay with just what we got? I was planning to swaddle bump for first couple of weeks anyway until was big enough for gro bag...has anyone got any advice for a very naieve 1st mummy to be whose pockets are not very deep anymore?

if you are using a sleep positioner i dont see any problems with it
When we got from from the hospital DS was 3 days old and he went straight into his big cot! DS was only swaddled for the first week as he hated being confined!

Hi Georgiem,
Of course you can put bubby straight into a cot along as you place him/her at the very end of the cot and not have any bumpers around the sides. Also make sure you tuck the blankets right under the cot so bub can't move too much.
:fingerscrossed:
Hi I put my first child into a cot straight away but i found that he did not sleep too well. I think he may have felt a bit insecure in there as he looked tiny in there. I am going to put my second (due in 7 weeks) in to a bassinet. I have heard that the Snuggle beds are supposed to be good.

I also think putting bub into a basinette is a much safer thing to do. Plus you can wheel bubby around in the house where ever you are  instead of having to going into the room and checking bubs every so often.

I personally thank the Lord for whoever invented those Tetra mattresses!
Our boys slept in a bassinet first with the Tetra mattress and I found it very difficult to get them accustomed to the cot when the time came because it didn't have the Tetra mattress (back in 'my' day you couldn't get them as easily as you do now).
My boys absolutely adored it, but of course, you don't necessarily 'need' one. It's snuggly, and moulds to their body so I can see why babies love them.
Could you maybe let it slip to family members that you need one?
It would make much more sense if family members even put in together and bought something like that for bubs instead of the 79 stuffed toys that you will no doubt get!!
I put DD in a bassinette for the first week. Then I put the basinette minus the satnd in the cot the following week so she could get used to the cot without it being too much of a change. Then when she was about 2 weeks old I put her straight into the cot. She was fine and slept really well. There really was no point in me buying a basinette.
I just wrapped her up tightly in a cotton blankie thing so she would feel secure.

i put my DS straight into the cot as i had read that it would prevent the unsettledness linked to changing them to the cot later on. anyway, my mum gave me a hard time (lol) about it and then someone lent me the most amazing bassinette. it was huge and did both my babies until they were 5 months old. it was on wheels, which helped with the unsettledness that newborns experience in the evenings in the early months.
the next time i will use the bassinet again. although, there's plenty of peopl,e who put bub straight into cot.
I put both DDs straight into a cot, no positioner, wrapping, nothing. They both slept pretty well (DD2 self settled from day one).
If you can borrow a bassinet - go for it, but I wouldn't spend money on one. However, my girls never had any sleep problems - if they had, I might have tried it.
Cheers
Of cause you can put your newborn in a cot.
My DS went straight into a cot, no snuggle bed and he had no problem at all.

I put all 3 of mine straight into a cot from the day they got home from hospital. No tetra mattresses, nothing. Just wrapped them and put them in there. They "slept like a baby".

My son was too big for a bassinette it seemed there was too much **** around him to. I put him in a tetra bed as we didn't have any room in our bedroom also. He was really good in his cot. I will do it with our second and this will get him used to his own room.
Never was a mother that had to have her baby really close. The next room was close enough. Too much crying and just needed to shut the door sometimes.

DS was in the bassinette for the first two months then cot.
DD went into the cot after day 3 at home. She would not sleep in the bassinette at all & slept through from 7weeks old & self settles.
Its your decision but you certainly can put bubs straight into the cot if you wish.

I put both my DS's in the cot from day one. Bub #1 next to my bed and #2 in his own room. No problem. If you think that they do need more...you can always get the snuggle bed afterwards.
Wyatt refused to sleep in his bassinette and slept much better in his cot from about 3 days old or he would sleep with me tummy to tummy to help with his reflux.

i put both of my ds in bassenettes first for 6 wks then they went to there cots and have been in there ever since i think that bassenettes are more safe for new borns but each to there own
I was told a story by a kid's dad, they didn't know what they were in for with the bubs, they took her home from hospital and thought she was way too litt efor a cot, so they put her in a cushioned cardboard box on the dinner table and slept on the chairs LOL

With my twins, I put one straight into his cot (wrapped tightly) and the other slept in a rocker in our room. We did this because they were both really noisy sleepers and we didn't want one waking the other(?remember, we had absolutely no idea what we were doing!!) We moved him into his cot at about 12 weeks.
Anyway, the one that went into his cot straight up slept through the night from 6 weeks, the other was still waking up at 20 weeks.
This next one will be going straight into a cot. I think that the sooner they get used to sleeping in their own bed, the better.

