I have read that those who suffer from PCO or PCOS are sometimes put on the pill for a duration of time to clear their ovarian cysts and then come off and get pregnant

Seems a little bit of one step forward two steps back - any one have any ideas / knowledge on this ?

Thanks

greenapple - I have never heard of that before.

I would have thought it would prevent more from forming but haven't heard it can reduce the pco. I know the pill is used to reduce the symptoms but not sure about reducing PCO.

All I know from my experience is I had mild symptoms before I went on the pill and when I went off the pill my symptoms I had before came back and got worse quickly.

The pill does hide symptoms so you dont know what is naturally happening with your body.

Infertility is not necessarily the cause of the PCO, many women have the PCO but still go on to have healthy pregnancies once other symptoms are controlled, infertility, hormones etc

It is a common misconception that the main cause of PCOS is PCO but some women have PCOS without having PCO. Some women have PCO without having PCOS.

If you have any more information on this I would love to hear it because if that is true I would consider to give it a go on the pill after I have a child.

Greenapple,

I have heard the same thing, that going onto the pill MAY increase your change of falling preg.... I have been considering it myself (Cant hurt right!)

I have a doc apptment next week so I will ask her and let you know!

For people with PCOS going back on the OCP regulates the hormones again as they are out of balance when you're off it. It can make the couple of cycles after you come back off it again more promising, with ovulation for many people. It certainly worked for me, I usually ovulate for 2 cycles after coming off the pill, and then it all stops again.

I believe it's also used sometimes when a follicle does not shrink back down again after ovulation and AF and becomes a cyst. It wont get rid of the PCOS, PCO or any cysts, but can shrink the cysts and re-balance your hormones for a cycle or two.

Before I went on the pill my periods were 3-4 months apart, so I assume I had PCOS then. I went on the pill for about 4 months, then went off it and fell pregnant STRAIGHT away. I doubt that I would have fallen pregnant if I hadnt gone on the pill!!

I had DS, then was diagnosed with PCOS. My cycles became irregular again and I didnt go back on the pill. It took us 6 months to conceive this one. I had cysts all over my ovaries (and still do!) and my GP was amazed that I managed to conceive naturally, but an eggie must have escaped somehow lol.

I was actually about to go back on the pill to try it how I got pregnant the first time, but didnt need to.

I think it is worth a try :) Good lucK!

Thanks for your input!!

I have had my BT results, and my hormone levels are all normal, so looks like I wont be taking this method. But interesting to know that it has worked for some.

Hi girls,

I have been TTC since having my son in 2006. I have PCOS and an irregular cycle. My new Dr has put me on the pill also to give me a regular cycle so i can start on Clomid in a few months. It does seem backwards, but i feel a little better having m y hormones under control. How funny it is to know what day i will get my period hahahha.

hey ladies

i was told i had pcos and insulin resistance when i was only 18 so was lucky enough to get the metforin into me and lost heaps of weight on the low gi diet.

anyways fell pregnant naturally when i was 21 and had dd in jan last year, now she is 14 months we want to try again but because i still have not got my period back since her birth the dr has done all the tests to see why and my overies are still a huge mess but my insulin is perfect! so there is one plus, the dr put me on YASMIN which is an expencive pill but it doesnt effect your weight so yeah we will be on that for 6 months then off it and trying for baby naturally.

will stay in touch, but i have the best dr in the world and the best nutritionist and i dont think they would put me on the pill if it wouldnt at least try and help my non exsistant periods.:fingerscrossed:
