Hi,

Okay, so now that summer is coming up and my breastmilk is completely gone, I was wondering how much in the way of fluids a bub needs?

At the moment DD has a water bottle on hand 24/7 and has maybe 3 cups of water and 2 cups of milk a day.

Is that enough?

MY DS1 is 3yrs old & has water on hand all the time he still has 600mls of milk a day....just loves his milk,DS2 is 6months & I try to give him a few sips of water as its getting hotter, the child health nurse did tell me actually how much water toddlers require I cant remember now maybe its worth ringing & asking,we need over 8 glasses,so I think if they can drink a couple of cups thats good.
Sorry not much help :D

Not sure of the actual requirements but my 17.5mth DD drinks about 3 of her tommee tippee water bottles full a day...i think they hold something like 250ml's. but she does not drink milk at all...flat out refuses and has done since 11mths.

DD has around 3 tommee tippee water bottles a day as well as 2/3 bottles of milk. I just keep the water bottle around for her to grab if she needs a drink. She also asks for it as well. She also has a cup of water with a dash of OJ for breakfast each morning as well

I think as long as you have water on hand and offer it to them often (or they can access it themselves) they will drink as much as they need. :)

Oliver probably drinks about a litre a day of water/milk/juice.

:iagree:

I have no idea how much DS (20months) drinks each day. He has a straw cup all day, and brings it to me when he has finished it and wants me to fill it up. He is also learning to drink from a normal cup, so ihave the plastic ones in a drawer where he can reach them, and he'll often bring them to me asking for 'more pease?'. He also doesn't drink milk......but if there is a milkshake on offer.....:D

3 cups of water and 2 cups of milk?

I would be doing one seriously happy dance if my toddler drank that much.

He is lucky to drink 150ml water a day and maybe 50ml of milk.

He is very settled and very rarely sick so I try not to worry about it, but he always has his water bottle within reach and I offer it regularly.

I don't think you have anything to worry about.

My DS is a water lover.... lately it's been over a litre of water a day. We just leave his sippy cup around for him to drink freely. He also has 2 cups of milk a day;) I def think they drink whatever they want/require.

I have no idea exactly how much water EJ would drink - she always has a water bottle on hand but since she prefers cold water from the fridge as soon as it gets warmer she brings it back over for more cold water - she also drinks quite a bit during meals. Since its been warmer weather she's also wanted a water bottle while in the car and even near the bed.

While there is no documented amount of how much water a toddler should drink per day (the recommendation is to quench their thirst and then some )

Anyway, I do know that toddlers have an increased risk of dehydration because of their big heads and tummies (greater surface area) they also as produce a great deal of lactic acid because they are so active.

With my girl, who isn't really a toddler by age definaition, but certainly by her behaviour  I offer her a drink from her cup about every ten to twenty minutes, as well as leaving her cup available to her where she is playing.

I invested in a Foogo straw cup :) DD loves it! Maybe you could give it a go with your bub? It's insulated so keeps the water nice and cold too! I find that sometimes she just drinks out of it cos it's a novelty.
