Can anyone give me a ball park figure of how much it would cost to see a paediatrician without private health insurance? Would I get any money back from medicare?
I've been on the waiting list for like 4 months now for a public paediatrician & apparently I had an appointment at the beginning of Feb (didn't know about this) but they called me to cancel it anyway & reschedule it to goodness know when.
Any insight would be helpful. Cheers.

I don't think you could claim it on the healthfund even if you had it. You get a portion back from medicare not sure of the percentage though. The cost varies depending on location in my experience. Last time I went I think I paid $180ish.

All depends ...
Some are around $120 but others are way up around $280 ....
Our current one is of the latter but we are bulk billed due to G being on a HCC but I couldnt care to be honest cause I would pay that much as he is wonderful !
His GI is super exxy too ...
Oh the joys !
My dd's pead was free for the first visit and each follow up has been $80 less Medicare rebate of approx $56, therefore costing approx $24. Quite affordable imo.
Glad i'm not paying what others are.

I would guess a ballpark $200 and you would get around $80 back on Medicare (you don't get anything from private health). As mentioned, your first appointment is much longer (due to a medical history being taken), so it may cost a bit more.
We pay $100 out of pocket for DS paed, that's per visit.
I cannot remember if we claim any of that back, once we go over the threashold maybe?

We paid $200 for the initial visit and $100 each one thereafter. Can't remember how much we got back from medicare.
PHI doesn't cover paeds.

The paed Imy is seeing is $200 initial visit - and about $110 each subsequent visit. Not sure how much I get back from medicare.
You can call the paeds office though and ask for the price - thats what i did to ensure i didn't get a 'surprise' on the day :)

We are charged $250 for the first visit and around $160 for the ones after.
As the Dr gives a referral for 12 months it means we have to pay the $250 again each year.
You claim through medicare as per your GP ... it's only claimable through private health if you are hospitalised.

We pay $90 for each appt, so that's $180 each time for us. He was our paed that attended the girls birth so have never had to pay for an initial consult. Gets booked very quickly, in fact I should probably think about booking the girls 12 month appt now...

Thanks all for your help it is much appreciated. Good to know that even though I don't have private insurance I will still be paying the same as everyone else.
So do you need a referral to see a paediatrician? I got a referral that I sent to the public hospital but do you need one for private paeds?
Basically I just want to get a lump on my daughters head checked out. It's been there since birth & I have been told it's most likely all fine but I just want to have it seen to asap to put my mind at ease. The public system is taking forever.
Yes you need a GP referal otherwise medicare wont reimburse you

I have heard Dr Prado is excellent also....was actually recommended to us for if the girls came early and we had problems with them. Luckily we didn't have any issues.
