The reason I ask this, as I saw something today that made me wonder if we were in 2009?

I was stopped at a set of traffic lights, and glanced over my shoulder at the car next to me, and I saw a sight that I didn't believe. I literally rubbed my eyes like a cartoon character, as I saw a mother breastfeeding her baby (not that shocking I know), but she was doing it whilst sitting unrestrained herself on the front seat of the car!!!!:banghead::banghead::banghead:

Better yet, she then lit up a cigarette!! I kid you not!!!
I shouted without even knowing it, and it was loud enough for her to hear, (through a closed window on my side.....and hers with the kid in the car), look at me, and just smile as she exhaled, and her and her girlfriend (also smoking) drove off. I followed, and got the rego details for the car and phoned the police, but I was dumbstruck! I pulled into a service station, and sat there for a minute or two to take it all in.

Did she not have any idea what could happen in a crash?????? Has she never seen the crash test where the mother is holding her baby, the car crashes, and they fly into the windscreen, not to mention the fact that she was smoking whilst holding the baby!!!!!

I'm sorry to rant, and I know it's late, but has anyone else seen anything like this, in this day and age. I ****es me right off, as you can tell, and I'm sure it ****es others off also. Thanks for letting me vent :)

Wow that is pretty stupid, but I have to admit something here that will probably get me blasted,

when dd was a newborn and we had just left the hospital, it was a sunday so there was no public transport (buses) and we had no money for a taxi, we don't have a car or a carseat.. I was tired, out of it and just drained to the core and wanted out of there, my dad came and picked us up and I sat in the front seat cradling dd very close, I only did this as my dad is a very good driver and I trust him 100%. I had no other way to get home. I also didn't know any better.

Have never done it since though. But smoking while holding the baby? Now thats stupid. Would never do that especially a newborn.

That's really Sad Amethyst.. Glad you know better now.. (and glad you all made it home safe!)

Our Hospi personally inspects each "New Parent" car and checks Baby seat is AS and correctly fitted. If you have no safe way to transport bub's home, they organise it. :goodvibes: Wish they all would! Go Latrobe Regional!

Our plan was to take dd in the pram and catch a bus home. But weren't planning on it being a sunday. Our hospital never inspected anything, it was pretty much just sign some forms and shove you out the door cause they were so busy.

You did what you had to Amethyst, so I doubt that anyone would blast you. What I saw was different, and something that the mother looked totally relaxed with, where as I'm sure you would have been a wreck until you and your dd got home safely.

I hope that the police did catch up with them. They seemed interested enough when I contacted them, so fingers crossed that they did. There's a lesson to be learnt, but sadly, as we all know, some people learn the hard way, and in this instance, that would be sad and tragic

:yelclap:Thats great! I agree that all hospitals should.

We took a taxi home as we were staying with my mum in another state and she had no carseat there. The taxi was one that had a capsule in it but the car (and driver) reeked of smoke and booze :thumbsdown:.

I think hospitals should be prepared for the fact that many people wont have capsules/rides home and have somekind of service.

well she was the full new-age hippie devotee mum(which is cool nothing against It) but went on and on about all the terrors i was doing to my poor baby buy having her vaxed then she lit up a ciggy and started smoking:eek: thats while bfing her 4 month in a sling!!!!
when i asked aren't you concerned about the smoke(hint hint) she said nah its only a beady!!!

I recently overtook a car on a major highway. Speed limit is 110km. In the front seat was a mother(I assume) with a 5-6 month old sitting on her lap.
I understand kids can get unsettled whilst travelling but wouldn't you rather stop. Certainly not worth the risk when going 110km an hour in a car. The results of a crash at this speed with an unrestrained bub would be tragic:(

beadys are herbal cigerettes not tabaco
smells like a bushfire when you smoke them

ew yeah I know the ones. Better than her smoking a real cigarette while holding bub I guess.

be like holding a baby over a chimney!

smoking in a car while a child is present and having a baby un restrained

both those things are illegal and absolutley irresponsible

No they aren't, they have no chemicals, drugs or tar in them at all. They are made from different dried herbs and flowers, they are a quit smoking aid. Still not good for you though.

The result of an unrestrained child at any speed would be tragic, but that is just outrageous to have the child unrestrained whilst travelling at 110km/hr.

I've seen what happens when a child isn't restrained, as I was in a car crash about 15 years ago, where I watched as my friend and her baby were slammed into the windscreen. :crying:

Despite constant nagging, she never did restrained her dd, or herself, and we ran into the back of someone at about 60km/hr, and it was heartbreaking. They both died instantly, and it's a sight I'll never forget. I still blame myself sometimes for not doing more :(

Even before this it was my pet peeve, but it just drives me insane as to why you wouldn't restrain a child in a car. I never allow anyone to travel in my car without them buckling up, adults included, no matter how short the trip, and I never travel in a car when there are more people than seatbelts.

It has caused some heated arguments, but after what I've seen, it's worth it.

oh honey i dont know who told you that but they are really bad for your lungs
just as bad as tobacco , they just dont have the nicotine
hell thats like saying marijuana is OK as its not tobacco
its the actual tar filled smoke that causes damage!
thats why if you are in a bush fire you should always wear some kind of breathing mask
not go outside and take deep whiffs
as well as the fact that ppl die from smoke inhalation from backed up chimneys

I used to smoke the herbal ciggarettes, and I'm telling you they don't have tar (or a very very tiny amount), chemicals etc. (the brand I used didn't anyway) only herbs and dried flowers etc. but they are still bad for you as breathing any smoke into your lungs is not good and definetly not good for a baby.

I was freaked out enough taking my tiny newborns home in our car, strapped securely into their capsules,.. but cant imagine ever being in a car with a baby or child unrestrained,..... makes me shiver thinking about it.

Actually....and a bit off topic,..we were out on my parents boat the other day,..a large boat,.. and my 2 big kids both had safety vests on,..but I was holding my 6month old,...and I felt as uncomfortable as if I were driving in the car with him unrestrained... couldnt wait to get back to dry land!:o

Whilst having an unrestrained child in your car is against the law, it is allowed that a child under the age of 12 mths sits on an adults lap in the rear of a taxi or police car and a child over that age can wear a seat belt and also must be seated in the rear of a taxi or police car. I questioned these laws recently when deciding on what transport to use to get home from a party ,I ended up not drinking and driving ourselves. I reported a family awhile back they had a child on the lap of the person on the front seta and 4 kids in the back of a little lancer and were doing around 140kms I reacon when they passed us on a busy country rd, lucky they had country plates so we could tell where they were headed and call the local cops to meet them on their way into town. But if you think its beyond belief that they would do this with their kids in the car then just wait til you hear their explainations for speeding !

:iagree: The idea of driving with a child not in a proper 5-pt harness in a well secured seat scares the living daylights out of me.
I couldn't do it.

I don't think it matters how non-judgemental one person is of a mother, driving with unrestrained children is NEVER ok, NEVER acceptable and should NEVER stop being viewed as such.

 i dont think you need to be the 'perfect mother' before you can think that smoking while holding an infant in the front seat of a MOVING car is DISGUSTING and nothing less than life-threatening!

i give my DD junk food sometimes, so i guess im not a perfect parent... but never in a MILLION years would i drive( or be driven) without a FULL 5 point harness and secure carseat!! i check the tightness of the seat belt EVERYTIME before i put her in the car!

Not to mention that its illegal, so even the law agrees that this is a stupid decision.

I think this case is very very different to judging someone for bottle feeding, losing their temper, giving their kids a lolly, etc....this kind of thing is serious and there is no excuse for it....This kind of thing needs people to notice!
