Was just wondering what everyone is feeding their bub's for Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
I have made up my own puree's but am struggling with when i fed her what etc.
So just wondering what others are feeding their babies for each meal.
Have you started with meats?
Thanks,
Breakfast - Rice cereal with pears/banana 2/3 tblsp
Lunch - Usually a potato/pumpkin/sweet potato mash, sometimes a meat dish depending on what I have in the freezer, 2/3 tblsp
Dinner - Have started on meat and veg dishes but the meat content is still very low and has been stewed so very soft. eg.
Beef, carrot and lentils,
Lamb, potato and carrot
Chicken, broccoli, sweet potato and rice
Chicken, apple and potato
With all the lunch/dinner dishes I make a big batch and freeze in 3 tblsp lots. I use the Avent EBM storage containers which freeze and reheat very well.
Once Henry can have wheat I will replace the rice cereal with a mixed grain cereal. Around the same time I will start him with some yoghurt and fruit puree and that can replace one of the main meals. (Personally I like buying jalna or greek yoghurt and not buying the baby yoghurts.)
Henry also now has a little taste of "finger food" just a sliver or two of soft fruit when DD and I have afternoon tea, mainly just to keep him occupied trying to pick it up :D He seems to be chewing quite well though when he manages to get some into his mouth.
Bridie has only just started eating lunch...I'm struggling a bit with lunches...
She eats fruit puree and farex for breakfast, probably 2 tablespoons. For lunch it's usually yoghurt or fruit in one of those mesh baggie things. For dinner it's 3-4 cubes (ice cube size) of vege puree that I've made in bulk, could be carrot, pumpkin, sweet potato, potato, zucchini, broccoli, beans, or corn. I haven't really started with the meat as I'm not really sure how to prepare it. I tried Bridie with some rice...wouldn't have a bar of it!
Good luck...I'll be keeping an eye on this thread...great idea!
Hi girls haven't been around for a while this thread is a great idea!!!!
Here's what we feed Miss Lily!!!
B'fast - 1/2 weetbix with fruit puree
lunch - fruit sometimes with either yogurt or custard
dinner - 2-3 ice cubes vegies have tried pumpkin, carrot, broccoli, sweet potato, peas will usually mix a couple together she seems to like this.
Sometimes I will give her a few teaspoons of the Heinz fruit gel.
As well as probably about 4 - 5 breastfeeds a day
She is a going really well on solids and loves also to suck on a piece of vegimite toast and she will suck on a rusk too!!!

Hi Mel I have found that the best way to prepare meat is to make like a stew and wiz it all up into a puree then freeze it in sections. This is what I have done with my other girls and they have really enjoyed it!!!
:flowerz:

Mel - the way I prepare Henry's meatier meals is usually on the night's when we have a casserole/stew (couple of times per week). I prepare his meals alongside ours in it's own little ovenproof dish.
I brown his meat the same as ours (in a little olive oil) then pull his out and put it in his container. Then I add the rice, carrots, sweet potato, lentils or rice to the dish with some water and cook it on low (about 160) probably for an hour or so. If there is something that needs less cooking (like the broccoli or if you are giving beans/peas) I just put that in towards the end.
I pull the meat out and remove any grissly bits and if it is on the bone I remove that before adding it back in and giving the whole thing a blitz with my hand mixer. With the rice if it is a bit overcooked it mushes down well. DD was never keen on adult style cooked rice but loved rice cooked in with a dish or a risotto/baked rice using arborio which becomes nice and creamy.
I hope that explains it :) (yeah..what Lissa just posted!)
Thanks girls...I'll give the meat a go! I'm sure she'll like it, she doesn't seem to be a fussy eater thank goodness, the only thing she hasn't been keen on is avocado! She'll even eat spinach! She certainly eats more veges than her dad!
I didn't add before that Bridie still has 4-5 milk feeds a day too...her first feed is BF, then the next 2 are formula (to fit in with my work hours) and then 1 or 2 BF's in the evening.

