View Full Version : Do you set aside $$ for emergency & rely on child support?
My 4yo reverse cylce air-con has died and to replace it is $2700 OMG:crying:
i have no money set aside for such a BIG cost item, although was/am expecting my old fridge to die so was preparing for that not this aircon.
My house is a high set queenslander and gets pretty damn hot so I don't think I can wait as it is the hottest part coming up.
thought i might take some baby stuff to market to sell to help raise the money...
Also I relied on childsupport BIG MISTAKE as my ex got retrenched 6 wks ago so have not had any child support. For those who get child support are you reliant on it or do you keep separate?

Can you get a Harvey Moron type of deal (pay nothing for 30/50 months thing)?
possibly, but would still have to pay installment and delivery of system and removal of broken one $750+. the problem with this is last time i got a deal from AMart but when they don't fix things in-house and if something goes wrong you have to get the thing taken apart and sent somewhere.
i will check out some places on weekend for interest free.
wondering if people plan for these expenses.
I rely on my child support to cover part of our general expenses too so i would be stuffed the X lost his job and couldn't pay it.
For any big items i would have to ask my parents for help and pay them back...but you have definently made me think about it and perhaps i should look at my budget and put a bit away each fortnight for a rainy day

Have you got contents insurance (if so you may be able to ring your insurer and see if its covered under your insurance?).
Is it really dead (have you had a professional out to have a look at it or just a friend?).
If you havent had a professional out to look at it (i would be calling one in).
The only other option you have is hardly normal.
Good luck

oops forgot to say that i get the minimum childsupport (around $13 pf for two kids) so i dont really count on it (and luckily i dont as he has fallen into errors ).
I am confused as that $13 is for both kids not per child and he is having trouble paying that :D
i dont get any child support,
i put money away each f/n for emergencies.

yes had an airconditioning expert which said there was a whole in the pipe which caused the gas to run out and since it was operating without gas it has seized the compressor and you can't get parts or fix. I think it had a 2 yr warantee but will check, don't think insurance would cover that sort of thing.

I have been pretty lucky in child support as ex has paid $100 p/w. I don't know if my centrelink payment is calculated on this or if i should phone and tell them it is now $0 p/w.

I try make sure i always have at least $500 put away for emergencys- car brake down, dr bills etc... just in case. But thats from the supplement $ we get after july and at the moment i have the KRudd $ for emergencies as well.
I do get CS but i dont like to rely on it- we wusually spend it on clothes for DD if she needs them or stuff that arent essential but nice for her to have and we save the rest.

I do rely on my child support but I also save money in case something goes wrong, i also hae fantastic parents that would not let there granddaughter go without air con, I am blessed to have the best parents in the world as I would be totally screwed without them and i agve just started dating a guy and he doesnt let me pay for anything and insists on givng me $50 a week becasue he stays for dinner a few times a week etc, I really hope you can get it fixed, good luck

I brought a new car as my old one was dying. My ex swore on his life and everything else that he would Start paying me regularly from his bank to mine, I set up the accounts and everything.
Luckily I had put the money from my old car into the finance account and realised that his money wasn't there as the account was just going down.
Now I am stuck paying a $100 per week car finance and he is still living...:banghead:
I am putting away money each week into an account for rego and stuff, I tried to buy a newer car with warranty so If it broke it wouldn't be me paying it all.
I personally don't see air con as an emergency, but if I were to have such a big thing come along I would be stuck. I have always sworn I would never get a credit card but if it WAS an emergency I would get one to pay it (for me it would be the damn car!!)
I am trying to get CS to collect from him and to give him back just a little piece of Karma, I am getting the payments re-assessed so instead of the $90 a week he should pay according to his Last job it will be a LOT more with his new Full time job. haha to him, He could've been saving money if he gave me what he was supposed to originally! (thats IF they can get ANYTHING!)

ok not emergency but i mean putting away money to tend to unexpected expenses.
