Boys Name - Jethro?

Finding it really hard to settle on a boy's name that both DH and I love/ agree on (girls names were easy!).

Our last name starts with M and has 4 syllables, with lots of 'a' and 'e' sounds, so we need a first name with no more than 2 syllables, and preferably with some 'o' or 'u' sounds to round it out. Middle name will be either Stephen (after my Dad) or Thomas (Granddad).

My favourite at the moment is Jethro (Jet for short) although people tell me that it reminds them of the Beverly Hillbillies :eek: ! (never watched it myself so I was none the wiser). But I like it because it's a bit different...?

My second choice would be Noah and 3rd would be Jesse.

Dh on the other hand is suddenly set on Leo. Which I don't mind (it's my starsign)... but I don't LOVE it - it just doesn't grab me.

What do you think???

Me personally I think Jethro is a bit too Beverly Hillbillies for me too! But if you like it then choose it!

Must admit, first thing I thought of were the 'Hillbillies' too :o So it probably wouldn't be my first choice...

I really like groovy names like Jethro, Levi etc., unusual but with a history (rather than modern made up names with weird and confusing spelling) Beverly Hillbillies was so long ago, and Jethro Tull was a sixties/seventies muso....and anyway it's cool in a retro kinda way! Go for it:thumbsup:

i LOVE the name Jethro!! I wanted to put it on our list, but our last name starts with a J sound so it just didn't go very well together. The first thing I think of is Jethro Tull. And once the name is attached to your gorgeous little bundle of joy, HE is what people will think of when they hear the name.

I personally don't like the name Jethro.. just think of him being made fun of in school. If you were to use it.. Jet is really cute. You don't have to take my opinion but I think Owen is a cute name for a boy.

Thanks all - it's good to hear your opinions! I actually like Jethro Tull (my dad used to play their albums when I was little) and I wanted a name with a bit of history, and a good meaning (Jethro means 'excellence' or 'preeminence'), but not too common.

I'm not too worried what older people think, but teasing in the playground is what I'm trying to avoid...then again I wonder how many kids his age would have heard of the Beverley Hillbillies anyway? I've never seen the show myself and I'm 33, :laughing: And I do like being able to shorten it to Jet.

I don't really like the name Jethro however, I love the name Jett as my son is called it. His middle name is Thomas as well. I also like Noah which I am considering at the moment for my baby which is due in 3 weeks. We are soooo stuck for a boys name.....:kiss:

Jett is cute, if that's what he's going to be called then maybe just Jett.

Jethro? um...well not one of my favourite names. Alot of people obviously associate it with Jethro on Beverly Hillbillies and the reason they chose that name for that character is that its a bit of a known redneck name. But its your baby so you get to choose.

Love all the other names too, including Leo.

exactly... what kids his age by the time he's older would have heard of that show considering how old it is now.

we named our son Richard after my DP (we call our son RJ as a nickname) and people were calling DP big d*ck and our son little d*ck as a joke. but thats the thing, it was only older people saying it. no one my age would think of that and by the time he goes to school they wouldnt know d*ck is short for richard anyways.

and by the time he is older, if anyone thinks of jethro tull when they hear is his name they might say how cool of a name it is.

the name is starting to grow on me though. i personally wouldnt name my child that but i think its a great name. :D :thumbsup:

I LOVE the name Jet:) Jethro didnt grab me so much because admittedly I thought of the Hillbillies too - however no one will associate him with that once he is born. He will take on his own association with the name:) and the school yard kids wouldnt know the Hillibillies were now let alone by the time Jethro is in school.

I had the same prob with wanting to call my baby Scarlett - thinking she might get Scarlett the Harlot in school - but really - who uses the term Harlot anymore? certainly not kids - its a name before their time just like the Hillibilies

Whatever name you pick will grow on him even if people dont like it at first - within the first couple of weeks no one will be able to think of him as anything different:)