Thanks for your replies ladies, it has really given me something to work with. I think i will try to introduce meat soon.
I have been doing fruit for lunch and vegies for dinner, and in the last week i have been giving her Farex with EBM and Pears/Apple for Breakfast, but kept forgetting what i had fed her the day before and ended up doing the same thing!!
I have just done some more puree vegies and will keep the detailed description of how to cook the meat meals - Thanks Al, can always count on you.
Will also try the fruit with yoghart or custard soon which Lissa suggested.
Thanks again, it is good to hear what other ppl are doing.
Hi again, I made a chicken puree this morning, just cooked the chicken in the frypan, no oil or anything, then into the blender with a bit of boiled water, bridie liked it, mixed it with a bit of broccoli and froze the rest! YUM!
Breastmilk.
Kymmy - The babies whom we are discussing in this thread are all 6mo (and BTW are also breastfed).
The thread is to gain tips/ideas for conventional solids introduction.
Has anyone tried any new recipes??? We tried Henry with some polenta (with some chicken and vegies) and he enjoyed that too
I also gave him some yoghurt the other day but it went straight through him. Same thing happened with DD when I first gave her some yoghurt. I think I'll wait another few weeks before trying him again. Once DD could tolerate it, yoghurt became one of her favourites.
You can also make your fruit purees into more of a gel. With pureed apple you can add some arrowroot to thicken it (use it the same way you would use cornflour) and it makes a mix that is a bit like the apple filling in apple turnovers..yum!:chef:

Heaps of breastmilk, when ever he wants it, but usually it is only 4-6times a day (depending on the weather) and 1-2 times over-night and also 2-3 solid meals a day.
Breakfast:
rice cereal + fruit puree
or
3/4 weetbix + water (I add a little custard to make it creamier)
Lunch:
Oatmeal + fruit
&/or
custard (fruit or plain)
&/or
fruit gel
Dinner:
Veggies (mixed or singular) I add rice cereal to anything that is too runny as he likes to "chew" so I make it a bit thicker so he can practice.
I haven't started him on any meat meals yet...but am thinking of trialing some in the next few weeks
I also haven't started him on fingerfoods yet, but will do that when he learns to sit up a bit better on his own.
He is also having water on occation as it's been so hot lately..
Alison thanks for the tip on making the purees thicker. Maddison has actually gone off anything pureed but I can still try it with fruit.
Maddison has 3 meals a day (if she wants it, sometimes just doesn't want dinner ) and milk feeds whenever she wants them. Normally 3-4 a day and she often drinks about 8 oz of water, I think because of the heat.
For breakfast - Rafferty's baby rice either with or without pureed fruit (I just bought the Apricot and Banana flavour one - she loved it)
For lunch - some fruit, maybe a cracker or toast to suck on, yoghurt
For dinner - meat and vegetables. Not pureed any more she doesn't like that, it has to be as we are eating it, small pieces of course. Yoghurt afterwards if she wants it.
She loves chewing on pieces of meat and vegetables and seems to cope very well with that. I give her lactose free yoghurts as normal went straight through her (husband is a coeliac and lactose intolerant) and gluten free bread. She seems fine with that and loves it. I give her finger foods as well, sticks of cooked carrot, slices of peeled apple or pear, banana etc. Some make it to her mouth but most is dropped on the floor or mashed to pieces, bless her.
Sorry got to go she wants attention.

Henry does the same thing. Some makes into his mouth but most ends up squished or on the floor. It's more of a game for him and is good for his coordination trying to pick it up :)
What sort of bread is that? Is it commonly available?
That Rafferty's rice cereal does taste nicer...I think it must be lightly toasted as it has a nuttier flavour than the usual rice cereal.
Does anyone's else's babies get absolutely frantic when it's time to be fed? Henry is so desperate for his meal he starts banging on the table  He certainly enjoys his food this boy.

