View Full Version : Kraft
I just heard on the news this morning that Kraft are sacking some of their staff here in Melbourne and moving the jobs overseas to China/Asia?! I think this is so awful - I might start reducing the amount of Kraft products I buy. Hmm. I wonder if I can convince DH we don't need vegemite.

Yeah Julie, that would be like convincing dh we no longer need peanut butter.
Sad about the jobs though. Seems everything these days is getting exported out. You can't even call some customer services centres anymore and speak to a local, it is all done over in India and the like.

I think Kraft is owned by the Americans, so I guess the profits aren't going in to the hands of Australians anyway. Such a shame.

There is another yeast-extract spread like vegemite called Marmite, I don't know what its like, haven't actually tasted it, and I don't know whether its australian owned or made - but it might be worth looking into if you're serious about boycotting!

It's definitely owned by America (weird isn't it that an Australian icon like Vegemite comes from an American owned Co) but at least these jobs were in Australia. Apparently over the next few years a lot of factory jobs here in Australia will disappear and move over to China where they work for 75c an hour. What does that mean for our economy??

Marmite is a British concoction - very similar to vegemite but does taste differently. Don't know if you can get it over here. Similar jars etc, similar branding. But it is really strong in taste and sends your taste buds into a frenzy when you have it.
You either like it or loathe it. I like it when it is just a scraping on buttered bread or toast - anything more and I just can't eat it.

Sanitarium make the Marmite that you can get over here. I think it's made in NZ.

Yep. My English dh tells me it's not as good as the real thing from uk land.

Apparently its a different recipe and completely different packaging.
Why they bother interfering I don't know.
If you have any British food shops near you (as I know they have in Sydney and Melbourne) then you may well be lucky enough to get the good old British version.

The UK version is produced by Best Foods, a subsidiary of Unilever. So look out for that if you see any around. If its Sanitariums then its just not the same.

I like the NZ version, it's just what you're used to I guess. Maybe Bovril is closer to the UK version. That's really strong and tangy.

Bovril bought out Marmite initially then they turned into Best Foods etc.
Bovril is like Marmite but not quite as tangy. Many Brits drink Bovril mixed with warm water. Its quite nice and tastes a bit like Beef Oxo. But, you just can't drink Marmite mixed with hot water.
Marmite mixed with butter then spread on toast or bread is scrumptious and makes it taste more bearable for those who usually think its stripping the skin off the top of their palates.
