Can anyone recommend a good OB at St John of God Subi?

My first son was born by emergency caesar and I'd really like to avoid having another one with this baby - so a doctor who is supportive of VBAC would be great.

I was with Dr Linda Wong at SJOG Subi and would recommend her. Her offices are in Subi so convienient too.

I don't know her attitude to VBAC, you'd have to have that discussion with her. But she was willing to try to physically turn my dd at 37.5 weeks when we discovered she was breach. And she did that even though we knew dd had a huge head that I might not be able to deliver by VB anyways.

If you do end up with a caesar again, Linda uses a single running stitch instead of staples. I can barely see the scar. Even the midwives commented on her stitching.

My specialist and doctor both recommended Dr Louise Farrell. She's also located in Subiaco and is apparently one of the top 5 obstetrician's in WA, plus it's a bonus having a female ob (there aren't many around).

Good luck!

Hi

my obny was Dr Simon Turner. He was excellent. Dr Turner is a bit abrupt but he's an excellent doctor especially as I had problems with pre-eclampsia and had to have an emergency c-section.

I would reccomend Dr Mike Aitken. He is easy to talk to, accomodating and gives you confidence in everything he does. He is located in the Subiaco CLinic which makes everything nice and simple when having tests etc. His staff, from the ladies at the front desk to the midwives are also great.

Dr Turner did my c-sect and he was excellent. he did one continous stich and my scar looks good eventhough its been 7 months. he doens't mind doing either. he said if i want to have a natural next time around as long as we keep a close watch on my blood pressure

Hi.

I have had Dr Louise Farrell deliver both my babies and she was fantastic and if I have a third would go to her again. She knows what she is doing and has a very down to earth apporoach and that is what mattered to me.

Good luck with it all and let us know how you get on :)

Hi there. I have heard some good things about Simon Turner, however, your best bet is to meet with any Dr and ask about their VBAC success rates. Honestly, I think you will struggle to find a private obstetrician who is supportive of VBAC (and if you do make sure you shout their name loud and clear!). Good luck with your search.

This tread is great! I'm madly seeking a new obstetrician (not happy with my current one not naming names though). Love reading the comments because it is helping me to make a more informed decision. Thanks

I'm going back to Linda Wong for the fourth time, so obviously I'm happy with her.

I couldn't disgree more with the above posting. I just recently had my second baby Sep 07 delivered by Dr Brett and again another fantastic experience. I wouldn't say he is 'too laid back' but calm and reasurring and that put me at ease. Although I didn't have a ceasar, I had stitches and two different nurses made comment on how neat Dr Brett's 'sewing' is. I would happily go back for number 3.

Hi all! I am thinking of using Dr Colin Blair as my OB as I've heard plenty of good things about him. But I'm not sure about the fees - can anyone help me out?
I spoke to his office today and the 1st visit is $480 (includes an ultrasound), follow up visits are $95 and then in wk 20 a planning and management fee of $1500. What is a planning and management fee? And are these fees standard for OB's?
Thanks! :sunshine:

Yes those fees are the norm when going to an OB:yes: Sometimes more sometimes less. I was told it was to help out with their insurance costs ( which I know is HUGE for them)
The good news is though that by the time you have had all those appts and pay the big fee you will have probably reached your Medicare Safety Net - I got half of my fee back which was great:thumbsup:

Wow - their insurance bills must be HUGE! Anyway, it will all be worth it in the end.
So this medicare safety net everyone is talking about, do you actually have to apply for it, or does it kick in after you've paid a certain amount?
Do you know of Dr Blair?

Oh yep they are SO huge - I remember one of my docs actually retired from Obstetrics and went to practice as a GP becuase he said half a years wages was just to cover his insurance, its why so many of them get out of the game these days. Which is awful becuase we need Baby Docs!

I dont think I remember applying for the safety net - its something that just kicks in but I guess it wouldnt hurt to ask them?

Ive not heard of Dr Blair myself but if you start a new thread entitled Dr Blair SJOG Subi? or something like that you might get a better response.:)

I've been given a list of OB names from my GP, and on my GP's recommendation I'm thinking of going with Dr Blair.
I don't know too much about him, so if you have any info to share it would help me out heaps!

