View Full Version : Toddler shoes-need advice
Ladies, I really need some sincere advice. DD is 13 months. She walks confidently now. But she won't wear any shoes or sandals. She absolutely hates it. She screams and cries when I put shoes on her.
When we go out, she really wants to walk. But I can't let her walk because she has no shoes on.
Did anyone's toddler do this? How do I deal with this? Please advise. Thanks.

I am lucky DD is a shoe fanatic (Imelda here we come) but there are some days she just refuses and as we live in Darwin no shoes is not an option (hot roads = burnt feet) but in shopping centres my compromise would be socks (the ones with no slip spots - or pop some fabric paint spots and squiggles on the bottom) at 13 months I would not be to stressed about the shoes just yet perhaps just keep trying and make sure she sees that everyone else wears shoes when they go out make a point of showing her other little girls with pretty shoes and mummy's shoes etc I am sure she will get there eventually but in the mean time at least socks will help keep her feet cleaner and away from a few of the potential nasties.
Good luck.

yep my little boy hated shoes to start with! What i did was just get them dunlop volley PRE walkers - tehy are really soft but have grip on the bottom. And made him wear them everywhere - he didnt mind them all that much. Wasnt fussed but didnt hate them like 'real' shoes. And eventually just kept putting other shoes on him once he got use to the prewalkers.
Goodluck!

My 12 month old hates shoes as well! She has worn them twice before and that was because she was only 6 months old.
She has refused to wear them since and I was at my wits end but now just leave her with shoes off.
She walks on everything in barefeet.
She loves everyone elses shoes except her own. Lol.
I'll definitely be watching this thread in hope someone has some ideas. Haha:laughing:
Yep.... my DD still to this day at 2 yrs old screams bloody murder at even the suggestion of wearing real shoes.... in fact up until this winter, after growing out of that baby stage I couldn't even get socks on the girl....
The ONLY thing she will even contemplate wearing are crocs style shoes..... I find the ones from Cotton On (hippo's) or Target (shockers) are the best value.... and yep now she has a large collection of them in various shades and patterns.....

my dd loves shoes, so i probably shouldn't post here lol
But i did struggle at first to get her to wear them, because i really only make her wear them when she goes outside or when we go out.
My dd is 13 months so she has some concept of "self help skills"..so i showed her how to put her shoes on, talked about it the whole time and why we have to wear shoes and so on...not sure if she understood what i was saying, but it distracted her enough to be able to put her shoes on.
I sit her on the change table give her one shoe, while i put on the other one, the she has a go at putting the other shoe on (failing of course, but trying!)..then i let her "help" me put on my shoes.
My friend used to let her dd put a spare pair of shoes on her teddy so they could both wear shoes outside. Worked with hats as well and toilet training.
In childcare the children all had a special spot for their shoes, so i did this at home as well..so dd knows where to get her shoes from when we go out.
If your really that desperate trying reading stories about "shoes"..there is a great book called grandpa's shoes (i think..its a mem fox story) or just reading a book and pointing to people who are wearing shoes..and talk about why we need to wear them. really depends on the age of the child though.
sorry i babbled so much..im a mum and a childcare worker..full of ideas..lol hope some of it helped :) good luck

Hi flyffybunny. DD finally wears her shoes without any fuss. She even puts her feet out for me to put the shoes on. I bought Skeanie brand shoes online. They are really soft and cute. They have 50% off now. It's definitely worth a try. www.skeanie.com (http://www.skeanie.com)
My 19 month old will only wear cheeky little soles shoes.

Hi all I just got my DD (mini Imelda) a pair of Ciao shoes and she will not take them off. I put her down for a sleep earlier and took them off and just got her up and low and behold they were back on her feet.
They are made of wetsuit material with a rubbery sole, we got them on Fri and she wore them all day Sat (at seaworld) and when I took them off at lunch (to put more suncream on her feet) and at the end of the day there were no red marks or rubs or any signs that they were even the slightest bit uncomfortable!!!!
I am soo in love with these shoes (I want some for me) and they come in heaps of colours and a couple of different designs for both boys and girls.
Sorry about the :ecomcity::ecomcity: but had to share!
However I can't find hide nor hair of them on the net but got them at DFO if it helps anyone! Although her feet now stink as she has been wearing them for 4 days straight!