Ok, i know in Australia that bumpers are a HUGE no-no, but our midwife here told us that the cot would be too big for Arthur and he would be overwhelmed to be put in there as a little baby, that they really need to feel secure and snuggly. We had a sleep postioner and bumpers (if bumpers are those kind of screeny-type things that you tie onto the bars) & we swaddled him. We used them up until about 3 1/2 months. (It was winter here and really cold, -10 overnight/-2 during the day)
It's a big, wide cot, we had him on the highest level and i never felt that the airflow for him was restricted.
That's just what we did, if you're interested. :)

Yep :D .
I didn't know they were supposed to go into a bassinette, so into a cot the dude went... not even wrapped up - he didn't like it.
I put ds straight in the cot, he has a lambskin in there as well, but he used to kick his blankets off, or kick himself out from underneath ! So i went and bought a few sleeping bags (he likes to kick around so needs room lol) and he has been fine. Although i have kept his cot in my room for comfort.

When DP and myself brought DD home she went straight into her cot. Not a problem. The only trouble is getting her to sleep but rubbing her back or softly stroking her head helps :smiliedance:
I had a bassinette but found it was too hot and stuffy (I had a Dec babe). If I ever have another baby I would put them in the cot to begin with as long as you are happy not having them in the same room as you. I had my bub in the same room for 3 weeks before DH went back to work, it was too disturbing for him. Bubs only used the bassinette for 10 weeks. I can hear bubs fine from the other end of the house where his room is. I use a antiroll pillow, have done since birth and he is now 5.5months, it is really good as he can't slide downwards.
If you want a bassinette I would get a second hand one so you can resell and get most of your money back don't go spending heaps on it. You can buy new mattresses for $10 from Big W.
Those Tetra beds are supposed to be good but I personally couldn't justify the money.
You obviously feel happy with just using a cot so I would just do that and don't worry about what others say. My friend used at cot straight away and her mum didn't like it! Bubs was and is fine :)
I had both my kids in a bassinette first, and just think they feel more secure that way, but I suppose there is no harm in trying the cot straight away. I know if you are looking for a bassinette, those cane baskets/ most of them are plastic, but look like cane, are not that expensive to pick up second hand...

I think that it really depends on your individual baby.
I never purchased a basinette as I wanted DD to go straight into her cot. In the hospital, they have those little plastic cribs that bubs can sleep in...but my DD just HATED being in them from day 1. I was quite relieved that I didn't have one at home (she was also a BIG girl...so she'd probably only use one for a month anyway...). Instead, I began to co-sleep with her (it was the only way she WASN'T whingey!).
When I went home, I tried to put her in the cot, but she didn't like it much. I couldn't swaddle her because she simply did not like it. She would kick and scream until the blankets were loose...and she was FREEZING (she was a Winter baby). So I continued with the co-sleeping (it worked better for Breastfeeding at night...all I had to do was lay on my side and plop out my boob and let her go for it...it was much warmer and more comfy than sitting up trying to do it).
After a while, I wanted to move her into the cot (she started getting wriggly and was constantly hogging my blanket and bed space)...but she wouldn't have a bar of it. What we did, was place her in her pram and had it right next to the bed. That way, I could keep an eye on her (I would constantly get up to check that she was breathing...lol) and still stay in bed...and if I needed to feed her she was only an armslength away. I could also "rock her" to sleep.
Eventually we moved her into the cot...and now that's where she sleeps.
I think there's no real answer...you probably won't know what works best until your baby is born. Like I said, I was thinking to use the cot straight away...but that didn't work for us. A basinette wouldn;t have either...DD wanted to sleep with me (kind of sweet when you forget the bed-hogging...lol).

I put DS straight into a cot and we had no problems i thought it would be easier then trying to adjust him to something NEW when he was so new to it all....
