Hi my son was diagnosed with G6PD or Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency when his heel was pricked as a newborn. It's an enzyme deficiency that may provoke the destruction of red blood cells if he eats fava beans, certain legumes and takes in various drugs. My doctors say my son could lead a perfectly normal life as long as he stays away from food and drugs that may cause hemolytic anemia in boys without this enzyme. Apparently, only males are affected by this condition while females are carriers.
Imagine my guilt when I found out that I caused this. However, I've learned to accept that it's no one's fault and it's a genetic thing. Anyway, just wondering if anyone here is in the same situation as I am or if they know anyone with this condition. Would just like to chat and find out more about this condition.
By the way, my son is 10 months old now and is strong, intelligent and very active.