I buy the gluten free bread in Coles, (Country life Bakery) it is available from Woolworths as well and most health food shops will sell it. If you are looking in the supermarket it is often found with the normal bread, not in the health food section (where other gluten free products are found) If you are struggling to find it, look for any packaging that is half the normal loaf size, that is probably it.
I would recommend toasting it as it can be quite heavy going. You may be lucky enough to have a gluten free bakery in your town/city which will sell it without the need for toasting, not yet tried it though. It doesn't have a long shelf life so you normally need to freeze it pretty quickly. I tend to leave it in the cupboard for a day so we can have it fresh for breakfast then I freeze it. Just pop it in the toaster on the defrost setting then toast as normal. Not quite as nice once it has been frozen, but it does the job.
Maddison loves her food but she doesn't seem to get overly excited when I put her in her high chair, this may be because her teeth are coming through and she has gone off food slightly.
Hi Gals
Apart from the solid diet, how much milk are these babies having(roughly)....
Since Aleesha has recovered from being sick, she went off the solids....so i started from scratch again; also weaning her onto formula feeds....she usually takes just 110-120 ml FF at one go,three times a day n 2 BF(early morning n late night). I am worried she is not having enough.....
Her pattern is Bf---FF---farex(1-2tbsp)---FF---BF/FF.What should i do to improve her feeding schedule?
Please help....
Alabama - Henry has 5-7 breastfeeds per day (depending on his own demands and whether he wakes for an early morning feed or not).
As for volumes, I think it is common for b/f babies to only drink smaller amounts of formula initially when they are given bottles because they aren't used to drinking large amounts at one time (have more smaller, more frequent feeds).
I think I had read somewhere than an average b/f can range enormously in volume between different women and babies but the average was actually only 120ml at one time....so not surprising she doesn't have as much formula. As she gets used to it she might have more but some babies never drink all their bottles.
I would let her decide how much she wants and try not to worry too much.:)
Thanks Alison
I m actually starting work in 2 weeks..that's why i m worried....i just hope she becomes alright soon...expecting too much from her i guess!!!!!!!!!!
thanks!
hi gals
do u all follow some kind of routine for ur kiddies?
can u guide me as how to start it????
thanks
Not really Alabama. Henry has a b/f when he wakes up then I give him breakfast about an hour later. Usually it takes that long before I am ready because I give DD her breakfast, pump some EBM and clean up a bit. He has a morning sleep about 2-3 hours after he wakes. These days his sleeps are only short so he is up again maybe an hour later. He has another b/f and I give him lunch anywhere from 11-12:30. He then has another sleep a little while after, wakes after a short nap, b/f then is up usually for the rest of the day until bedtime at 7pm. Sometimes he has a third nap in the afternoon around 3-4 but not regularly.
In the afternoon he seems to need more feeds than in the morning so I just give it to him whenever he gets a bit whingey.
I don't bother with routines much as I find they usually don't work out and I just feel like a failure :o I try to stay flexible.
I hope that helps.:)
Hi girls just thought I would drop in and let you know Lily's new fave finger food!!!! Watermelon!!!!!! :yelclap: She loves it I just cut it up into fingers for her and she sucks and munches away it's a good one thought you might like to give it a try if you haven't already it's pretty safe too and it tends to crush easily so she can chew and swallow it without too much trouble

Hi All,
Tried one of those Fruit Custards the other day... not good at all. It made her tummy very upset, she was hard to settle and then the next day had 6 pooy nappies to deal with... think i will stay away from those can custards (cheese goes straight through DF so dairy foods might be the same for J)
Also tried some chicken, she did not take to that either, will wait a bit longer and try meat again.
Tried the watermelon though and she LOVED it. Thanks for the tip!
Have still been giving her fruits and vegies she loves them.
Lily is the same with dairy if I give it to her she will :barf:until every last bit of it is out of her little tummy. Spoke to the health nurse about it and she said she is more thank likely just intolerant at the moment wait a while and try again later on!!!!
Great to hear she loved the watermelon it is a good one!!!
Lissa we tried the watermelon too and Henry gives it the thumbs up. Thanks for mentioning it as I don't normally buy it :)

Hi Al,
Just wondering if you blend all the vegies etc together before you freeze it? Am i doing it the hard way by freezing it seperatly?
How are other mumma's going with their food perperations?
I mash them all together or now leave it all a bit lumpy. Henry seems pretty good with bits in it so I am not bothering with blending anymore unless the meat is a bit tougher than I would like. Otherwise I just chop it up a bit. I freeze it in ready made meals.
I have been making baked rice pudding for Henry lately and he is loving that. It is made with full cream milk and Henry seemed fine with it despite being a bit sensitive to yoghurt.
Another new thing I tried the other day was homemade pasta sauce with soup pasta mixed through it...also was a hit (was so delicious I ate some myself!):D

You are being so creative, (and you said you were a bad housewife, i dont think so!) i am not really that good with cooking, and unsure of what to feed Jessica. Will have to work on that i think. Still have not introduced meat. Have just been doing differnet fruits, vegies and Yoghart.
Thanks for your tips... maybe you should start writing a recipe book, i would buy it!!
