My thread hasn't gotten a reply either..

Is GD similar to regular diabetes as far as diet is concerned??

I will have a research, but could you try looking at recipes for people with regular diabetes first, I'm sure the idea would be fairly similar.

I have not had a look at the links but when I had GD i followed a very strict low GI diet.

Here is a example of a day:

Breakfast:
2 x wheatbix & low fat milk
1 x cup of tea

Morning tea:
1 x apple

Lunch:
2 x slices of soy & lindseed bread with tuna & salad

Afternoon Tea:
1 x Orange

Dinner:
grilled meat (chicken, steak etc) with steam veg & sweet potatoes

Supper:
1 x cup Low fat milk with two teaspoons of milo

The Idiet was all about carb intake. for main meals it was around 2 to 3 serves of carbs and snack meals 1 to 2 serves. 1 serve equals 15gm of carbs

During the week I pretty much the above. On the weekends I would do roasts and stirfrys etc & pasta's (tom based).

have a look at taste.com for low GI ideas too. It helped me out wile I was pg.

I hope this helps... :D

Hi Girls,

I don't know if this helps, but for GD I had to count the carbs in each meal. You can read on the packet/box/packaging how many carbohydrates are in the food. So rather than a diet you could just make sure you stick to the following carb measures.

Breakfast 35-45 carbs
Morning tea 15 carbs
Lunch 35-45 carbs
Afternoon tea 15 carbs
Dinner 45 carbs
Supper 15 carbs.

As an example:
Breakfast might be 2 pieces of toast approx 25 carbs + butter & jam approx 7 carbs + coffee with milk approx 7 carbs

I didn't put on more than a kg after I started on the 'diet'. Also, I think GD and diabetes are a little bit different. I've just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes but haven't seen my specialist yet. The GP says I will need to watch the fat level or energy levels in foods more than carbs.

Hope that helps, good luck, hope all goes well.

Rowie you have to be really careful with low GI diets when pg, even when I had GD with DD I was having at least three serves of calcium a day! Do you have GD or are you trying to avoid it?

Kiahsmum, I am trying not to put on any weight, as I am rather large already.
I have been eating low GI yoghurt.:)

i got a call from the ob today becuase my glucose test came back really high at 12.8. most posts i have seen say they have a high reading at 8 or 10 so does that mean i am more likely to have a positive reading after my long gtt next week?

my second baby weighed 10.4 pound but i was never diagonsed but my others were fairly average 8 or 9 pound. Should i start being careful in what i eat now just in case or wait till after the next test?

In regards to changing your diet prior to the GTT test it's not advised only because it will not give them an accurate reading of your blood sugar levels. Although like me you probably feel like you want to start doing the right thing asap it may not help bub in the long run.

I would simply continue with what you normally eat & drink until after the GTT test & then see what the doctor says.

I've just started on nightly insulin injections as I couldn't, no matter what I did, get my fasting levels down enough. I struggled with it so much but in the end all that matters is that it is treated so that bub does not have to go into special care due to high blood sugar at birth. I hate the thought of them doing blood test after blood test on her until she gets 2 good readings in a row.

I'm still following a low GI diet & definitely making sure I eat some good carbs at dinner & throughout the day. It's also amazing how quickly you get the taste for diet soft drinks (Coke was my vice after they took away ham, sushi at the start).

After I finally saw a diabetes dietician I was told I was eating next to no carbs with dinner. This was why my fasting readings were still high. See the sugar that is in your system from dinner carries on overnight to help your fasting levels, this wasn't happening for me. After I fixed that I did see my fasting levels begin to drop but not enough unfortunately, hence the nightly insulin now.

A great source of carbs at dinner in this hot weather is having salad & meat wraps. A very good product is Freedom Foods Gluten Free Wholegrain Wraps. They are sold at Woolsworths, & probably Coles, in the bread section. They are really quite yummy for being gluten free.

I'm loving frozen yoghurt & just yoghurt in general just to give that sweet fix I find I'm needing during this pregnancy. I don’t think I’ve ever had so much calcium intake in my life, I bet bub is loving it though she needs strong little bones.

Walking after dinner is great too. Wait about 30 mins - 1 hr afterwards. It doesn't have to be a hard or long walk. My dh & I simply walk for about 10 - 15 mins at a moderate pace. I would also recommend being active after breakfast & lunch as well, even if it just pottering around the house doing light housework.

I've so far lost 2 kgs since being diagnosed with GD which puts my total weight gain for the pregnancy at only 3 kgs. I was slightly overweight to begin with so my midwife is fine with me losing some weight.

What you have to remember is it has to be a life change as us ladies with GD are more likely to get Type 2 diabetes later in life. My diet & exercise prior to having GD was shocking. So in a warped way getting GD has been a life saver not only for me but for dh who is now making the changes with me. He has stacked on the weight himself & was not happy about it.

I hope so of the above is helpful.

Hi girls,

I have been reading thread and very intersting, as i too am watching what i eat as i dont want to get GD, history of it in my family. I am already overweight as is and watching weight carefully.

I am now around the 14 week mark and havent gained weight, i will be happy to stay same weight, i know impossible right. Even if i put on 5 kg i would be happy.

As far as dietry links go, i have been looking also and have found little information.

I think smart eating in moderation is the key and light exercise. I just got a treadmill and love it, only do 30 mins a day, but enough to get my butt off the couch...

But yeah if anyone has any diets to recommend im all ears....

Thanks girls

K :)
