So , yeh, my Q is as above.. my son is 13 months old and a slim one at that at only 9.3kg (if that).. are there any carriers out there for toddlers that age and size? Have any of you done so? Does it just KILL your back?
Im asking as DS has never been in a carrier or sling but i've always wanted to use one and was wondering if he still could now he's bigger

ergo!!;):thumbsup::thumbsup:
the toddler patapum is good for older bubs. I found it better than the ergo (very simular structure wise but has a tad higher back) and its more comfier than the ergo

Ergo's good but bulky. Scootababy good and easy to use but only hip carry. I just got a carrier that, if I understand correctly, is like a mei tai and it's been great so far.
There's a google group for babywearers who would be able to answer your question much better than I can!

Talking of Mei Tai's.. i just saw them (Mei Tai Hip Carrier) on the net and looked excellent (the ones with the clip).. anyone used or got one? what do you think of them? I'm still not sure if wearing a 9kg baby on my hip would absolutely kill my shoulder and back tho?? Especially since i've never "worn" DS b4...

I use a bubba me with my nearly 19 month old. He is a bit heavier at about 11kgs. It is a hip carry at this age and I find it easy as they can support their weight a little more than a little bubba.
I didn't start using it till he was about 12 months.

DD1 weighs about 14kg and I've had no problems with the ones I mentioned :)

ergo:yes:
my 6month old is just over 9kg and I can wear him for hours!
I still use my ring sling for my 4 year old at times, just a basic hip carry.

Ok, im confused: are Moe Tie's and Mei Tai different brands?? Im guessing so.. anyone know which is the original? The baby moe tie looks quite good it comes with the rings instead of clips..
Sorry to be a pain, but any and all advise would be good. Im after one that can be worn on hip or on back and since they arent the cheapest things the more advice i get from regular baby wearers the better!:):flowerz:

check out flippityskip dot com dot au
they have a variety of sling options there,.. I personally think the Ergo is the best for a toddler,..as you can wear them comfortably on your back aswell as front and side,..

Yep go the ergo.. :yelclap:
ergo ergo
i have dodgy neck, arms, shoulders but have no problems carrying my toddler (11kg)
Ergo
I carry my 16 month old (13.6kgs) in this in both the front carry and the back carry.
And I've carried my almost 4 (19kgs) (4 in Feb) toddlers in it in the back carry :)
Easy.

:iagree: the ERGO is by far the comfiest carrier I've ever worn (and I tried quite a few before I 'discovered' it!).
You really can't go wrong with one, it will easily carry your bigger toddler and has the hip and back carry positions you were after (as well as front, but my very lanky DS soon grew out of that :o).
Good luck!!

Oooh and I just realised they're on special at the moment :) ! Babes In Arms usually has a pretty good deal on them, that's where I got mine (15% off!) if you're thinking of getting one. We love ours!:smiliedance:

Anyone know where in Australia (im in Caboolture QLD) i could buy a "scootababy hip carrier"? They are a USA brand..
Thanks everyone for the opinions.. the ergo does look good, but im liking the look of the Mei Hip or similar.. plus as DS hasnt ever been in a carrier i figure he may do better in a hip one rather than on my back... ? I dont really even know if he's gunna wanna be in one.. he's always wanting to get down and crawl, but then he has his clingy moments too.. :ecomcity::confused:

Hi there
Just to throw another one out there - I use a Baby K'Tan carrier. By far the best one I've ever come across. Way less bulky than the Ergo and can have bub/toddler in heaps of different positions - front, back, hip, cradle ect. My bub lives in hers. I can carry her for hours without getting a sore back.

the ergo is not only for back carry, you can also do front or on the hip;)
I used the Ergo when Av was a toddler (not used to a sling either - we ditched the pram after we got the Ergo!)
Now using it with my 3mth old (since he was a few weeks).
I like the look of mei tais but yet to try one = Ergo is like a westernised version really.

Thanks so much :hugs: everyone for all the advice on carriers/slings. My son has definately made it obvious he does not wanna be in a carrier (we tried a few on at the shops) after all these months of not being in one.. but all this info you have all provided will be stored away incase i ever TTC #2 :)
(#2 would be in a sling from day 1)

UPDATE: I decided to go ahead and buy an ERGO after all and thought to my self "oh well if he absolutely hates it after being in it quite a few times then ill sell it" (they sell very well on ebay i found out)
And im glad to report that he's been in it 3 times now for about 30 mins each time and seemed to really like it.. as long as i keep moving.. if i stop he starts to crack and wants to get down :( Wishing i'd bought one ages ago!
So, yeh, thanks everyone for all your reccomendations, now a friend of mine even wants to buy an ergo after trying her baby in mine. .. she prefers it over her baby bjorn! :flowerz:
