Has anyone been diagnosed with a dermoid cyst while they were pregnant? (Dermoids are cysts that have solid matter in them like hair, teeth and things like that).

An ultrasound in Jan showed that they thought i had one but the gyno put me off and said it was a mistake because he "couldnt feel" a cyst when he did an internal. Now I am pregnant and have just had a dating scan at 8 weeks and 2 days and it showed that the same cyst they found was present again and this time they are sure its a dermoid not just thinking.

The technician says that i need to see my dr so i can talk to someone who specialises in this area but I am afraid i will get fobbed off again.........But also, if I do have a dermoid cyst and it has to be removed (they cant be burst and have to be surgically removed) I am afraid that they will want to do it while i am pregnant and it will hurt the baby.

Has anyone else been in a situation like this? Sorry to be going on I am just a bit worried.

I am 22 weeks pregnant and had an ultrasound at 20 weeks which showed a small dermoid on my right ovary. My previous ultrasound showed a normal cyst on my left ovary which the doctor said was normal, which has now dissapered, but there was no sign of the dermoid. My doctor just told me if i get any pains i am to go straight to her or the hospital, and that when i have my antinatal visit at the hospital to ask them what the next step is.

Has anyone had one removed during pregnancy?? and can they make you infertile??

Casey,
mine was actually diagnosed by the ultrasound dr before i was pregnant and im pregnant now (and its been reaffirmed) so i would say that they didnt make me infertile. If you have to have it removed and its only small then they should be able to leave the ovary but if they have to take it then you have another ovary.

How big is your dermoid?
How do you know when your pains warrant a visit to the dr (I get pains most days on my right side but i dont know if they are pregnancy related or dermoid related and im dead scared of having it twist my ovary and require surgery)

I read on the internet (big internet researcher here) that it is safe to remove them during pregnancy during a certain time but i wouldnt be to "sure" about that because i never trust everything i read. I am hoping mine will last till bub is due and then (as i want an elective c because of previous probs) have it out at the same time as bubs.

If you get any extra info let me know because I am in the dark here as well. The GP couldnt or wouldnt tell me anything.

Goodluck with everything

Claire,

I don't know much about them either, only found out yesterday from the dr. It's suppose to be only small 8 x 7 x 5cm. My dr didn't seem to really know much either.

Don't know how bad the pain is suppose to get before you go to the dr. I have been the same as you had slight pains throught but put it down to pregnancy.

I am the same hope it will be ok til bubs born, but my mother in-law has me parinoid about.

Hope you have good luck too.

Everyone has me paranoid with horror stories or the "I dont know if you will be able to wait to have it removed what if it causes problems" statement..... I wouldnt say your cyst is small because mine is slightly smaller than yours (around 6.5cm round) and is still considered largish according to the ultrasound tech-considering they only grow to about 15cm yours is half way there.

I am seeing the hospital dr on thursday and will talk to him/her then about what to expect regarding the cyst and if i find out anything new i will let you know.

I say make an appointment with the OBGYN at your hospital asap to discuss options because they are professionals in knowing what to do with our neather regions................you have a right to be informed!!!!
