What happend next with your LO.

My DS had grommets put in at 12 months due to constant infections and glue ear. I noticed a huge difference in everything immediately. he started eating/chattering and most importantly ...sleeping:yelclap:

Yay he was cured....or so I thought:(

It has been 4 months since his post OP check and in this time he has had 2 ear infections and 2 bouts of tonsilitis. So sice that month of bliss all the regular symptomns have returned, lack of appetite, speech no longer progressing, waking several times a night.

i'm thinking that due to the infections the grommets may have become blocked and therefore the glue ear is building up again. When I look at him in his cot at night when he is crying out he keeps slapping himself over the head.

For those of you who's LO has had grommets put in, was first time a charm or did they need further treatment. I am booked in to see the ENT at the end of feb.
Might see if they have had any cancellations and get in earlier.

I'd love to hear of any experiences to do with grommets

DD#2 has had grommets in 3 times. Apparently they fell out twice. But since her tubes have widened she doesn't get ear infections very often at all (maybe twice since she was 4).

Good luck, hon and hope there's light at the end of the tunnel.

:crying:I'll end up in the loony bin by the time he's 4:p.
I'll be searching for that light;)
So will DS2

I have had grommets 5 times when I was a littlie. Unfortunately I continued to have ongoing problems then in my mid-teens I had a pretty major op to have the mastoid removed from my ear as it was just full of infection cells.
In saying all that though I grew up pretty normally and met all my milestones along the way though my mum says I was a bit of a naughty kid:o

Grommets are meant to fall out over a period of time. Some kids need further sets of grommets over the years and have no further problems as the eustation tubes develops enough to drain fluid etc.

Goodluck with your little one.

Thanks Mrs Twith, I'd never heard of the mastoid, that was interesting.

Ds's grommets are still in there I checked the other day:laughing:, I bought an otoscope to have at home.

My brother had grommets 6 or 7 times before the age of 6. He did start early though (less than 12 months). Whenever they fell out he was in trouble pretty quickly. I'm suprised that your ds has ongoing ear infections after grommets - definitely needs to see an ENT - pity you have to wait another month - can you go on a cancellation list or something?

My ds had grommets 9 months ago and hasn't had any trouble with his ears since then and they are still in place (usually they last 6 - 18 months). I'm waiting for his to fall out and dreading it ... I know he'll need more :(

My son (2 1/2yrs) was at the stage a year ago where he absolutely needed grommets - constant runny nose and glue ear. I saw a naturopath and he told me to change him off full cream milk and give him Zymil (lactose free from supermarket) It has worked for over a year now. He does have small amounts of normal yoghurts and other stuff but only in small lots. And No Grommets !!!

It has worked for us so i thought i would share with you.

I think this is right. My DS has had recurrent ear infections so we took him of dairy and put him on a pro biotic (for children) and it stopped the infections.

He still has glue ear so grommets go in about 2 weeks but that is a different issue - drainage versus fluid build up.

If your DS is still getting fluid build up, I would look at his diet (maybe see a naturopath), go back to the ENT for review to make sure that not only the grommets are still in but that they are in the right spot and also consider seeing an osteopath for gentle cranial realignment to assist with drainage.

I'd also consider whether he's getting any teeth through - this can have an effect too.

And I'd get a copy of the book "Baby Talk" if you can to assist with the speech issues.

I'm glad they worked for your DS, hopefully he has outgrown the infections by the time they fall out:fingerscrossed:

Thanks for sharing that, glad you could avoid the grommets and switching has worked for you. Ds already drinks LF milk and has done so along with BF since 10 months. :goodvibes:

Thank you
I will go back to the ENT, get his hearing checked etc and go from there with the speech and the like.
He always seemed to get an ear infection coincide with a new tooth though, too many times for it to be coincidence.
Hope your DS's op goes well, The grommets do seem to make ear infections less painful as there is no pressure build. Hopefully your DS won't get anymore so it won't be an issue.
Did you try the osteopath?? or are you thinking about it?
