Mum told me last night that if a baby is blue around the mouth (but otherwise healthy and not having breathing issues) it means they have wind.

Anyone else heard of this?

It seemed kinda true, cause she sat him on her knee and proceeded to get another burp out of him then he seemed much happier and less blue.....

Hi Kitkat

Kade is a very 'windy baby' (!) and he certainly gets blue around the mouth when he has it. I've heard this from my mum, MIL, health nurse and various friends. So I think there may be some merit to it!

I agree. My DD used to get a bit blue around the mouth when she had wind too - and it went away once she'd got rid of the wind.

I find its true with EJ - a few people told me the same - The more wind the more noticable it is

Yep, true with both my boys.

The midwife in hospital told me this too, and it turned out to be true for my boy.

My CHCN pointed it out on my DD and said "some people will tell you that this is a sign of wind, but that's an old wives' tale". I can't say that it follows a pattern, sometimes she is blue and windy and sometimes blue and not;)

My mum used to say it too me about DS, but I could never see it! :)

Robin Barker (Of "Baby Love" fame) says that its an old wives tale. My mum says its true. I've never noticed a pattern, so I don't have an opinion!

oh Goodness!
If this is true, i should watch for DS. He will either pop or take off one of these days with the extent that his lips turn blue sometimes.
Never heard this before. It's interesting though.

I have our 6 month CMHN check up in about an hour. I will sure to pick our nurse's brain on the issue.
Let you knkow what her view is on the matter! ;)

Hey Lut,

Did you get a chance to ask the CHN? :)

Thank you thank you thankyou... I'm losing my mind! :hugs:
I could not for the life of me remember which thread it was that we were discussing this.
It's end of semester x sleep deprivation. :banghead:

Anyway, i DID ask the CMHN about the blue mouth. She said it is true, she does believe that when a baby has lots of wind, they go blue around the mouth (above top lip only apparently). She assures me this is only the case when the blue is around the mouth, and wind does not result in blue lips. So, um... this leaves me with some concern as DS often has blue lips.. and that's when he is happily playing.
She said to ask about it to my GP (as soon as i find a good one! ) when i get there next, but not to be too worried about it in the meantime.

Thanks Lut!

I wonder what it is that causes it!?! Other than wind that is....Weird!

Hmmm...definately ask about the blue lips! If you bub is happy playing all the time, I'm sure its nothing to serious! Maybe he is just a bit cold?

I do think the same thing, but we have the ducted heating on all the time. And his fingers and toes are warm. :detective:
I am clueless.
It stands out too, because he generally has quite full and red lips. The edible little being!
I will be sure to get it checked out. But like i said, he otherwise seems quite happy and i haven't seen anything else that causes concern.. like coughing or anything.

I'm curious to see if anyone can spot the pattern with the blue on top of the mouth and wind.

It was certainly true for Owen. He always was blue around the mouth when he had wind.

This is one way I've been able to tell with all 3 of my kids, and once they bring up the wind it goes away.

Blue above the top lip is a sign of wind as my bubs had it when he was little he no longer has it now as he doesnt have issues with wind anymore....

Lut not trying to stress you but my bubs has blue lips and it is because he has problems with his heart.. blueness in the lips is usually cyanosis and needs to be looked at.. my bubs gets it due to his oxygen levels being poor due to oxygenated blood and non oxygenated blood mixing in the chamber in his heart .. which he will have corrective surgery for in a few months time...

I am in no way saying your bubs has a problem just saying best to check it out...

DianneKB- thanks for your post. I've been looking out for it actually. And thankfully, I haven't seen any sign of this for the last 2-3 weeks. :fingerscrossed: I don't come across it again!
I'm so sorry about your little one. Still, we're fortunate to be living in a country where we have access to excellent medical advice and intervention.
:fingerscrossed: all is well with your little one.

And I haven't discounted the blue lips yet. I'm still keeping an extremely close eye out for it.
First sign of it reappearing and you can bet i'll be pounding on the Dr's door!

I found it to be true with both of my bubs, but the best way to tell if they had wind was to sit quietly with them sitting on your knee and rest your hand gently on thier back ... you could generally feel little bubbles.

My ds constantly has blue lips and has no problems with his heart ... he seems to just need more clothing than other kids! An extra jumper tends to fix him up ...

My mum and MIL told me this - it was definitely true for my DS. And the worse the wind was the more intense the blue got! Once the wind was gone there wasn't a hint of blue around his mouth.
