View Full Version : Wont play on mat with toys
Just wondering if anyone else has this problem,
My DS is 6 months old but he wont sit on play mat and play with toys on his own or with other kids. e.g yesterday we went out for lunch and after the 2 other bubs would quite happily sit on the ground and play with coasters and toys but every time i put Bailey down he cries???
He is such a good baby at home and laughs, cuddles and generally such a happy little man around me, DH and his grandparents but when others are over he seems really sooky and whingy??
Can anyone suggest why he might be doing this??
Thanks!

this is a stupid question but does he get time with other people besides immediate family regularly? i mean like a playgroup or friends' children or others??
No thats a good question, Not really is the answer. I put him up to the gym childcare for 1 hour when i go in the morning but there isnt heaps of kids there.
Do you think i should put him in a childcare or playgroup??
He spends time with my friends bubs but doesnt seem to want to play with them or the toys?? He will happily play with toys if he is on someones knee or if i get on the ground with him
My daughter just was not interested in toys.
It was only when we had our first son that she started to play
and by then she was 3.
Its funny cos i see my boys
they love toys
but not my girl, she just didn't understand toys....
I just cant figure it out... He is definately a mummys boy, but even if i am just behind him he cries to be picked up.
Kimmy, did your daughter just have no interest in toys at all?? Bailey likes toys if i sit him on my knee to play with them, but he just doesnt want to play with toys and other kids????? Hmmmm...dont know what to do:confused:

You are definately not alone!!! My DS was exactly the same, he hated being put down, no matter how many great toys were in front of him!! It was so fustrated, I would see everyone elses babies at mothers group and they loved playing on the floor - but not my little one! Now he is 14mths and happily runs amok, I couldn't get him to sit with me if my life depended on it! So your little one may grow out of it eventually. It might not be a bad idea to join a local playgroup, they are fantastic and I think thats what helped my DS out alot! Good luck with it!
Thanks Harmony83, glad to know im not alone!:)

maybe you could go to a playgroup with him once a week, and sit with him while he plays, then slowly start distancing yourself. it may take a while, but it might work.
or just give him different toys, like wooden spoons, old phones, old remote controls, or alfoil (mine loves alfoil). even plastic coathangers. maybe he just doesn't like conventional baby toys. it took mine a while before he went for them too.
I dont think its so much an issue with not liking toys but more an issue with sitting and playing on his own or with other babies. We put toys down for him but if i put him down there with other bubs he just cries?
If i sit and play with the toys with him, he is fine. if he is on my knee he will play with the toys so he shows interest in them but wont sit with other kids and play?
I might try the playgroup thing though, thanks for the suggestions!

I guess I'm a tough mum. I make my kiddies play on their own a lot. If I have jobs to do or something they need to learn to keep themselves occupied. Ella ( 5mnths) will sqeak when I first put her down but after a couple of mins she's happy to play! Dont get me wrong, I do play with my kids a lot aswell. I just dont take any nonsese from them!!
Yes, might need more social interaction...
Enjoy yourselves.
Yeah Becca rae, i think i do need to be strong!:devil6:
Hi Leanne:wave:
Well,I dont think Bailey is lacking in social interaction too much,I happen to know hes got the most gorgeous lil friends;)
But I do think you need to get tough. If you are constantly holding him,he will never learn to play alone. Its like the tummytime issue, lots of practice and he'll come round!!
We will just shut Riley and Bailey in a room together and make them play and have fun!!!!!:p