I had Dr Brett for DS1, happy but not in a rush to go back. Looking back now I think he pushed us into a c-sect unnecessarily.
For DS2 we went to Dr Mincham at Murdoch, he was good and let me go 9 days over in an effort for a VBAC, however ended up with a second c-sect.
A friend had twins a couple of months ago, her OB was Tim Jeffries, and he wanted her to have a natural birth.
There are a few VBAC friendly OB's around but you do have to search for them
Dr Mincham and Dr Blair share rooms at Murdoch, I met him once and was glad I had Dr Mincham. However a friend had Dr Blair for her second and was happy with him.

I was with Dr Linda Wong at SJOG Subi and would recommend her. Her offices are in Subi so convienient too.

I don't know her attitude to VBAC, you'd have to have that discussion with her. .

i went with linda wong for both of my children and she was great. i really loved the fact that she lived right next to the hospital and the office was very close by. she could be there in a poofteenth of a second.

somehow , she read my mind when i completely panicked in the middle of the delivery . i thought i was going to burst in half from my vagina outwards. and i completely started to panick and i thought they should push the baby back in and do a c-section (as you do  ) . but i never actually said this, i just howled " Noooooo Noooooo Nooooooo" very loud. she turned and said to me 'now mysonroger, i can't push the baby back in and do a c-section' and i thought, far out, how did you know i was thinking that. maybe that's what everyone thinks. but she calmed me down.

if i was living in perth, she'd be my obsty now. she's pretty relaxed

I second Linda Wong. She was my ob for both of my girls, she was fantastic.

SJOG has been found to have the highest c/s rate in Australia. It sits somewhere around 70 - 80%. It is categorically the worst place in Australia to try for VBAC.

If you are serious about having A vbac, get an independant midwife, their success rates are about 85%, compared to a dismal 20% success rate in the hospital system.

:iagree:
You may find an OB that appears to be VBAC friendly, but remember that once you've paid that planning and management fee (usually around 20weeks) you are stuck with that OB (or you will loose alot of $$$). Just make sure you are 100% happy with whoever you choose.
Good luck.

Hi,
Did you have a natural birth or c-section with Dr Aitken? I heard he was a little bit gung-ho with the caesars.
Thanks

I had Dr Aitken ..... and while I did have a c/s it was because bubs was breech and it was entirely my choice.

His approach was basically that you should have the posative birth experience you want.....he certainly didnt push me into it - and offered an ECV and lots of advice to try and turn bubs so I could have a vb.

He seemed quite open to the possiblity of a VBAC (though it probably wont be my choice so I guess I wont really know for sure.....)

I would recommend him to anyone ... he is absolutely fantastic!!!!!!

Hi just a quick one on Mike Aitken,

He delivered our son in 2006 on Australia Day. He is a fantastic ObGyn and will listen to everything you have to ask or say about your birth. I definately wouldn't say he is gung-ho on c/s, he would prefer you try a vb. We had to go for an emerg c/s as bub had his heart rate drop and thankfully Mike made the call for a c/s as the cord was wrapped around our ds neck.

We have been going through Mike since 2003 as we have been on the IVF rollercoaster and he has been the most supportive person we have met. His partner Dr John Love is also a very thorough and caring ObGyn.

I too cannot recommend Mike highly enough he is absolutely fantastic!!!!!

Hi all
(I just posted this elsewhere but realised the thread was very old, so am reposting here)

I am seeking a great Perth obstetrician from over- seas. My husband and I are currently trying for a baby and have been told to get onto an obstetrician now.

I am wondering whether anyone has fallen pregnant overseas, and moved at some stage through their pregnancy (for me it will be laste August 08) and can share their experience of finding an Obs whilst overseas.

Or does anyone have any opinions about doing this from overseas???

Thanks

I have recently had a baby (9 weeks old) Mike Aitken was wonderful. The way he included my husband and also my mum in appointments was lovely. I can not recommend him enough. My experience having a vaginal birth was very calm and exciting :-) Mike was very open to talk about all options and supportive to our decisions. 10/10

At the end of the day - you can't really book an OB until you have a positive test as they work out their appointments based on the due date. If you are going to be back in Perth in August then that would work out fine for first appointments - you may have to test early every cycle and as soon as you get a BFP BOOK. In the meantime, do your research, get some names and make contact and see if any are NOT taking on new patients. That might save time

I am booked in with Linda Wong. So far I really like her and find her very warm and friendly as well as extremely knowledgeable.
